I'm new to agar. I've done about 20 jars (1/2 pint) of all different kinds. BRF agar, LME agar, potato flakes/corn syrup agar, PDA. Inoculated via MS syringe, transfers, steaking with a loop, G2A, etc. Every single time the mycelium just seems absolutely intent on growing upwards rather than outwards. Am I just not worthy enough? Please educate me as to my blunder!

Another thing I find strange given my dodgy track record and being a noob, is that not a single plate has contammed on me. Not even when a drop of soapy water from the ceiling of my SAB fell into one of the plates while doing transfers (never misting the ceiling of my SAB again, only sides from now on). I've shined a high powered flashlight under the plate and it all just looks like solid white healthy mycelium every time.

Looks good. Just be patient. It’ll grow out.

Does my growth seem slow to you? I've never felt like I've experience a spawn "run", but always merely a crawl. I am jealous when I read Paul Stamets saying a transfer will run across a plate in a week or two, I bet at this rate it would take 1 month to get a full plate. (slower if I do a few more transfers to clean the culture)

Transfer to plate on 1/21 (according to the image)

I have the plates in a styrofoam cooler tub with a glass jug of water w/ an aquarium heater inside. I've measured the heat inside the tub and even with the heater it barely gets much above 70.

I posted a few days ago about recipes, is it possible my recipe is bad or is this mostly just strain dependant?

Anyone every see a starfish like culture? I’ve got a few plates I inoculated with a MSS that have grown out in a starfish like pattern, symmetrical triangle shaped gaps. 2 examples shown below along with a very rhizo culture and a MSS plate where a colony is growing up and over another one that’s kinda cool.

2 g agar, 1.6 g light malt extract, 100 mL dH2O.
3 g potato flakes, 2 g agar powder, 1 g corn syrup, 1/2 cup dH2O.
6:9:400 BRF:Agar:dH2O by mass.

Nothing exotic.

Thanks for the heads up. You know what? I'm not even using telephone brand, I'm using Eden brand, not sure if that makes a difference. Didn't even consider that. Thank you for pointing out my potential oversight.

I bought my agar in bulk a long ass time ago, but if I use full strength to what most recipes show, my plates come out SUPER hard.  I've been, since noticing that, using 6.5g agar agar/400 mL H2O and much prefer it a little softer.  It still cuts and transfers as supposed to.  I just got some strong agar.  A lot of people who use "telephone" brand also find that it gels stronger than others.

:whathesaid:
I have Hoosier hill agar powder and had to adjust recipe to 6g per 500ml. Super strong stuff

I just started using Hoosier hill and I noticed it gets firmer than Telephone with same recipe as well.

Eden brand is great but way too expensive.  Hoosier Hills is good and the price is right.

Like others have said, try backing off the amount of agar agar powder. I prefer it as soft as possible and still able to make transfers. When I started doing that, I found I had a lot more visible contaminates, which would have been there all along.

Agreed. It's the only kind I can get OTC here from Whole Foods. Hence the price. Thanks for the advice I will adjust to make agar softer!

Still weird some companies call it agar agar powder instead of just agar.

Amazon just dropped a pound off yesterday. How does it do against telephone brand? Same amount, is it softer or harder?

Using Telephone brand, I'm down to 1.25% by weight for no-pour. With the amount of water I'm losing to evaporation it ends up being 1.34% by my calculation. (At the time I distribute the solution to each plate, before loading into the PCer. The water I'm losing is happening during the pre-cook/dissolving process.)

At 1.25%, it is still plenty firm enough to facilitate transfers, but I will be seeing exactly how low I can get it. I will try 1.2% as well as 1.15%. I tried 1.0% and it was definitely too soft.
