I'm actually not sure what it is because I excised and tossed it before it could fully mature. I was leaning towards some kind of Aspergillus, it looked kinda like this last I saw it (this is an Aspergiullus Niger pic from the web).

The excision was not successful (obviously), the plate now is being very slowly but steadily overrun by it but it hasn't formed a cohesive mycelium structure. It's just black sporangia/sporophores spread out in about half the petri. So it doesn't look like Aspergilus anymore, could be a Pin Mold but it's pretty fucking slow. I guess it has to fight with the cube myc for nutrients so it's slower than usual.

Here's what the plate looks like now :



And here's an another mold I've been growing. I guess this is Aspergillus, or Penicillum although the color is a bit off.

Some of the mycelium seems to be eating the food coloring in my cups. The bigger the colony, the more clear the agar is becoming.  Is this a thing or is there a hidden contamination doing it.

That’s a Normal occurance. Given the chance the Myc will devour all the food coloring you added. This plate was pretty and blue at one point in time

Possibly, I've seen it on grasses, water ways, and other places, it all looks different depending on environment.
It can get real dark and slimy. 
I was just tossing a relatively common slime mold out there.

I mean if they're wrapped shut with parafilm/clingwrap you should be good. And if you want to reuse the containers just open them submerged in your sink

Eh it's mostly about carrying moldy shit into my area and doing agar work with sporulating molds. Once they are in the plates I don't really worry about them escaping
