I agree. I once gave this chick a capsule of 4-aco-dmt and she said she had a bad trip because she felt so weird being by herself and all this crap about her own feelings contributing to the bad trip.

If you think being by yourself is weird then you will definitely have a bad trip if you trip by yourself. That's why set and setting is so important. You need to have the right kind of thinking and be in the right place or the psychs will reinforce already established beliefs.

I agree with the general consensus here.

I don't think bad trips are these things that are super beneficial or some kind of lesson etc. all of the time.

Many people here are under the impression that psychedelics are perfected chemicals that are borderline supernatural that can only do harm if you mistreat them and are otherwise entirely beneficial.

I think they should be thought of more as unperfected yet still mind blowingly amazing tools.

All my "bad trips" have nothing to do with any mind set stuff etc. simply just bad situations as others have said. Suddenly getting overwhelmed. Not being able to sleep. Running into someone i know and having to pretend I'm sober. etc.

And sometimes its simply just down to brain chemistry. Like the other day a single tab mind fucked me randomly to the point where my brain was just kidna fried for 8 hours and couldn't think of much apart from "what the fuck is going on" However I know a load of people who can do things like take 3 tabs just for fun after bashing cocaine for 2 days, drink a bottle of vodka and go clubbing and still have a good time.

At a regular dose I cant really cant call any of my trips bad.
Only time it teetered into bad trip territory is intentional massive overdose and aborting the trip with other drugs. come to think of it only real bad trip is when you end up in cuffs.

I find some bad tripps are from people scared to let go. They allways wana be in controll an when tripping its hard to control how you feel an what you see if you never tripped before. But i know there are many diffrent factors as well to cause a bad tripp. I never had a bad trip yet i just let go an go with the flow. Tripping is not for every one i feel.

While I haven't had a trip that was like ^that^ through out the entire experience....I most definitely know how that goes :yesnod: . Mushrooms in particular bring up that theme for me more so than LSD, and it's typical for me to go through a little bit of those feels during the come up of a strong mushroom trip.

 ...I can concur with that somewhat. My only "bad trip" and my most difficult/uncomfortable times with psychedelics didn't occur until after 9+ years and 100+ trips .

A huge variety of catalysts & reasons can bring about a "bad trip".

Simply being too high....being in a setting that's uncomfortable...existential dread....paranoid thoughts...feeling the the pain and suffering of the world...Having negative repressed memories and experiences start to bubble up to the surface...Recalling or experiencing traumatic/repressed memories all over again....The classic "I'm dying" freak out....etc etc etc....all sorts of things can make a trip really really unpleasant.

Like simply being too high for the setting.....Years ago a friend of mine took 3 doses of L while we were at this underground party (I took 1 that night and was super high). Long story short, they were some incredibly potent tabs and the setting was overly stimulating (massive sound system, lots of deep red colored lights, lots of people dancing, it was hot & humid, so humid that there was condensation "raining" down from the ceiling so everyone was soaking wet)..It was one big hot mess lol.....It was basically excruciating torture for my friend, perpetual sensory overload, he couldn't talk, he couldn't do much of anything, he barely held it together and I basically played baby sitter and followed him around all night because he was on the verge of running out of the place (and this party was in an industrial/shady part of San Francisco, so not the area to be running around with a gourd full of LSD at 3am).

The experience was so stressful and hectic for him that it left him out of sorts a bit for a couple months after.

My only "bad trip"......I've always sailed quite smoothly and keep a level-sensible head when the going gets weird. But that all went out the window for me one night.

It was brought about by a single thought. The thought was something along the lines of "What if I was seen picking the mushrooms earlier today" , then from there paranoid thoughts started to spiral out of control.

I picked some mushrooms from some patches in my town one day but they were all in very open public places, one of them was in the landscaping of a bank. Later that night I took about 2g of allenii in tea.

