Im thinking about trying muda bottles with wbs and coir for semps. Any thoughts or experiences with that?

Works well, but the smaller bottles are more efficient. I used the half pint and pint ziploc twist tops. Taller quarts use up a lot more sub in depth for very little gain in the amount mushrooms.

There's no reason it won't work if you prep it well and give it a proper fruiting environment.

I'm still green when it comes to mudas, but I've learned to not make the substrate or grain too wet.

Other than that use the same senses you use for other grows. Monitor surface conditions and learn to read your fruiting environment.

I find that Mudas are similar to fahtlocks in that you can give a plate a chance that you might not trust sending to grain.

I'm a big fan of the Muda.

Good to know, thanks brotha. I'll score some smaller containers and give it a shot! I kinda like the idea of allowing a bottle to colonize and then popping the sub out to  to fruit on all sides like a cake. Idk if it'll dry out too much that way though...I might try it with one and see what happens. 🤷‍♂️

to illustrate ReverendMyc's words:

If you can find something similar to these 750ml PP5 food containers I love to use for germination

they are more space efficient and inline with the sub depth/surface area for semps

edit: too baked lol took too long to reply

Muda’s work well. Wide mouth pints are just about the perfect size.

I've got some more quart jars of semp mycelia on millet grain that are fully colonized and trying to escape the jar (mycelium climbing the sides).  Gonna try them in some shoeboxes with 1:3 field capacity coir (not sterilized) and then case with non sterilized vermiculite and see if I can get them to fruit.

Cold shocking my shoebox and food trays that have been sitting around for weeks and not fruiting.  They ate through the casing and I recased (50/50 verm/peatmoss sterilized).  Someone posted up that sterilization might not be good.

Also going to try casing a jar and see what happens.

Everything looks clean, just not getting the proper trigger to fruit.

One of my subs starts looking like crap. I honestly can't say of it's contaminated or forming primordia. Anyone? Dense white mycelium, trich-like, with little white tufts / balls.

Looks like it is beginning to fruit. When mold is present, you’ll often see bruised mycelium before anything else. But I do feel you, I’ve been growing these things for years & I still find myself thinking “oh shit, did I lose this one?” every time my tubs get going

Thanks! It's really weird, because this tub was the last I spawned and the other two are just hanging out. Fingers crossed for my first subtrops.

Every single tub of anything I have ever sent I almost immediately think "Dammit, I fucked that one up."  A thought I continue to have up to and including when I am harvesting a canopy.

For every 'OK' tray of fruits, i've had a hundred trays of mold..
Nothing is more disheartening that having a tray contaminating with mushrooms, effectively neutralizing my beautiful green mold from taking over.. sigh :oldman:

I took some myc from a brf pristine puck and put it on agar. It turned blue. Is this normal for semp myc?

For sure it can turn blue. Sometimes a whole jar of grain will blue in a few minutes upon final shake.

Fourth attempt
With the last 3 tubs, everything looks good until I added a casing llayer- one tub stalled completely and did nothing, and the other 2 had a few pins that eventually all aborted.

I’ve been using pasteurized Jiffy Mix for casing but thinking of trying something else this time.
Sub is CV below field capacity and this was planted on 4/6 kept at 74F
Any suggestions/thoughts?

I use cactus soil mix. If you have verm on hand 9999999 swears by a verm top layer and I cannot argue with their results.
