absolutely not) there was a lot of water in the other trays, and that's where the first pins appeared

Well this thread has been really active in the past days, so it kind of disappeared in the fog. But less then a week ago I had the exact same worries. Couldn't figure out if it were trich or weird primordia. And my suspected trich turned into pins, so I have good hopes for yours. Fingers crossed.

Edit: for comparison purposes: page 380 (assuming we have the same page parameters)

Thanks! Went back and read the whole thing. Looks like the expectation with these is that things are going to get weird and concerning looking in some way at every phase. This, from Lew, also made me feel better:

Finally got to case all 5 semp tubs.

Two 15qt tubs got verm only.

One 5qt got verm only and the other 5qt got 50/50 verm/cactus soil.

And then there's this last 15qt tub, that also got 50/50 verm/cactus soil, but not mixed.

So here's my first grow of sempreviva. I got a very nice buzz from 0.5g dried, comparable to APE or perhaps stronger.

I started from spores 6 months ago. The first culture never fruited, I suspect that was a mono. In January, 3 months ago I got this pin:

I ran with the same shoeboxes I use for cubes and got quite small fruits. It took me a good 20 minutes to clean these:

I got curious due to the look of these and did some microscopy. They match quite well the notes of Heim & Cailleux (1959, 1966) for semperviva,

I don't quite get why this thread is called subtropicalis/semperviva. These are different species as far as I can tell. Subtropicalis has branched cheilocystidia, while subtropicalis has unbranched.

I found it interesting that subtropicalis originated as a lab grown culture by Heim and Cailleux. They speculated that what they got was a mutation of mexicana, or a cross between mexicana and caerulescens. Guzmán assigned semperviva to hoogshagenii, but by 1998 he also recognized semperviva and subtropicalis as distinct species.

I have to correct myself here, I see that Guzman as late as 2005 had semperviva = hoogshagenii var. convexa. He says the only difference with var. hoogshagenii is that var. convexa lacks the acute papilla. I find it strange that he doesn't mention a difference in stipe: semperviva is described as having a tough fibrous stipe, hoogshagenii has a fragile stipe. The ones I grew are very tough and chewy.

Anyway, Index Fungorum lists semperviva and subtropicalis as distinct species. I've read that Alan Rockefeller did some sequencing work to settle this, but I can't find anything online.

I believe the consensus is hoogshagenii is a species, and semperviva / hvc / subtropicalis is a species, correctly named subtropicalis. Hoogshagenii is in section mexicanae, whereas subtropicalis is in section Zapotecorum.
Must say that I have corrected the name several times in my books and kinda lost track of the lineage. But I know for sure that true hoogshagenii is considered a very difficult mudhroom to cultivate, which stands in sharp contrast with what we're growing.

Muda’s work well. Wide mouth pints are just about the perfect size.

This is awesome, is this just a standard Muda recepie?

If I remember correctly those were the mix I was using for pan cyans at the time. Coir, straw, aged hpoo, and some verm. They seemed to like it.

Do you guys apply a new top layer after harvest? I used pure verm, and it's all gone after the first flush.

Alas, it has gone green.

Second tray looks like it is doing nothing, but that’s better than turning green. So I’ll wait. My semp plin is on a BRF puck and is doing as it should, so not all is lost either way.

5 tubs.
1:2 Ratio just felt right. With an extra quart pseudo layer. Will probably case near full colonization. Spawn looked and felt/smelled pristine.

I did something different here. 1:4 on the water to begin with to slowly bring everything just below field capacity.

All dry loose coir spread and then used a spray bottle to moisten the top layer.

And @Astra:
They DO SMELL like king crab in the jar. Crazy.
