Tub in Tub?
    #3156990 - 09/20/04 07:32 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Can someone please explain this method for incubation of Jars.

I have searched all over and can't find an explanation of how to do it/what you need.

two plastic tubs of equal size. (rubbermaids) Fill one with water, put a fully-submersible fish-tank heater in the bottom. Put the other tub in the first tub and secure down with zip ties or weights. The water will go up the sides of the inside tub creating an even temp throughout.

keep readin

Incubator set up.

1. First thing get your bottom tub and put in your heater. I also add a water pump to mix the water that way it heats up much more evenly but it isn?t a necessary item. I got the tape from a boat shop and it has been working for some time. Good stuff for underwater.

2. Next put something (I used tall half pints) in each corner of the tub. This will keep the heater and pump safe from being smashed if I put in to many jars or do something stupid.

3. Now be sure to set the heater before you put on the top tub. I attach the top tub with zip ties cause the top tub will want to float.

4. Add the water. I like to add as much water as I can before it starts to spill out.

5. If you use the heaters with the external controls set them now to get ready for the jars. Mine use a dial and a sensor that gives the temp inside the chamber rather then the water. It also has a metal bulb rather then a glass one.

6. Finished

I have a heater with external temp probe, but when I put the probe inside the tub, i would get temps that fluctuated by as much as 15-20 deg.

When I put the probe in the water, my temps only fluctuated +/-5 deg.

did you experience this too? If so, how were you able to solve it?

Do you use a blanket on top to insulate the tub in tub?

Weird I dunno, I have a heater with an external probe as well and have no problems putting it in the tub. Like it much better then my other one with no external probe.

Your temps fluctuated by 15 to 20 damn. No I didn't have the problem sorry I don't know how to fix that one. I keep the probe in with the jars and the most I get is a 4F fluctuation at most

yea, but when i put the temp probe for the water heater in with the water, the temps in the incubator stabilized to between 82-86F.
weird.

Although, I should note, ambient temps were consistently around mid to upper sixties. Could this be the cause? Could the probe get cooled off and make the water get too hot? even though it was in the incubator in between a bunch of jars and pretty well insulated from the ambient air?

Always cool to be safe.I had a heater get stuck on and wasted all the jars on bottom.I cried all day.I used a meat therm. That way its in with the jars and no need to open lid every time.

Good Luck

yes, but they take 12-24 hours before they get the water the right temp. I can see you wanting to buy a lower wattage because it's cheaper...

I don't even use a tub in tub. I use a heating pad setup I created. The temp. fluctuation is only about 4-5 degrees. I had the windows open in my house yesterday because it was beautiful outside... went to hang out with some friends and came back at 2:30 in the morning... it was about 60 degrees F in my house... but my incubator was only at 82. Nothing to really worry about, just closed the windows and went to bed. Woke up this morning, sitting right at 86. Gotta love ingenuity.

What temp. should I set my heater to to make sure that my incubator is 84-86? Right now the heater's set at like 85-86. It's still warming up the water though--my jars are in an incubator with a heating pad for the time being.