2 to 3 hours after drinking the tea the thought of getting caught up with what I had came about (several ounces dry, and a few pieces of cardboard spawn). This thought quickly started to fester and spiral out of control. My "level headed-ness" went out the window, paranoid thoughts & imagery started to manifest only reinforcing this thought & feeling that I had been seen picking the mushrooms and a search warrant on my place was likely inevitable .

As this worry, fear, and paranoia blossomed I started to feel very hot....a hot & itchy, pins & needles dysphoric feeling swept across my body, inside and out. I soon tore all my clothes off and was pacing around bare ass naked in my room, pulling my hair about every which way.

After about a minute of being stuck in the state of "I'm fucked, I'm absolutely fucked" , I changed modes into "No, I'm not going to let this happen". I got a trash bag and immediately began to throw away the cardboard spawn I had going, and some mushrooms I had drying at the time. (my dry mushrooms was the next thing I was going to grab, and it was going down the toilet). Once everything was in the bag I put on some shorts (fortunately I remembered to put at least one piece of clothing back on) and darted out the front door....Now mind you it's about 3am & 25 degrees or so outside and all I have on is a pair of swimming trunks...no boxers, no shoes, no shirt....along with some crazed saucer eyes.

I had no idea where I was going or what I was going to do with the bag I had in hand  , I just wanted to get rid of it and out of my possession ASAP . I made it to the center-line of the road in front of my place, looked left, looked right....at this point a little bit of sense & clarity of mind came through and said "This is how you're going to get caught, get the fuck back inside the house now" .

I ran back into the house with the bag still in hand, still chock full of fear and panic. There were brief moments where I could see how ridiculous I was acting and have some clarity, but the fear kept engulfing me....I desperately needed to talk to someone about the situation I was in. I repeatedly tried calling the only friend I knew I could talk to about what was happening, no answer.

I lived with my sister & her BF at the time and made the decision to knock on her door. Straight away I told her I was on mushrooms and tried to explain to her that I needed her BF to give me a ride to a trash can so I could get rid of what I had . She's not experienced with psychedelics what so ever and didn't really understand the seriousness of what "I" was going through  , and probably a bit annoyed that I was waking her up at 3am for such a thing . But she was patient and as understanding as she could be I guess lol. She explained that it would be very sketchy to drive around and dump something like that somewhere in the middle of the night, I understood her point and agreed.

...Around this point of talking to my sister, I start to come down and realized the absurdity of how I was acting, though still filled with fright and not knowing what to do with my self. I apologized to her, told her I was coming down and that we could resolve this in the morning, and I was going to try to chill out & calm my self.

Shortly after this my friend called me back...I spoke to him for a few minutes explaining the whole ordeal, there was still quite a lot of lingering anxiety and fear but the "panic" had subsided. Just talking to someone helped tremendously, I was already laughing at my self but still stressed the fuck out in a way that I've never felt before.

I spent the next couple hours coming down, going inward trying to create and nestle up in a calm & cozy internal space.

The entire experience was very humbling in a way, to say the least. Like mentioned, I've always remained cool & level headed during all my previous experiences with psychedelics....What triggered this little freak out for me was that I rarely have anything in my possession other than a gram or two of pot, and if I do have something other than pot it's a mere dose or two worth.....so I've never had any worries about getting caught up with possession of something that could actually put me behind bars.

Potentially being seen and ID'd as the one picking the mushrooms and having some "weight" on me for the first time ever planted the thought of getting caught up and put behind bars (literally my biggest fear)...and it all spiraled out of control from there. For the next couple weeks after I was a bit rattled from the fear and anxiety I went through that night, but it's made me even more wise & careful about these sorts of things.

No.  More like complete unending existential dread, often with no specific cause discernible.  Possibly it's a basic prototypical mammalian condition amplified by the drugs.  Typified by feeling there's no hope of release, so basically infinite regression into total blackness.  Not much fun if it happens, and it will happen if you trip enough.  But you can learn from it just like from any other trip, and of course it does pass eventually.

