Spawning The Beefy Tub

Edit 12.14.25
Video companion episode to the Beefy Tub Tek!

EDIT 2/23/25. As part of a campaign to update all my old teks, I've updated this tek. I've changed the way I spawn tubs quite a bit I guess and its time to edit this tek, as is my custom. Always be looking for better ways. Whatever you do it life, always be totally into doing that thing and doing it better. So Where ever you see the strikethrough I'm making an edit and I'll use a different color of font for the edit.

So I guess I spawn a little differently and I thought Id make a quick tek for my method because I've had such great success with it. I've picked up a few little tricks and tools over the years to make the job a lot cleaner and easier as well. I like a thicc substrate. I find that thicker substrates yield much better and have a greater propensity to flush multiple times. I use Pasty's Ez Dial Monotubs. Its not really fair of me to say I use Pasty's tubs. More, I borrowed some concepts from his system and tweaked them somewhat. It really depends on your climate and I've found it can depend on the time of year. I live in a very arid climate and in the winter the air in my place is much drier and I use a little more tap on the holes. I also added a couple holes to the lids. I find that it seems to help with the center of my surface maintaining the right condition. I also found that it helps water not condense on the lid and rain down. Not going to post a whole tek about it or even pictures right now. Just eyeball it and use common sense. I really like these sterilite 16 quart tubs.I still like them but you can't find them. I use the target brand 16qt now. They're shorter but I don't need much height for the stuff I grow these days. As with my other teks, I've included a lot of visuals. Some things are just easier done than said. I realize there are many threads for spawning a tub but I still see so many poorly prepared subs. Why does it matter? Because inconsistently prepared substrates yield inconsistent results. Also, a lot spawning of teks are combo teks. This tek is meant to be a stripped down and highly visual guide that assumes you already know how to develop clean spawn and prepare coir to field capacity. If you don't, you can find this information in the hitchhikers guide linked in my signature.

EDIT 4/12/25. I had a really confusing paragraph here about my spawn ratio. Forget about it. This tek is to make two tubs using four quarts of spawn total. Two quarts into each tub.  Half a brick each, minus a quart each, to be used as top-dress.

A blurb about coir prep: I use a high-cap digital scale to prep coir. I'm not going to write a tek about this, I'll just cover it real quick here.
1. Weigh your brick and multiply that figure by 4.25.
2. Resulting figure is your water weight.
3. Put big pot on scale and tare. Pour Water into the pot or use the dish sprayer thing or whatever you want.  I keep a 2.5 gallon jug of filtered water around at all times because.
Ex. 600g brick x 4.25 = 2550g (or 2.55 LITERS)
4. boil water. Pour water into bucket with brick. Put lid on. Do NOT shake it. (or do if you wanna see some shit and possibly get burnt) Done deal. use when cool. (after shaking it a bit)

Materials: A bucket of prepped coir. A clean empty bucket and lid I only add dry verm if I fucked up my field capacity and added too much water. This will soak up additional water but verm is otherwise purposeless. Two four quarts of clean spawn. A Mid sized tub with a gasket seal and snap-locks for mixing the ingredients. (Nah) A rubber tile float (still fuck yeah)A clean quart jar for measuring Two clean quart jars. You'll see.. No, I don't use liners. Ill get to that. A pair of clean nitrile or latex gloves. Its not necessary in terms of sanitation, but I don't like getting coir under my fingernails. Optional, A digital High-cap scale.

0. Okay step zero. You take your prepped coir and you split it in half. You can use a high-cap scale to get this perfectly or just eyeball it. If you happen to have a high-cap scale--Which i HIGHLY recommend for a lot of other jobs, namely coir prep--You can put the empty bucket on the scale (no lid) tare it, then put the prepped-coir bucket on the scale, (no lid) and thats your total coir weight. Multiply by .5 and thats half. dump half into the empty bucket. Now take a jar of coir out of each one and set it aside. This will be used later to top-dress

1. Break up your spawn and dump it in the mixing tub. buckets which now contain half a brick of coir minus a quart jar worth.  two quarts of spawn in each one respectively I personally bash it on my thigh but you can use a phone book or a tire or the corpse of your enemies.

