pf tek pinhead formation - please advise
    #365753 - 08/02/01 04:33 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

hey everyone, thanks for your time.

i'm a first time grower, using the pf tek, 1/2 pint jars and all. my first two jars colonized quick, 100% in about 14 days. so i moved them to two coke bottle terrariums. small white fuzzballs soon appeared on various locations on the surface of the cake. i was told that this means the humidity is too high, so i adjusted it downward by making the air volume larger. i have no changes in the cakes, its been about 5 days in the coke bottles (post-birthday). is this normal? when should i really expect pins to form? is there a place i can get pics of cakes that are right BEFORE they pin? also - i have more jars, 2 more have reached 100%. i was pondering building the ultra sonic humidifier terrarium setup. but if i already have too much humidity in my coke bottles, is this a bad idea? though im told thats the way to go. also - how long before i should start worrying about no pins, i.e. whats the average number of days between birthday and pin formation? any help is greatly appreciated. thanks again.

Next time wait for invitro pins to form. This is an important part of the PF-Tek. it can take weeks for pins to form in the terrarium.

b-day to pin formation ususally occurs within a week but can take up to 2. cakes look the same before and during pinning, but look for signs of fresh fluffy growth on the outside to indicate good health. I would suggest you keep the humidity higher, fuzzballs arent bad.
