alright, first transfers ever seen to be doing OK for the most part. Bringing you a couple plates today that I'm curious if their behavior is indicative of contam or just myc being myc.

First up, Psilocybe Cyanescens T1. The halo. I see lots of pics of plates with a halo around the transfer, should a newb assume that to be normal/preferred, or is that indicative of the myc running from contamination at the transfer point? This plate has bacterial contam up top in the pic, I'm genuinely curious about the halo effect though.



Second, APE T1. The myc is uniform until the sector at 6:35ish, wondering if that indicates contam and the myc is running from it in that portion of the plate.



Planning on going to T2 with all my plates, but these are anomalies compared to their "sister" plates. Brother plates? Sibling plates? What are plates birthed during the same transfer session from the same parent plate? I digress.

Hope y'alls days have been good, and for the US bound, y'all didn't overeat in part of a gluttonous tradition.

Another question. How are y'all safely disposing of contaminated plates? I've come across this blog: https://tomy.amuzainc.com/blog/how-to-sterilize-and-dispose-plastic-agar-plates-and-petri-dishes/ multiple times, but I'm wondering if there are easier/more efficient methods of safely disposing contaminated plates.

What is standard procedure? Is the thought the landfill is already a wasteland, fuckit? or is there biohazard concern and treatment like anything medical related that we should be adopting?

Any contaminated dish just goes in my trash. Only contams germinating are those in the air already. Not like Iā€™m experimenting with some infectious diseases here.

Throwing away so many plastic petris always feels a little dirty, but there is no danger to the environment or anyone handling your trash other than the plastic waste or a spore load that is consistent with the air already.

Haha I feel that I need to get a pipe cutter for the roll. Iā€™m used to parafilm but itā€™s so expensive I said cling wrap it is. When I start doing t1s Iā€™ll have it a lot more neat and tidy. Just got a box of 500 Petris so Iā€™m going in.

A sharp knife will do just fine. And if you don't have a sharp knife, a bread knife will do just fine. And if you don't have a bread knife, a steak knife will work.. no more excuses

I stuck a roll of clingwrap inside a piece of 2 inch PVC pipe, and it fit snugly inside. After adjusting to the width I wanted to cut, I used the end of the pipe as a cutting guide, and used a box cutter with a fresh blade. It made a super clean cut, the best ones look commercially made!

Good advice. Iā€™m all for no excuses and I can own up to when I cut corners and this time I definitely did. Awhile back I tried to use a table saw for it and it was all serrated and caught every time I unrolled it. Iā€™ll cut it donā€™t worry.

Looks contammed still to me keep transferring those leading edges like you did. I wouldn't send that to grain yet.

Edit: Also take smaller wedges at that leading edge. Rice sized pieces if you can. The smaller the transfer the less chance of tag along contams.