2. Break up any remaining clump with your pink little mits.

3. Dump 8 quarts of coir (or Coir/verm) into the mixing tub. nah

Heres what a quart of coir should look like. I don't pack it but I do fill it and shake it gently to settle. You should have pulled a jar out of each bucket of coir as part of step 0

yyyep. Its a lot of coir.

4. Shake it just as you would a new born baby. Still true, but pretend the tub in this gif is a bucket

5. Pour the contents of the mixing tub buckets---which now should both contain half a brick of coir (Minus 1 quart each) plus two quarts of spawn each.  (total of four qts of spawn), well shaken--each into the monotub. Modified shoebox? Ez dial Shoe-box? Whatever the fuck you want to call it is fine by me

6. Now for the tile float. I use this to level and compress the substrate. I like this one as the length happens to be the exact width of the tub.

Take your time. Do a good job. Don't pack with all your might, just be firm and pay special attention to the edges. I find that if I pack the edges well, I don't get sidepins at all and I don't need a liner. I see a lot of new growers skipping this step and go into their grow with a choppy looking loose substrate. This is a mistake. It will invariably cause inconsistencies in your surface conditions and make for a shitty pinset. Pits and low spots tend to pool water which causes myc-mat and matted myc just won't pin for shit, and besides, its ugly.

7. Pseudo casing time. This technique was deveoped by Stipe-n Cap and has many benefits I won't get into but you should read his tek and you should pseudocase all your grows. I add two more one quarts of coir on top of the leveled and compressed substrate and spread it out as best I can with my hand.

8. Level and compress again with the tile float. Same as before. Make it pretty. Don't leave coir all stuck to the sides of the tub. Do it like you actually like yourself.

Thats it. Your very own ez dial Beefy Tub. I don't use micropore. Yes I do, but apparently only in the winter when the furnace dries my place out to nose-bleed conditions I just set it and forget it until its time to monitor surface conditions. If you're not familiar with that concept you need to read about it.  I don't allow the walls or the lid to drip onto my sub. You can wipe the walls dry with a paper towel if that starts to happen or shake the lid dry. No, opening your tub won't contaminate it. The spawning process isn't even close to sanitary and that entire concept needs to go away like a bad dream.

Voila.

You're trying to mess with my head, Beef.  You start with the 16 quart tubs, and then you finish with 20 quart tubs.

My brain is fragile right now.  60 grams fresh of Nats tore my brain up.

Some notes -

- It might be good to fully link "Pasty's Ez Dial Monotubs" since you don't re-explain the hole setup.
- I think it takes less effort to mix up sub/spawn with your hands than it does to pick up however many pounds of sub and shake it.  Just saying.
- I use gloves for prep too, but I don't like waste.  I started using reusable rubber kitchen gloves for prep.  It's an option that works.

Anyway, thanks for another great write-up.

I'm now realizing that there is a 16 qt and a 20 qt that are almost identical.  I think that's why I'm confused.

So you're definitely using the 16 qt?  I have some of the 20 qt ones, but either way your tek should work fine.

this is totally contingent on the variety.  Some varieties suck the sub dry and you'll only get one big flush, a second smaller one if you're lucky. My 'classic' cubes tend to get 2 big flushes and a 3rd. I could probably get more but I don't really waste the time and space. I live for canopies.

Semps put out a massive first flush and barely shrunk the sub. It appears to be hammering out a second massive flush as we speak and according to CB, he gets up to NINE FLUSHES on semps. Totally wild.

PE tends to make blobs the first flush and then second flush will yield some good dongs. Third flush is possible with enough water. (enough beef)

FP+ and other prolific pinners tend to strip the sub bare of water in one or two flushes and the third isn't worth waiting for even if you try to re-hydrate.

Thanks for another great post beef! I was trying to find info on this in pastys EZ dial post but it seems appropriate so I'll just ask here, can you write the exact holes you made for an ez dial monotub this size? Pastys post mainly focuses on very large( in my opinion) 66qt tubs, but I want more like a shoebox size ez dial tub. Here are the dimensions on the box I want to spawn in, any advice would be great!