IME negative trips show up about the time you start feeling you've got all this tripping stuff figured out.  :laugh2:

I know this is a really old thread, so sorry. This just happened to me. I used mushrooms to get sober from alcohol (13 months, yeah!!),  and I was tripping every 2-6 weeks - high doses. I had some disturbing things happen, but manageable, and so much wonder and  magic and hard work. But last night I experienced several hours of nothing but hopelessness…I didn’t believe in myself or anyone I know and felt completely alone in existence. It was the most horrible and lonely feeling I could ever imagine. One message I got is that I need to lay off the mushies for a long time, maybe for good. But I’m also worried that I’m permanently fucked up and will never be happy behind “the veil” again.

Somebody who’s been there - please tell me it goes away!  I’m so sad my mushies turned on me.

It sounds like you're putting too much emphasis on the mushroom and not your own mind. Maybe you felt that way because there is a reason that has nothing to do with mushrooms.
Mushrooms bring things to the forefront that we may carry deep inside (as I'm sure you know) it did it to you this time in a way that is unfamiliar to you.
Maybe laying off mushrooms will help but I feel like trips like that just happen too.
It will fade just like how after a "good" trip that sensation leaves in time.

Thank you for the answer - it gives me hope that this isn’t permanent. I’m sure it was a combo of the mushrooms and stuff inside of me, but it didn’t feel therapeutic at all. It felt like hell!  Anyway, I appreciate your response.

Perhaps the message they were sending you, or you uncovered in yourself (however you see it), was simply that mushrooms aren't the answer to any of your questions right now.  It seems like people get the message when it is needed.  Sometimes it's to give a chance to walk independently on a path that doesn't include ingesting them.

I've watched my best friend go back and forth between alcohol abuse and mushroom use for almost 30 years.  He gets really great messages from mushrooms but never follows through.  It sucks to see him throw wisdom out the window.

Going back to alcohol is nothing to do with wisdom, it's about understanding the psychological mechanism of addiction. Once you realise which parts of your thoughts are addiction and which parts are you it's easy to separate and dismiss the addiction.

And...

Difficult trips will happen if you take psychedelics regularly. There is no escaping that. It's not a world of rainbows and marshmallows, it's mirror of our cognition. For example, if we didn't get a good night sleep the night before, ate a meal that didn't really agree with us at lunch, were maybe exposed to a virus that our body is fighting off but don't really feel, but generally we we to feel okay... then we take psychedelics, it can bring all of this minor stuff that's not really identifiable to a great big sort of existential crisis. All the little things just make it a damned nightmare. Fear and dread can kick in, but it's hard to identify why or what is going on. Sooner or later we get a rough one.

I've tripped 100's, maybe 1000's of times, and it still happens from time to time. I just ride it out, don't freak out, chalk it up to experience. Even scary trips are kinda curious if you've been there before and don't let it take over your emotions.

I am more surprised by people who seem nonchalant about psychs as if it is a walk in the park.

Sure, many a bad trip can be avoided by the correct set and setting and reasonable dosage. But psychs can put you through a ringer no matter what imho.

How open-minded do you need to be to accept psychedelic death fully with a smile on your face? How can you not freak out?

Sure, you can "let go" and see bliss on the other end. Or you can get stuck dying over and over and over again for eternity...

Mind you, I have never had a "full on" bad trip myself, yet I am terrified every time I come close to mushrooms.

My last bad one was with shrooms. I would classify 'bad' as anything that extends for most of the duration of the experience (not just the initial come up).

I thought I had long since mastered the whole surrender/let go thing, but that night, I was just using those mantras as magical words that would allow me to do no such thing!

For whatever reason, that night, I just wasn't in the mood to surrender.

Felt I was on the verge of complete alien auto-pilot/take over at one point, but I got into bed and followed my old rule. Do not move, no matter what they tell/show you! All I could do was suffer and fight my attempt to fight it for a few hours!

Was a good trip eventually (I've only ever had one trip that was bad even in hindsight) and one I look back on with fondness and nostalgia now.

Sometimes you just have to suffer!

I find that the best way of avoiding bad trips is to use psychedelics less frequently.

In a way it's kind of like friendships.

If you are a bit of novelty then people will often be more likely to welcome and enjoy your company!

Spend too much time together however and both parties tend to start getting on each others nerves and winding each other up.

Same with the entities, or spending too much alone-time with manifestations of ones own subconscious!

Sooner or later it will turn on you!

Or, at least, mine will!

I am only nonchalant about low and moderate doses.

btw, wisdom and alcohol occasionally seem to get all blended together and I am not sure much can be done about it.

Alan Watts' son complained he was a drunk. then again https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=drunken+buddhas
this is often the case, although the older buddhas will likely seem drunk anyway, and if they get much alcohol it can kill them on the spot.

then there is this sort of thing
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/michael-stone-yoga-dead-1.4218210
when the opiate call of the flesh toys with the clever little Buddha in our heads.

Michael Stone did a lot for the furtherance of mindfulness training in Canada.

I hope noone puts fentanyl in my mushrooms!

I love PS's posts!  I think he was "last seen" a few months ago?  Hope he's okay!

Thank you to everybody for the responses!  It helps just to hear from others who have been there.  I definitely am not nonchalant about psychedelics - I found someone underground to help me out of desperation, because I could not stand living as an alcoholic anymore, after 20 years.  I learned how to grow them, did lots of research, tripped with people, decided that they were more distracting than helpful, tripped alone.  I've had a few hard trips.  I only grow PE and I took large doses because I was on antidepressants.  I've since weaned off of those, and I still seemed to need large doses to do anything other than a recreational trip.  I think this has changed.  If I do this again, I'm going to assume my brain receptors have grown back and I no longer need the huge quantities.

I've made it a point to make each trip a ceremony, with lots of ritual, just to differentiate it from getting fucked up on alcohol.  But I think I've started to use it as a crutch.  I always want to get back to that point of connection, where everything makes sense and has a reason, everything is easy, and there's nothing to fear.  But maybe that's the same thing as chasing a high, at this point?  I don't know.

This last trip, there was NO good whatsoever.  I wasn't panicked - I was just numb.  I couldn't think of anything that mattered.  Every person in the world seemed like AI - I'm actually still struggling with this a little.  It's the worst feeling I could imagine - being completely alone, being able to do whatever I want, and not being able to think of a single thing I want or that matters.  Eating, sleeping, joy...whatever.  It was just total emptiness.  Being raised by Southern Baptist missionaries (and never having alcohol until I became a lawyer at age 31), when my trips get challenging, it's easy to feel that I'm damned to hell, and I deserve it for not going to church and reading my Bible. So yeah, there's definitely some underlying stuff and history going on there.  (Then again, I've had some pretty amazing Jesus moments out there, when I thought I had turned my back.  Even made me dig back in the Bible a bit.)

I agree that you can do this too frequently.  I'm going to take a long break and enjoy being sober and trying to regulate my emotions in other ways - therapy, friends, breathing, yoga, scuba diving, maybe meditation.  I've got plenty of mushies if I want them later.

I wish this stuff were legal and available by trained professionals.  When I tell people my story, they tend to want me to trip sit.  I've done it a bit, and it's so impossible to predict what the medicine is going to do and now it's going to conflict with people's expectations.  I took a trip sitting course, but I think I'm retired from that endeavor.

I started to attend an online recovery meeting last night to see if it would help get me back (haven’t been to one of those in a while, they never helped me get sober). It’s a women’s group called She Recovers. I’m sure they’re wonderful, but they all started their shares with their pronouns and litany of things they’re recovering from and spoke in such careful terms so as not to offend anyone for any reason…I had the creepiest feeling they were all AI and the world had ended. I said NOPE and turned it off.

Rational recovery is a way out of alcoholism. I figured a lot of it out myself with other addictions, but the book really helped with alcohol. I know it's not for everyone, but it does work for many people.
