I poured 52 new black & blue plates yesterday. I learned not to put 500ml of liquid agar in your 500ml media bottles and then put them in the PC. Boy did I have a big mess! I probably could have poured well over 60 plates, maybe 70. My media bottles all boiled over inside creating a real mess and a real PITA to clean up. I’m thinking I should stay in the 350-400ml range next time. First time I did around 350ml per bottle and had no issues. Figured I’d do a double batch of 2000ml because I have 4 bottles. That no worky! On a positive note, the plates came out great though!

I like these 1000mL media bottles, I run 500mL per bottle. Don't tighten the lid to tight, non vented, almost blew one up after a run in the PC the cap was bulging, sketchy asf trying to let some pressure out and not get sprayed with agar lava!

There's nothing wrong with thicker agar, and all the ingredients are cheap. Figure out what works best for you and don't sweat it.

Yep! That’s about where it is when I’m done, somewhere around that lid line. So I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing. I had a good work flow going this time. Well that is until I poured about a tablespoon of agar onto a plate I didn’t lift the lid on and ruined like four empty plates below it!

I don't want to spend money on media bottles because I have designated glass ones that work well, but I would like to have a silicone ring or something to hold and avoid getting burnt.

Is there a DIY solution that will survive the PC? I just tend to wrap a ring of foil for now, gonna get a thermometer gun eventually and that should help

Just suck it up and buy the infrared thermometer. Once the jar gets down to 125ish its not burning your gloved hand. If it's too hot to hold, it is to hot to pour imo.
