Only think I can think of is get some fresh malt extract and see if that helps. Potato water and grain wilater can be somewhat random in the amount of nutrients they carry, but if you have used them in the past without issue, could there be something different in the water (city water vs filtered vs distilled) or using different grains when prepping the grain water, even genetics. Lots of parameters to sort out, but I'm confident that you will get to the bottom of it!

Any time I've used grain water, the resulting growth was pretty meh.

That is my experience recently, it has been a rough go.

It is a germ plate for sure, however the type of growth carries between transfers, they do become more obviously rhizomorphic, but still looking weak.
Would you suggest a longer PC time such as say 40min? I was debating on 30-40min PC cycle because I hadn't used AC before. First time for all things.
I have all week and a large amount of supplies so if I have to run it again or remake the agar then that's what it takes.
Any suggestion on recipes? Any advice is welcome. Truly I would love to solve this.

Awesome, so lets say I ran this agar through the PC again at 45min, would that be sufficient or should I remake the whole batch?

If your agar is molding, definitely run it for 45 mins. No need to mix again.

Are you using the AC just for color?  At this point it may be worth going back to basics. A basic LME recipe and see how it does. I've had good success with:

  LME.  10 grams
  Agar    9 grams
  Peptone 1 gram
  Water 500 ml

The ranges I have:  LME    10-15  grams
                  Peptone    1- 2.5 grams
        Nutritional yeast    1- 2.5 grams
                      AC    1- 2.5 grams
                    Agar    7-10  grams
          All for 500 ml water

Yep just using the AC for color so I can more accurately diagnose what's going on.
I am pretty much going back to basics as PDA was my first type of successful agar.
Haven't used peoptone at all, but will try the rest of the recipe.

Great, since I'm making up multiple different batches today I might as well PC this next couple of 500ml bottles at 45min with LME.

For clarity, never reuse or re-sterilize contaminated agar. Just incase someone reading my previous statement reads it that way.

I get tiny brown bits (malt extract) if I run it more than 20-30mins. Myc does not seem to care, but it's unsightly. :shrug:

Although my weight is set at around 18-19psi so that might be it.

alright, I did up three different recipes last night. I then took two nice looking fruits from my best tub and did clones.
PDA: 150g potatoes, 10g agar, 1g yeast, 1g ac, PC 25min(bad idea)
Grain Water: 200ml distilled water, 300ml grain water, 10g agar 1g yeast, Filtered, PC for 45min.
LMEA: 15g LME, 10g agar, 1g yeast, Filtered, PC 45min

So this is a LC test I did. I dripped a few drops on the dish and when it started to grow it grew all patchy in like each of the areas where it was dripped. I figured it would all blend together but it continued to grow all patchy.  Is there a reason why? Really just curious.

For some added detail this was noob “black” agar I made with food coloring rather than activated charcoal.  Learned why no one does it that way….
