I have a bunch going on pf cakes right now. I have two quarts of grain colonizing right now though. I intend on doing 1:4 coir ratio with a 1/2" coir psuedo casing. If you go with it, or without it i'd be interested in seeing your results.

They are very stout and dense though.

Hm im in if you're in. I have enough KSSS jars for one 32 quart, 1 12 quart and 2 six quarts. I'll case the 12 inch and one of the six inch ones and leave the other two normal.

(Although at least two of my jars are bacterial right now I think so may have to cut that down by one shoebox)

Has anyone ever tried putting food coloring in the water they use to hydrate coir to make colorful mushrooms? Would it even work or would the myc just digest the coloring?

Probably just digest it ... idk.  It works with cut flowers due to capillary actions of the xylem.

you should try tho.

If it were to work at all I'd imagine it would be better with misting water colored after pin formation and probably right before harvest.

Or straight dye in a syringe directly into the fruit...would trip out your buddies, or fool them with hard core blue "bruising".

Mushrooms don't have a vascular transport mechanism like plants do. I think if it would work then we would have all seen examples of mushrooms looking off color depending on what they grew in.
Couldn't hurt to try it though, be interesting to see what happens.

I know a lot of people put food coloring in agar too. I don't think we have seen the mycelium colored as a result.

How important is the pasteurization process for jiffy mix casing layer tek? I read somewhere that contamination of casing layer is rare. the only reason I'm asking is that I'm not sure if I can constantly keep the temp high enough for 1 hr. What I did was cook it until 160F then took it out of the stove and wrapped it in towel so it keeps warm for longer. Is this okay?

Was it hydrated to f.c. & was it in an ovenbag?

Did you temp check the internal @160°f(MAX)?

Keep an eye on Temps as long as above 140f, if not turn oven back on for a few min to keep it above that.

Do you have a pressure cooker?

r

Is this type of myc growth normal for APE on grain? It seems to be colonizing in balls rather than stringy growth.

The thick ball growth can indicate bacteria. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it doesn't easily break up or breaking it up makes everything stall. Do you have a picture of the agar or a lc test plate?

It seems that it’ll break up easily. I’ve noticed all PE jars are colonizing like this regardless of the variety. Same for Starry Night and Ape jars.

Could it be tmomentose growth?

I think part of what's going on is you have lots of popped grains. I think it's tomentose if it breaks up easy and recovers quickly. You need to focus on prepping the grains better you will get better results.

Mycelium eats it up on agar and stays white. I don't think it would work. It would be cool tho.

I was thinking about this the other day...the holiday themed novelty grows would be outstanding

I don't think food coloring will work though, for all the reasons others have mentioned 😢

But if we used dyes or water-based paints then maybe so? The fruits wouldn't be edible, but they'd look cool. Something must work

Edit: nice parallel thinking LewDoja

Had this colonizing for a few weeks with another 2 jars but those other jars became clearly contaminated. This one came out looking the "cleanest" out of the 3 total jars.

I noticed a small amount of condensation but most noticeably the slimy looking grains spread throughout the jar.

Any opinions on if this is bacterial?
Hoping to not waste the materials if I do spawn.
Thanks!

Definitely bacterial. You will probably get mushrooms if you spawn it to a shoebox or Ziploc bag, but I'd be hesitant to use more than like 1.5 quarts of substrate for that jar.

Thank you for the response. Will the mushrooms still be edible if they do fruit?

Yeah, mushrooms from bacterial substrate are fine. Dehydrating or boiling for tea will kill off anything that might cause food borne illness. You might still have nausea when you consume them but not because you used bacterial spawn.

Hoping to get some insight into this.

S2B: 8/8, 1:1.5 ratio, grain jar was thick milkshake myc, probably bacterial, smelled mushy. 1.5 quart used, direct to fruiting conditions, holes poked 1 " above sub level , 2" apart and then at top some holes again. Ambient >30 deg C RH 45~75% (its monsoon seaon here) no fixed light regimen just ambient indirect light. Cubes RW.

They are very thin and dangly, shall I just keep the bag open for more FAE? I suspect it will dry out if I do that.

I'd say you'd want more FAE. I'm basing that off of reading this. It looks very similar to the fruits that are lacking in proper FAE.
