That yellow color doesn’t alarm you? This is a pretty old tub but it had a bunch of potential pins so I kept it around just in case.

Looks like you had stagnant water sitting in the bottom until it eventually evaporated. Are those new pins?  If it’s been stalled out for a bit then it’s probably trash.

You can get crystal clear photo worthy plates without filtering.





Although if you were gonna go the filter route, I wouldn’t use a coffee filter with liquid agar. You probably would be better off with an automotive paint filter.


sorry mate but that is not cristal clear by any means

i had good success by lowering agar and lme to 60% of the recommended 10/10 by 500 ml and had ver good clear plates, solid enough (just)


Ok, ya got me! 🤣 Maybe not “crystal” clear like glass but no sediment, chunks or spots. Clear enough to look pretty in pics and to see abnormalities in growth.

Flocube is the best

Cheap you can go Amazon and AliExpress and all that stuff (motor might go out early, might arrive smashed up a bit, etc )

Cheapest and possibly best, build your own if you have the time and want to learn

It's funky and probably a combination of enzymes and bacteria.  Plus, standing water isn't good for most fungi we work with.

If the tub is basically stalled I would compost it.  But no it doesn't alarm me.  Bacteria in jars is definitely not good, but once it's spawned, you are just going to have some bacteria living with your fungus.  And not all of them are necessarily even detrimental.

But standing water favors the ones that are less good.  And stresses The colony.

if by quarantine you mean outside, yes.  if you dont handle bugs immediately it will end with you having to rip everything down and stop growing long enough to completely break their life/reproductive cycle.

Go for it, I do it all the time.  I have WBS going right now.  If you haven’t done LM grain before, the grain will not look colonized like you would expect, it’s very thin and whispy, went you see little fruiting bodies, it’s time to go to HWFP substrate

Speculation here cause I haven't tried so it'll be cool to hear from someone more knowledgeable.

I'd think it wouldn't make much difference at all since the mycelium network is pulling nutrition and water from the whole tub already to get you fruits on the first side. Unless I'm mistaken and it's able to use the grain closer to the fruiting surface more efficiently than the farther ones.

The reason I ask is because I’m starting to get a lot of fruit on the bottoms after a 2-3 flushes on the top, and after hittting it with Beef’s punisher tek. Last night I got 201g from the bottom of a cake and 276g from the top and sides after hitting all 6 sides with the punisher tek 5 days ago!

your micro climate is better at the bottom. its got nothing to do with nutrition or up vs down.

personal tip: once you start tweaking or upgrading cake grows its time to do grains/bulk.
