Could be indicative of contam.  Sometimes you get them on cultures due to temp swings.  If shit looks weird, I just avoid it.  That said, it may grow out fine producing good areas for xfer.

So I just made semperviva LC with josex poke yesterday and already seeing strings in it, hasn't even been 24 hours. I made 5 jars of 100 ml each in case I get contam, saw strings floating in all 5. I was wondering if I'd know it when I see it, and if I'd know contam if I saw it, but seems to me it's gotta be mycelium, doesn't look like mold at all. Pretty cool!

How do I know when itā€™s ready to use? Iā€™ll be using a syringe and purchased grain bags (sterilized rye) with injection ports.

Do I agitate the jars or just leave them alone?

swirling the LC every few days has always done me right. i usually start thinking abt pouring when itā€™s about 1/3-1/2 colonized when settled but you can let ā€˜em go a long time on the shelf ime

Bacterial contams are fairly appearant by the cloudiness of the LC, but molds will usually look extremely similar to mycelium.  Gotta test the LC on agar to know for sure.

I also keep some plates in a sleeve and cover with a glove if I have more than I need. Seems to work pretty good

Trying out some methods to clean up cultures on agar. The blue is water agar, brown is tea agar and the slightly yellow is antibacterial agar. Got some inspiration and some of the TEKs from this thread. I used penicillin for the antibacterial agar with 10g agar and 4g LME. The tea agar was done with black tea (2 bags), 10g agar and 4g LME. Lets see how this goes :rasta:

The NE is a Nepalese cubensis from spore syringe that has already come a long way but still looks pretty sus. The PES Hawaiian doesn't look too sus but there's always a slight film around it that I'm suspecting if being bacteria.

I am wondering whether the sandwich TEK is necessary on tea or antibacterial agar or if the mycelium will outrun the contamination either way. Probably it's more of a question of how safe you want to be.. just wondering if anyone has some insight to this topic.

Will post some updates of the growth.

What is a good all around simple agar recipe using LME? Iā€™ve tried so many different things and Iā€™m still not happy yet. Everybodyā€™s plates always looking so nice I feel like and Iā€™m over here happy to get 1 look like the ones I see on here.

Have you tried just water agar?


Main problems are wispy growth and uneven growth. Usually very tomentose. Hardly ever get rhizo. And yea Iā€™ve done water sage a few times to save some bacterial plates. Right now I have a bunch of stuff on rit agar Iā€™m trying out. It looks great and then I transfer it back to nute agar and same thing. Wispy tomentose growth.

I have tons and tons of geneticsā€¦I really appreciate it thoā€¦Iā€™m running around 20 varieties right now and having the same issues with most of them. It kinda just started happening out of nowhere..havenā€™t changed anything until I started having issues and thatā€™s when I started changing the nute amounts. Then I started putting thing to rit agar and then transferring back to nute plates. Same thing. I guess next Iā€™m gonna do water agar back to nute platesā€¦I must have gotten some kind of embedded contam in my shit or something. I would think it was the filter needing changed on my FFU but itā€™s maybe 6 months old at best.

This is a great example of whatā€™s happening..this is Jack Frost..the black is rit agar..the blue is nute agarā€¦looks amazing on the ritā€¦transfer it to nuteā€¦it starts sectoring and getting height and turning super tomentose

Edit: this particular nute plate is 5G LME, 10G agar, 1G NY, 500 ml distilled water

Edit edit: Iā€™ve used those plates that look like that and they seem to colonize fine, even colonize sub fine. But they donā€™t fruit and eventually they get trich.

The clothes dyeā€¦supposed to work better than water agar at cleaning up stuffā€¦supposed to have a bacterial growth inhibitor in itā€¦it def makes shit clean up easier but I donā€™t think it does as well of a job as water agar..Iā€™m my opinion at least