Just wanted to mention the community developed the use of a top layer, stipe just put it in a writeup with a bunch of other good info.

I love the use of a tub to mix spawn, can't believe I never though of that.
Great idea!

I usually use a soldering iron too, but it does make fair bit of smoke.  At least it smells quite a bit.  I should do that in the garage, but I usually just double up on good N95 masks and try not to leave plastic on the soldering iron tip to burn.

I've recently found that even a gentle heating of a drill bit is enough to get it through the plastic easily.  I may stick to this method in the future.

Wow. I have been using a 20 liter tub with 2 quarts spawn and 3 quarts coir with a quart for a psuedo casing last run. Before that i was using 1:2 ratio with no casing layer. Interestlingly this was the first time my APE didnt blob on the first flush.
I never dreamed of using such high ratio. Makes sense I guess. That would hold a lot of water. Will definitely give this a run.

Hey Beefy, this looks great. Gonna try this on my next tubs.

What I wonder is how on earth you've managed to compress 12qts of material down to what looks like a 5qt slab. I tried with my tile float and some damp coir, but I could at most get it down to about 8qt.

It may be due to the tub you are using is made different than the one Beef is using. All tubs are not created equally, unless it is the same brand and capacity. He is also compressing the shit out of the coir.
You can only compress coir so much. You will notice if you compress it very hard it will kind of spring back up a tad. So don't worry about too much compression. He also is packing the case just as hard as the sub as well.

I can be a complete idiot, but I just followed this with a 2:10 ratio (2 quarts pseudo-casing). I'm using a 16 QT container and packed this shit out of my spawn+bulk. There's only about 5" of room from the sub to lid.

I don't understand how you've fit 12 QTs of sub into a 16 QT container with so much room left. I mean, we've the same volume container and sub. And you even said not to pack with all your might. It's obviously too late for me to change anything, and if I need to I'll adapt to a dub-tub.

I think for my next attempt I'll just do 1:5 per each 16 QT container.

Thanks for the thoroughness btw! gifs are perfect.

Okay, Beef. I have just spawned my first ever grain jars to bulk, Beefy-style. Though, with the slight necessary modification that shrinkflation has caused 16qt tubs to now be 15qt tubs (!!), at least at Target where I bought mine. But I've read enough on here that cubes just wanna grow that I think it's going to work out okay.

I like your crisp, clean, beefy style. Thanks for the bangin' tek.

One 650g brick coir
= 4 quarts hydrated coir
= 1 gallon
= 16 cups
= 7.5lb
= 120 ounces
= 3.34kg
...approximately

= 2 bricks per 16quart tub, as I read it.

Re: Beefs Beefy Tub Tek [Re: DeviantTex]
    #28642070 -

And for any of you nerds who want to know how I got to 7.5lb:

Q = 1quart = 0.03342 ft^3 (volume of a quart)
Cv = 1 brick = 2"x4"x8" = 0.037ft^3 (volume of a coir brick)
Cm = 650g = 1.43lb (weight of a coir brick)
Wd = 62.4lb/ft^3 (density of water)
Wm = ? lb (weight of water - this is what we're solving for)

4Q = Cv + Wm/Wd (solve for Wm)

Wm + Cm = 7.5lb

Note: I wrote that out because A) I'm slagging off work a bit and 2) I'm actually kinda interested in finding out how accurate that is. Somewhere in the annals of the forums I saw someone (Bod?) recommend a weight or volume of water that's probably about right to hydrate a brick of coir, but I couldn't find it when I went looking recently.

This math says it'd be about 3 quarts, or 2.8kg. Anyone want to (ahem) weigh in on that?

Well, Beefman, it's working, and I thank you. Here's my first ever tub. I know it looks pretty good for a first tub, but I'm kind of mad about it. What's with the bald spot? Why's it so uneven? And look at all those goofy side pins. I admire their enthusiasm, of course, but... grumble. I was really hoping to get to feel smug about a proper canopy. Le sigh.

I may have underestimated the amount of force required in the compression step of things. Will rectify. In the meantime, I think your 4:1 is great for my environment, and appreciate your teachings.

I'm too paranoid not to use a liner but discovered as I was making the holes for a couple of these today that I can double up on 30 gal kitchen trash bags and they fit right over the lid. No folding or taping. I'll be able to just snap them over the lid, stuff and trim. Nice side benefit. Can't wait to spawn to these!

I noticed in the Coir prep and in this tek it does not appear that the coir is ever pressure cooked or otherwise sanitized (other than the boiling water during prep).
After reading this quote it seems like that is not needed?  Isn't adding potentially contaminated coir a problem?

Let me see if I can help put this to rest in my own words.  Im an abstrationist.  I understand the world in relatives and associations. Metaphors are how I make sense of the world so let me tell a story for you and for posterity:

Your success from the point of spawning a tub onward is 100% contingent on the health of your spawn.  Lets think of coir as being a battlefield.  Its not nutritious in and of itself, but the grain within (which is guarded by our allies) is.

sure there is definately other hostiles on the battlefield, but theyre not developed.  Spores, even trichoderma spores, bacterial endospores, are present. Thats a fact of life.  theyre on your skin presently too, but I can assure you, youre not about to be taken over by mold or yeast.

So heres our batflield. No matter how you prepped it, the hostiles are still just mere gametes.  (reproductive cells).  theyre not even babies yet, much less grown men who can pick up a weapon and fight.  To complicate things for our enemies,  wet coir contains no essential nutrition so the liklihood of developing into a soldier seems bleak.

Now here comes the allies.  Two full jars or clean spawn is like air driopping in the entire 101st airborn division onto the battlefield.  Theyre fully delveloped, they have rations, and they have guns, and there is literally millions if not tens and hundreds of millions of them.  They've trained their whole life for this moment, and they were expecting an army or men with weapons.  (As there surely would have been in the wild)

what they find is an almost empty battlefield. Maybe a few toddlers are trapsing around looking for their mommies. Maybe a few starving men wandered onto the field too.  Maybe they fell right out of your nose.  No matter theye marched right over the top of all the same. Left to starve.  There will be nothing for anyone to eat but our allies, and their prescious grains.

The end.

Does that make more sense now?  So like Goat said, it really doesnt matter how you prep.  Hes a TC without the tag as far as Im concerned and his method is just as good as Derrayled's. (A tagged TC, who preps his coir with cold water) Both growers, I have admired, learned from, and looked up to for years.  Whos way is better?  Youd have to be a member of the 101st airborn to know that.

I personally use hot water because its a good feeling knowing we killed a few stragglers before we drop our army off.  That, and I hear it makes a softer battlefield.

Has anyone used these 27 qt purple handle containers? sterelite 27 qt

I have been spending way too much time deciding which container to use when I progress to A2G and these seem kind of perfect to me. I was planning on doing pasty's hole pattern using this tek and these look like similar length and width to what Beef is using, except these have more headspace and clear lids, which both seem beneficial. Just wondering if these have been vetted before spending any money... I can't think of any down side, but I don't know enough to be confident.

Hey Beefy I used your method but now I have a monotub with side growth and also growth on the bottom. I followed your instructions so I'm not sure what I did wrong. I can see that one user above also has the same issue.

Do you think pressing the substrate even harder would resolve the issue? I plan to spawn 3 more tubs tomorrow and don't want to make the same mistake. Thanks in advance.

gosh i totally forgot about this tek. i should update it.

first of all, i cant call what i do "ez dial monos"

theyre ez dial shoeboxes lets be real here.

also, i dont use that tupperware thing to mix anymore.  what i do is this:

two five gal buckets.  one empty one full of prepped coir. (1 brick)

i take two quart jars, fill em with coir, set them aside.

i take the lid off the empty bucket, i put it on the scale and tare it off.  then i put the full bucket on the scale (no lid) and divide the resulting figure in half.

i pour half into the empty bucket.

now i put two qts spawn into each bucket. lids on, shake the shit out of them.  pour into tubs.

the rest is pretty much the same as original.  i only use 1 qt to pseudocase now tho.

of course, you could just eye ball it if you dont have a high-cap scale.

