First round of zaps in the new tent 😎



Talpa & Holy Grail. Both spawned 8/17 to CV+. These have been sharing space with a few pan cyan trays, semperviva, and mexicana. All fruited well. Finding a nice sweet spot without having to keep things too wet.

Whats was the timeframe from spawn to pin and from pin to harvest..?
What substrate and casing dud you use..?
How about the conditions..?

I don't know where I am messing up with this species. I thought I did a better job this time around but the pins are already aborting and I assume the rest will do the same like my last attempt. Almost wonder if I just have a shit ass culture. I got it from vendor as LC and I don't even know if it was ever fruited .

I did LC>grains>75:25 cvg:fine wood chips > cased with 50:50 peat verm ph 8ish> generous misting and consistent 95% humidity the whole time

Idk I want to start over from spore, I feel like I'm wasting my time with this culture. I have one more block I've been letting colonize for a LOONNNGGG time that I might try a dunk and casing.

Curious what your temps are? From what I understand they fruit best somewhere between like 65 and 70. Though my attempt with multi spore has been fruiting fine around 73.
Also, seeing as how this abort you have pictures is from the edge of the sub, how’s the water build up along the edge?
I’ve seen water build up to the point I have to dump it out now and then. Definitely drowned out some fruits

Right around 65F maybe a little lower now that it's getting cold out again. In my dank ass basement. I will check for water around the sub later tonight

I don’t know how I feel about all this water pooling.

Anyone with more experience have any opinions?
I’ve seen some wet ass sub pics with crazy pin sets floating around this thread tho.

My humidity control was set at 90%rh with a differential of 4.6.
Been hot here the last few days. Like 78/80.

Turned the fan up and lowered the humidity settings/differential to give it a chance to evaporate off.

Speaking unexperiencially all around, unless it was gandalfiana, I would bail some of that water out off the top of that sub with a syringe.

I'd be tempted to just soak that up with paper towels.

Don't rely on humidity meters. They measure that air and not the surface. It's really best to get a visual feel for things.

Zaps enjoy water and can tolerate some pooling on the surface, but saturation/surface pooling is not mandatory.  The quickest method to deal with the excess water you have there is to carefully hold the tub sideways and drain it off the corner.  You can leave the tub propped on its side for awhile, and also use the corner of a sponge to wick more water out of the casing after it’s done draining.

Drained it this morning before work.
Tbh I also did the tip and drain a while ago on the other shoe box I have had going for a while but that was cased with verm so you couldn’t really see the surface conditions-as well as running mostly in a JCM so by the time it was saturated the sub had shrunk a bit and you could see the water level from the side.

Gotta say I’m a not a fan of using verm. Sifted cactus soil moving forward. It stays in place with the tip and drain plus I can actually see the primordia starting to form. 
Like you said Thirdeye, visual feel of the surface conditions is where it’s at.

Yeah I'll give a +1 to humidity sensors being junk. I have yet to find one that doesn't read false 100% or way under the actual reading. I think the problem is with applying them to mushroom cultivation is that they saturate after dew point and it either causes false high readings or damages the sensor from having condensation on the physical probe.

When I was doing pans in a JCM I had FAE and humidity monitored by an arduino with a solid state relay to switch everything on and off. This is better than the commercially available cycle timers because it's infinitely adjustable at millisecond precision and cheaper when you buy the knock off amazon version of the boards needed. I want to do a write up on it after I dial it in better for a Martha tent.

I’d definitely be curious to read your write up.

I gotta say though whether or not they are 100% accurate, at least from my experience they are accurate enough.
Whether it’s in a JCM with some cheap stick on battery powered guages or in a proper dreamer tub and a low end $20 Elitech humidity/temp monitor from the β€˜zon  I’ve gotten Zapotec to fruit. Well, at least the one that is currently running start to finish in the dreamer is starting to pin, so I don’t see any reason for it to fail.
As far as the sensor failing I’ve been running it about a month and I haven’t seen any obvious issues. Seems to work fine to me.
That’s one thing I’ve really noticed and love about this hobby, you can get as down and dirty on the cheap as you want or drop loads of cash on high end shit, either way if you pay attention and adapt to what you have you can grow mushrooms. It’s really great.

It's maybe shit (kind hard to tell from pics. Just wait a little bit to be sure.) but you also don't need to quarantine a contaminated grow ever. So don't stress about it. Just dump it, when you're sure, whenever you have free time. Doesn't matter if it's today or a month from now.

I have another sub right next to it so tbh that’s mostly why I was freaking haha. Didn’t really wanna lose that already.
But once I read some I realized that I honestly  don’t care either way. Still got 2 jars of consolidated spawn , some fresh prints, a clone on agar and enough fruit to last a bit.
I just wanna see what happens at this point. Maybe I’ll break out the canon and see what I can get.

Does this look like mold on the casing layer of my zapo shoeboxes?
I don't mean the myc colonizing the casing layer but these fine fuzzy hairs on the parts which haven't been colonized yet.
Smells a little bit moldy i think. :frown:
