Some unsolicited parafilm advice: cut and/or fold it so you have a 1-inch (~2 cm) strip to stretch and wrap. It only needs to cover the gap between lid and dish; a little covering the top or bottom helps it to stay on, but a lot just makes it hard to see much of the plate.

Yeah I think that dark spot is part of the lamp I was holding the plate over.

Thats fair. I’m pretty wasteful generally, I’ll unwrap for pictures going forward.

I wasn't suggesting unwrapping for a picture. Just folding or cutting before applying it so less of it covers the part of the lid you want to see through. (I like the fold since I can then just cut shorter strips from the roll.)

I think after months I finally fixed the "problem" with my cultures. It was my agar mix, apparently the myc just didn't like my brf agar. After switching those same cultures to LME, the results are more what I hoped/expected. I can even "control" rhizo growth by playing with LME concentrations.

Here are 3 clones from the same GT fruit:

1 clone at 2% LME 2% agar:



2 clones at 1% LME 2% agar:



I also did some 0.5% LMEs for pan cultures and as an experiment, transferred some GT T2s to a 0.5% plate (left) and to a 2% plate (right).



Interestingly, the 0.5% nutes looks a lot to what my 2% brf plates used to look. So I'm thinking that maybe the brf just sediments too much or my brf brand was just not good for cubes, because GTs, x7x+s, Riptides and AA+s all looked all wispy and weak like in the photo below.



I know this topic has been explained a lot of times in the past but I'm just too hyped about finally getting "rhizo" growth. Please excuse the shitty photos, my phone and the PP5s don't help but I think the difference in growth is quite noticeable. So as a final word of advice, if some other noob like me is having trouble getting decent/good looking cultures after months of transfers and cloning and brf pucks, maybe try mixing things up a bit, it could help.

Three pics of the same dish. First pic, from 11-3 there's fuzzier myc on the inside. This is a tissue sample from jars that went bac, but still produced fabuously! Two pieces of tissue got on the plate. The 'fuzz' almost appears to be where the two myc have met, but Im unsure.

Im having some weird myc covering over some of my tubs and now worried that I have something else going on. There's no other indications that its anything (no color, weird smell) but being newer to agar wanted to see what others thoughts are.

As you can see, I have a t2 from this slide already.

2% LME, pour is shallow, into HG in hood, left to cool.

Also, not all malt extracts are created equal - there's light-DME which is 100% barley, Wheat DME - 55/45 to 65/35 wheat/barley dependent on manufacturer, as well as Rye DME which iirc was around 20/80 rye/barley, although I haven't seen it in quite a while...

Also, watch out for darker malt extracts like "golden" - they contain a lot more carmelized sugars that make agar darker amber, so if you want light colored or "clearer" plates, stick with either "pilsen light" or "extra light" DME's from either Breiss or Muntons.  My preference is Muntons - they have better conversion in their product and less protein making for a clearer solution, Briess has a habit of being slightly hazy even with "cold crashing" the solution after boiling.

I always have some Muntons extra-light on hand for bottle conditioning my homebrew, so that's what I typically use, although I have been experimenting with Briess Bavarian Wheat - it's surprisingly no worse haze-wise than their regular light dme and the myc seems to like it so far...

Just my 2 cents :shrug:

Why not get off the bottle and keg that brew? I bottled my first batch of homebrew from a kit. It was surprisingly decent. But the bottling put me off. Eventually I got into all grain 10gal batches, corny kegs and keezers, with a tap/faucet in the kitchen.

For all my "young" beers like pale ales, ipa's and wheats I agree and do keg; but old-ales, belgians, and imperial stouts...  Bottle ageing is part of the flavor development process. A 3 year-old kegged belgian quad =/= a 3 year bottle-conditioned and aged quad flavor-wise.