Thanks for the tek info, Mr. Beef. I am a little confused because it appears what youve used were monotubs. Am I mistaken?

Also, I see the term ez dial used frequently. But what does it actually mean?

Finally, I am excited to use your Beefy tek! But can I scale it down to shoebox size? I am trying to keep things a bit more....compact, considering where I am. If I scale down to shoebox, do I need to be cautious of anything not mentioned in your tek guide?

Since it's a "just" 16qt tub he's calling it a shoebox(I think). Spawn to bulk ratio is 2qt spawn 8qt coir + 2qt pseudo casing(he has mentioned that his pseudo casing now is 1qt). He also said recently that to get field capacity he is doing 4,2ml of water pr 1g of coir.

Ez dialed monotub

You can scale it down, but if you want it to be "beefy" I think you have to fill the whole shoebox and then dubtub or fruit in a larger tub. If going that route you can check out stipe & cap's video here

So ez dial really means a tub of some type with drilled holes for FAE?

I like the suggestion to dubtub. I think that's the route that will suit my situation the best. I'll keep it beefy.

And if I'm understanding correctly, is pseudocasing simply a layer of verm on top?

Happy to help, I'm pretty new to this, but I have read these two TEK's over and over and just did my first 4 tubs using both.

The EZ dialed tub is a tub where Pasty did many tubs to figure the out how many holes and where it is best to place them for best results, follow the TEK and you're good. If you are going with the dubtub, obviously don't make EZ dialed holes.

Beef uses coir for pseudo casing(so do I and a lot of others) but many also use a coir verm combination, like 80% coir 20% verm, I have never used verm so look in to it if going that route.

For your shoebox 6L, here’s what I do… 1qt:2qt colonized grain to bulk coir (field capacity) with a thin pseudo-casing (1/2”-3/4”).  Hit it with mist and place the lid on it.  Leave it alone, no misting no fanning.

I will have to get into this a little bit later when I get off of work it's just a hell of a day.  They just did a goddamn skin biopsy right next to my eyeball so my whole eyeball is fucking numb but yeah I don't know at what threshold we start calling something a mono tub versus a shoebox. I guess when I think of a mono tub I'm imagining a lid that has latches

Followed this Tek for my first Shroomery inspired mono, but it's kinda funny to me that I prepped my tub only a few hours before you posted these updates.

Regardless, I think it's a great Tek; the tile float idea is genius.

Learned a lot from you already Beef so I'll be sure to incorporate your updates in to my next mono.

Heres what a quart of coir should look like. I don't pack it but I do fill it and shake it gently to settle. You should have pulled a jar out of each bucket of coir as part of step 0

take out two

7. Pseudo casing time. This technique was deveoped by Stipe-n Cap and has many benefits I won't get into but you should read his tek and you should pseudocase all your grows. I add two more one quarts of coir on top of the leveled and compressed substrate and spread it out as best I can with my hand.

use one

Edit:  I find that all Shroomery stores have liquid syringe spores, and some also have spore prints.  I gather that using malt agar in petri with a print is because there have been contaminants before and the idea is to spread out a culture to isolate the pure?

And would I be right in believing that liquid cultures will not keep for very long, and that spore prints will?  Should they be refrigerated?

After extensive research here I've decided to try Psilocybe Huautla (quote "my beloved Huautlas"), Panaeolus Cyan, and Psilocybe Golden Teacher.  I've actually managed to find the first at one store.  I don't want a hard-ass 'I am an insect tripping my ass off' kind of acid trip as I had in high school, but a pleasant, instructive, comfortable one as I had with psilocybin and mescaline.  (The mistake many beginners make is taking too much of any psychedelic)

Oh my. I think I figured out a big oops.  I’ve been having problems with my tubs stalling.  In the water equation, I included the brick in the total weight.

Ex. 600g brick x 4.25 = 2550g (or 2.55 LITERS)

But, after rereading it, I think it’s 2550g in addition to the 600g of coir.

