Who else restricts agar nutrition to develop wispier mycelium? I find it much easier to recognize anything suspicious.

I've been using GWA lately, (from WBS steep, will be testing oat boil water next), and I'm really digging it. I like to have some control plates from each batch and test how easy that particular batch contaminates. I usually don't even bother PCing them, just pour and expose it to open air maybe even touch it.

I've found that bacteria doesn't spread very fast on the GWA I've been using. I see some colonies here and there, but they have been staying small. Even molds aren't racing across it, I would say they have been colonizing at around the same speed as most mushroom species.

I don't know if that's due to limited nutrients, or if it has to do with using GW.

Thoughts, anyone?

Edit: So it turns out the GWA didn't treat me as well as I had thought. I think bacteria was hiding out but not expressing itself, because none of my spawn is clean, and I felt pretty confident about my SAB technique.

P.S. Anyone ever start an ugly agar plate thread? We could have an ugly agar party!

I would guess it is the limited nutrition slowing the mold. Pretty sure you will find your growth and morphology entirely change when you move to boiled grain water, depending on the concentration you use it at

but I dunno if that which you have been using up until now is something I would desire personally

growth that is too fast to be true is a good indicator of something fucky going on, and if everything is slowed to the same speed then the two become much harder to distinguish, for me and my shitty eye at least :shrug: agar with good nute strength, molds will charge ahead immediately and it is painfully obvious

I surely have some ugly plates around somewhere... :rockon:

Isn't that the theory behind water agar (using water, agar, and nothing else in a Petri dish)? Someone has some a few posts up, second post here:

Not really: WA seems to speed up myc growth, assumed it's looking for nutes. WA don't do you any good to outgrow molds - only bacteria

Some nice APE mycelium, very tomentose


quick question:


These 3 are from the same culture and still had good growth speed but they have a very slight yellow mycelium near the middle, do you think its a bit of bacterias so I shouldnt use these?

looks on par. Are you going to see this one through? Agaricus bisporus kicked my butt years back. I couldn't get the casing right as it needed Bacteria to trigger the pinning. Unless some one figured out a trick/hack!

Seems I went backwardsโ€ฆ. I am not sure if itโ€™s the agar or the myc?  T3 looked uniform and strong.  My goal is to get a clone for each of these back to agar and then make LC.

Whatโ€™s the best path for these - send any of these to grain, scrap any, transfer again?

It's quite common to grow from clone before making LC because you don't know how your clone culture will perform and if it'll have kept the attributes you originality were looking for until you grow it.

I havenโ€™t grown a shroom yet that has been worth cloning.  I am trying to keep my agar plates clean and take each to grain as many times as I have to in order to get a good clone candidate.  It seems T4 is showing signs that something was off in that transfer.

I am not sure if any of these can cleanly go to grainโ€ฆ

Anyone get tiny water spots on the surface of their agar sometimes? Like the size of a pinhead and completely invisible except when looked at the surface with a light. I canโ€™t even get a good pic.

Iโ€™ve never found them to be a contaminant and distilled water has cut down on seeing them for me. My other theory is that itโ€™s condensation dripping down from the lid and then drying on the surface.

Just wondering if others see this often?
