The mold one was exactly that, yes.



I had the exact same issue. 3 days. Boom. Smelled like bread mold.

Yellow is something I added in before PC.  Well it's actually green. Anyway, it's not an issue though because none of my other 16 plates with the same sauce contaminated.

I was just curious.  I see mold fairly regularly that will stain agar yellow.  Often enough I have sort of made capturing them a hobby.

Gotcha. No I don't think the mold changed the color, but maybe it make them more yellow?

I just got some yellow umbo LC and these plates are worrying me:



It looks bacterial to me, but I've never grown nats before. There's some slight fluffiness if you look close.

For comparison, here's some tamps from the same package:

doesn't look promising.  when you take a pic of a plate try shining a light from the side instead of behind. (if you have the light in front of the plate it makes a glare)

Pic 2 looks like as the fluid was absorbed/dried the bacteria had to slow down and switch to a swarm/slide motile phase or just start piling up. Either way they slowed linear expansion and there appears to be mycelium emerging and outpacing it. Likely from the plate in pic 2 you can get a viable culture if you watch and take it at the right moment.  It might require some more maneuvers after that first transfer but it won't be as crunchy with the time frame to do it. You can take a breath at that point.

First time grower and poster here looking for experienced eyes and opinions.  I used a syringe ordered online to inoculate agar.  My plan is to create LC from the agar plates, use the LC to inoculate grain jars, and then to bulk substrate.  Below are pictures of the agar plates.  I'd love general feedback and information on the plates as well as my approach going forward.

Also, a few specific questions:

1) What causes the difference in plates 1 & 3, where 1 seems to be growing out from the center and 3 pops up all over the place?

2) I assume the yellowish stuff in 5-8 is contamination?  Toss these plates or transfer the healthy mycelium?  It wasn't the agar, as those sat unused for several weeks after making them.  Is it likely an issue with my technique in inoculating or just something in the syringe I received?  [edit] I should also note that I used the same SAB to inoculate as I did to make the agar plates and none of the 14 plates had any contamination after 3 weeks.

3) Which plate(s) should I take to create the LC that then goes to grain?

Sorry for all the noob questions, but thanks in advance for your experience and answers!

Forget LC.  You are not making clean LC at your current skill level.  Focus on making clean transfers on agar, then using that clean agar culture to inoculate your grain.  You're kneecapping yourself by trying to go directly to LC, which is a complicated and completely unnecessary step.

Plates 5,6, and 7 are contaminated, I wouldn't bother.  You can make transfers to new plates from plates 1-4, but I doubt they will be clean yet.  You've got some transfers ahead of you, which is a good thing.  That will give you time to start understanding what a clean culture on a plate looks like, which is an essential skill.


I just want to take this moment here for any newbies reading: STOP FOCUSING ON LC, IT IS NOT A BEGINNER SKILL AND IS NOT NECESSARY TO CULTIVATION.

I'm just starting on agar and have a question. I have couple of monotubs coming but there is some bacterial activity going on. Is it ok to take clones from the good looking ones or will there be problems along the road?

Bacterial contamination happened probably because I did not use agar for the grain spawn.

Got pics? Bacteria doesn't attack tubs all that much mainly fruits but always worth a shot at clones just take a good few to have the best chance

Thanks for the feedback -- I'll skip the LC and focus on getting clean plates.  Any advice you can provide on which plate(s) or where on the plates I should be transferring from?  Is one better than the others?  What am I looking for to know that the culture is "clean" and ready for grain?

These are from couple days ago (can't get better ones right now) and from the worst parts of the tub. Most fruits in other parts looks fine. There might be something else also going on but I dont know. These were thrown together very clumsily. Next round gonna take more time and also do agar.

Considering that I have been growing every now and then last 15 years, it is a miracle that these are my first contamination (or something) issues.

Also I don't know why I haven't done agar ever. Now I'm quite exited to play around with it :cool:

I guess I'm going to try clone some of the good looking ones. Atleast I get some practice with agar.

Those all look good to me. They will chunk out into some cool and gnarly monsters with good density very likely. I find those phenos to be a little slow, often very productive, rarely canopies (which they make up for in the end).