Hi bud, sorry to hear about your stalling tubs, I know the feeling  Good news is you probably found the reason and I bet your next tub will improve a lot :awesomenod:

It's a good thing to follow a trusted TEK from a trusted cultivater so you are on the right path and that is great, well done. As mentioned, even though the TEK is sound, coir ain't always the same, so I would suggest to always check field capacity by mixing the cooled coir and then squeezing a a hand full before use, keep up the good work buddy, you'll figure it out in no time

See what I did there @DERRAYLD?

First grow in 6 years and I basically followed this exactly, except tub size and spawn ratio. Everything was and still is going well, so thank you for this excellent write up.

Tubs are beginning to fruit 13 days after spawning, and I’m noticing some side pinning, which I saw earlier in the thread is likely genetics in your experience. I’m only asking, because the main variable that doesn’t use measurement is how hard you’re compacting the substrate. I went pretty hard in hopes of avoiding some side pinning but am looking to see if there really isn’t much that can be done about it and a few side pins are to be expected.

Thanks!

Haha I’d love to take credit but between yourself, pasty’s, and comebackkids threads anyone can achieve results with these tubs. I personally have to monitor humidity due to extreme fluctuations in temp, but just adjusting the holes as needed I didn’t have to mist one time.

Thank you for your detailed write ups, it really has made life much easier for those that have come after y’all. I was nervous jumping straight into a different tek after all these years that I hadn’t tested but have now adopted this as my main method.

If I understand this rightly it’s 1:2.5 ratio. 650gm cocopeat expand to 9-10Liter. Half is used for one tub. 4.5-5Liter with 2 liter of grains, that’s 6.5-7liter of final bulk substrate. That’s exact volume is needed for my 16L container at 7-8cm height. Thank you. I will use this method for my first grow. Currently culture is on agar colonising. Am I missing something or wrong calculation ?

Mr Beef – first off, thanks a ton for making this guide and updating it as you iterate! It is awesome. I’m a long time reader/follower and first time poster. (Is it okay I posted this in this thread?)

I have done a ton of grows in the past year and everything seems to work great usually. I wanted to experiment with the Beefy Tub Tek and my results are not what I was hoping for (so, let's make the assumption I am doing something wrong).

I am having some stalling issues with my current Beefy bins and could use your help. I have done this same process dozens of times with other bins and have not run into this before. I am fully okay with being patient, but these are weeks behind where I would normally be.

These are Leucistic Golden Teachers. Innoc’d in grain jars from LC 9/22, S2B directly into FC on 11/4. Sub is 2:1 CC to spawn. Casing layer of just CC at ~1/4”. Temp is 71-72 F, and humidity is ~99% in the bins.

The first couple days after S2B, there was visible, quick myc growth. Then everything just seems to have stalled for a couple weeks. These pins popped up two days ago, but obviously not the full canopy I was hoping for.
The only thing I can think of for a variable I can’t control is the air outside the bins is dryer than usual (25-35%), but I’m not sure how that would affect anything.

I am very confident the myc is not fighting contam.

A squeeze test was performed on the coir after hydrating it and it seemed spot on.

I just saw you mention in one post in this thread to remove the gasket on the lid of the tub if it has one. Should I do this? Any other ideas what I could have done wrong?

nah its colonized under that dry layer so it gives the appearance that its stalled.  then it doesnt have enough gas to flush.  ive done it before when i was trying to find the lower end of field cap limits.

I weighed the block of coir at 685g. Then used your 685 * 4.25 formula and got 2911, which translated to ~2.9 liters. I got the water up to a boil. I had the coir in a Home Depot bucket, poured in the water and covered it. I left it overnight and mixed it with the fully colonized grain in the AM into the tub (all specs are supposed to be to your Tek - only difference is I used 20qt Sterlite vs your 16qt). Are my coir/water numbers off?

Could the drier air outside the tub (I'm using a new room) be causing the tubs to dry out? I do not currently have the holes covered. I didn’t pay super close attention to surface conditions based on the Tek. That may have contributed?

Thanks again for the guidance.
