With the break and shake to test for it coming back, if it just comes back the same does that mean the bacteria is too strong? I’ve done a break and shake after the first one because of this exact reason. I’ve always heard the myc comes back quickly if it’s not contaminated and it did but it ends up the same way.

This is a jar I'm tossing because of a bad shake, it's been like this since Thursday and doesn't seem to be recovering at all:

It was completely white before the shake.

Two bins I make at the same time. One not doing as well. I am assuming just a bad batch. Everything else looking ok? Have been trying to figure out if my moisture levels are ok as well. Sprayed them  dry little yesterday but that’s all I’ve done as far as moisture. Am keeping the lids on but not latched.

Yes, I'm quite positive. You can cook agar for hours without issue. I run mine for 45 mins and is clear af. Most folks here consider anything past 10 mins a waste of time and or dangerously close to caramelization.

Any chance this is PE mycelium or just cobweb or contam? Or bad genetics? Never seen cube myc so thin and fuzzy on grain before.

isn't the standard advice 15-20 mins for autoclaving liquids?  Why do you go longer?  And why would others go shorter?

Click the "why agar" link in my signature. 45 mins corrects multiple potential issues before they arise. I can ensure proper sterilization for any volume of liquid, I ensure all solids are uniformly dissolved which eliminates sediments and increases clarity  without requiring boiling or mixing prior to cycling.

Thanks for the share.  I will boil longer to achieve full dissolution rather than worrying about “overcooking”.  Seems like the path of least resistance also.  Win-win.

@Stipe-n Cap
I want to make my agar as clear as possible for photographing plates. Would a pre-boil followed by a coffee filter prior to the PC be beneficial?
Or not?
Any other tips?

You can get crystal clear photo worthy plates without filtering.

Although if you were gonna go the filter route, I wouldn’t use a coffee filter with liquid agar. You probably would be better off with an automotive paint filter.

sorry mate but that is not cristal clear by any means

i had good success by lowering agar and lme to 60% of the recommended 10/10 by 500 ml and had ver good clear plates, solid enough (just)

Should be fine provided your floor isn't disgusting. If you're paranoid you could pasteurize it in the oven

No project as large and well documented as the tat project exists

Filtering helps with sediment from LME.  I'm sometimes anal about it, pre-PC my LME and water, filter, add agar.  PC again.

But agar itself isn't clear.  Need gellum gum to take it to the next level.  And I haven't messed around with it yet.

Separating the cakes from the verm is the norm

Edit: most have moved to water tubs though for their cakes. Same results with a lower material cost
