PF Tek: Cake recipe Conversion Confusion!! * 1

I was originally going to use the PF cake recipe from the PF Tek for Simple Minds but then things started going wrong. I realized that the recipe used the European metric system and posted a question about it. Then someone told me the original PF Tek update was the conversion.

PF Tek for Simple Minds (Updated: January 25 2004):
For one ? pint jar(~240 ml) you will need:

140 ml vermiculite
40 ml brown rice flour
some vermiculite to fill the jar to the top (app. 20 ml)
water

PF Tek formula update (Updated: February 27 2002):
For 1/2 pint canning jars (250 ml):

1/4 cup of brown rice powder
1/2 cup of vermiculite
45 - 60 ml (cc) water (1/4 cup = 59 ml)

That is definitely not a correct conversion. Look at the proportions, the first recipe I listed is about 3 parts Vermiculite, 1 part BRF. The second recipe is 2 parts Vermiculite.

Also, the first recipe has no specific amount of water. The Tek is designed so that you add just enough water for the Vermiculite to absorb, which makes much more sense to me, while the second recipe has a specific amount.

Please help because this is driving me nuts!! :nut:

I always used the 1:2:1 ratios. Maybe more vermiculite just keeps it airier and more hydrated so it colonizes faster (albeit, with lower yields)...?

This is what I use when making my jars....

Per 1/2 Pint Jar:
2/3 cup of Vermiculite
1/4 Brown rice flour
1/4 Water

Two parts verm, 1 part water, 1 part brf.

Add the water to the verm first, makes mixing easier.
