It aint that serious tho imo.  Maintaining good surface conditions gets much harder as your sub shrinks. It seems the sub just soaks up the moisture. I always just give it a heavy handed mist post first flush because theres no sensitive fresh myc to become matted

Second flushes arent worth the time it takes to mist em to me anyway. Id rather spend that time making more spawn

I do it all the time. Especially if I'm sloppy with harvesting and it looks like a war crime on the original top side.

Sometimes "the loaf" breaks while flipping but doesn't matter.

I put a quarter inch of fine verm on the new top like I did for the old top as pseudo casing. I just flip it and pour a some water on it, then put the casing on and mist the casing.

heavy misting means big beads of water. spray more and get pooling which is never beneficial for the mycelium surface.
heavily misting a casing f. ex. is another story.

Until your hand hurts from pulling the trigger on the mist bottle. haha

I'd guess 10 to 20 sprays, depending on how dry the loaf is. Maybe more if you're starting a second flush. to start a second flush on a shoebox, I pour about a cup of water on the top of the cake. Some people use less but remember, mushrooms are over 90 percent water.

Thanks! So I have questions on the pseudo casing. I think this is something I’m not doing or my process might be wrong. Usually when I make a tub, I mix fully colonized grain with coir, after I mix it, level & compress it, I then take a bit more coir to cover it all with like a 1/4 inch of coir. Should what I’m doing be a bit different? Like mix the grain & coir, level & compress, then let that colonize, and after it colonizes and before pinning case it then?  I ask because I think someone on here told me that is a good way to go about cultivating APEs & Pans (along with some hpoo for the Pans). Or is this something that will work with all different varieties?

You got it right.

Top layer of coir at time of spawn for cubes just as you described.
Use thicker layer for PE varieties.  :thumbup:
Casing is usually more than plain coir and occurs later in the process for non-cubes.  :thumbup:

after the first flush it doesnt really matter anymore but during the first flush u dont want ur surface to pool

'heavy misting' is basically instead of dunking and soaking.

Ten years ago folks would rehydrate their subs for an hour after the first or second flush.

So, imo, heavy misting, in this context, is until you're tired of spraying.  If there's to much water a few hours later, you can dump it out.

If you're setup requires misting prior to or during a flush, understanding how to maintain surface conditions is definitely a better approach then telling someone how much to mist.  Because in that context, it is all about the surface conditions.

Ime a nice soak after first flush doesnt replace misting. Cant get nearly as good a second flush when i neglect it

Hello,
i am trying pf tek for the first time and having a bit of a problem. I used 2 Verm : 1 Water : 1 BRF and it looked exactly like in all the videos. But after 90 minutes of pressure cooking the entire substrate shrank and kinda left smears on the glass like this:


I dont know what i did wrong. Should i start over or use this?

I prematurely… hydrated my coir. It’s been in a sealed 5 gallon bucket since I added boiling water to it. Is there any need to do anything to sterilize it prior to using it to spawn?
