That's pretty much where I'm at myself, especially with spawn. I just had 2 jars that were definitely solid blocks of bacterial spawn which I just verified so now I'm intimately familiar with that so I hope solved some issues. Like you said, if it's not obviously trash, might as well send it. There's no shortcut to experience, right?

Thank you for the pick me up, you're a standup dude.

I agree. I research and read the hell out of this site. I see all the beautiful rhizo plates that everyone else posts and I haven't seen anything like that yet.

When I first started working with a SAB, it was bacteria and mold city. I moved my work area into a dedicated place so I wasn't moving my SAB every time I had to set up and I stopped seeing mold spores on my plates. I'm also working on being mindful of my movements inside the SAB.

I rarely see bacterial blobs on my plates, and when they do show up I can usually trace it to me being careless and waving my arm over the plate or picking it up and putting my finger inside the rim.

I think I'm dealing with embedded bacteria, and possibly some entwined mold.

My plates show decent sectoring in the early stages, but never quite get that rhizo look. I know tomentose works fine, but considering the problems I'm having, I feel the need to chase rhizo for peace of mind.

I took a 12 year hiatus from this hobby because of life stuff. I just got back into it a year and a half ago and it's been a struggle ever since. I've dealt with sour rot, super bacterial icecream spawn, bad LCs, outdated/wrong information, and a ridiculous amount of tubs that went green before the first flush. I'm slowly working my way through all the problems lol

In the last 6 months or so I've put all my focus into following the HHG and getting agar right. It has helped, I do now end up with something out of each tub, but I'm still not to the point where I'm getting multiple flushes or sequential healthy tubs. I'm determined not to give up and be successful at this hobby.

One thing I can say, this has given me a lot of experience about all the ways things can go wrong. I just need to figure out how to consistently make it go right.

What do you mean by clear?

Nats will get fluffy especially if it's prone to overlay.

Water agar won't likely rhizo but lowering your nutes will and I suggest a little extra agar 2.2-2.5%.

I'm referencing Stipe's post on the Starchy white vs clear insides of grains as a sign of proper hydration.

I'm currently making my plates with 1% lme. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't 2% 500ml/10/10? If I'm understanding you right, I should try a richer mixture?

LewDoja was suggesting increasing the agar amount above 2%. A little more agar makes a stiffer plate which bacteria has a harder time spreading out on. Your 1% malt extract amount should be fine.

I’d try running the culture through a Cabin sequestering and try a different grain than oats.. lots of ppl have had trouble with oats and bacteria.  Big fan of hard red wheat personally.  Maybe just source a small amount so you don’t invest a lot if it isn’t the oats.

I have not tried Cabin Sequestering yet. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've been using oats because they're easy to find, but I have seen some people having problems with them and others swearing by them so I kind of dismissed them as a potential vector. I do know that I stopped getting sour rot after I switched from Rye to Oats.

I did some searching and there is a supply store that sells Hard Red Wheat, Millet, and Rye about 30 mins away from me on the other side of town. I'll give another grain a try on my next payday. I'm basically out of oats anyways so its not a big deal to try something else.

Do you have a preference between Organic vs non organic? It looks like they carry both in store.

So I was stting on the porch and had 4 or 5 beers tonight but couldn't really relax cause I have some personal bull going on atm my thoughts would just circulate around the same shit over and over. So to break out of this I thought lets try a couple of the micro-dose caps I made a couple of month ago and get out of that dark rabbit hole. I rarely take those caps and make them more for other people but this was an untouched batch.

Well, half an hour after had the caps I fixed me something to eat and was sitting there eating and looking at the grain jars on the table when they started to become their own thing, no breathing but they kept growing a little and shifting a bit and while that happened my life became an ASMR experience as my eating noises where just everywhere and the sound of taking a sip of water would be amplified and had a bit of a reverb to it as well like in a cave and I thought I could hear something like a song or talking but there wasn't anything to hear.

As it was a beautiful day today and the sun was about to go down I decided to go for a walk and started to get myself ready. While gathering stuff I had to stop a few times cause I forgot what I was looking for and then I cracked up laughing. Outside was great, birds were happy and chatty, still having these auditory enhancements going on and a couple of yawns too.

So I have to say that this was a total surprise and I can't believe how strong this stuff was. That was just 320mg of cubensis powder I ground up and sealed away 8 years ago, two #1 caps I took. I mean all the stuff I have put away is still packing a punch but this clone seems so strong for a cube. I will have to make a note in the stash records.

I confess I grew a few cubensis clones a few years back which I have dried, powdered and sealed but some of them I never tried.

Just thinking along there for a bit. I was intrigued by the question: would generating heat in the flow lead to convection? And thus to suction introducing unfiltered air? The amount of convection created by a torch isn't the slightest. But there's a huge fan creating airflow...

I am not a person torching their grows. I also don't feel knowledgeable enough to challenge Stipe. The discussion was really interesting, because informed people were making their case in a polite manner. I think I know what Stipe must be experiencing on a daily basis. Some people always want to discuss history with me. Sometimes they have valuable input, often it's just history channel level conspiracy bullcrap. Same thing with customers. "This Elm has Elm's disease, sir. It needs to be cut down and removed immediately or it will infect all Elms in a mile radius. Look, here's three types of proof". "Nah, that Cherry is just a little dry. Trying to fool me into some expensive adventure huh? I'll go get the garden hose".
When the four feet deep rooting Elm is standing among green grass, that obviously hasn't been dehydrated in a long time. I guess Stipe's forum life is filled to the brim with these kinds of experiences. I have much respect for him for not saying 'fuck it, go do what you like, I don't care, here's a box of tissues for next week'.

Traven spoke of torching (fully colonized, I conjecture) agar plates, to destroy every airborne contaminant that might be on the surface.
To do that in a SAB would be... Well... So I thought about the theoretical possibilities. I just don't have the experience with flowhoods to know how much using a torch in the flow would actually disrupt it.

What, are you, like, trying to grow drugs or something?

I have confess that my first time making WBS jars was a mess, way too wet.  All on here highly recommended to throw out and start over, which deep in heart I just couldn’t, or maybe I was too lazy to start over.  I know what I did wrong but since they were already made and had agar tested LC, I guess I wanted to Fuck Around and Find out!! Well, I am pleased to say that they are coming along nice.  I will never do that again !! I don’t know if it helped but I shook the jars more and sooner than normal to try to redistribute the excess moisture.  They really look good to me after 8 days.  Now, I will not beat Beef’s record of 10 day to full colonization ( I think that is his record)

Here are the before and current pics

My confession: I'm bad at making anexic spawn. I managed to make 1 round of jars well, and I really thought I had turned a new leaf. I made up like 20+ jars over a couple weekends and used 5 plates to inoculate them all, all different varieties, all with evenly sectored tomentose growth, and all 20 jars are showing several skipped grains. Bacteria keeps showing its ugly head and kicking my ass.

I vented my PC for 10-15 mins. I over cooked my grains at a low simmer until they were as clear as I could get them, dried them overnight, and was careful with how I transferred the agar.

I just dont know what I'm doing wrong. I've read Stipe's checklist and thought I reduced vectors.

I'm going back to the drawing board with plins and clones from the few fresh fruit I currently have. I'm doing up a batch of water agar, and maybe I can get some rhizo growth that way.

Super bummed out right now.

You're climbing the actual learning curve.

And heading in the right direction: focusing on culture work.

A. I was at least half-kidding. Probably more like 2/3rds.

B. Dab torch to top of plate in a fully misted SAB can't be any sketchier than the circumstances my dab torch are usually employed under.
