I think I'd wait for it to brown a bit more, but I only have a few shiitake grows under my belt. Does it have a bumpy sort of popcorn texture yet? (Mine usually get that before they really turn brown, but I can't make it out in your pic.)

It has gotten bumpy. It is just weird to keep letting them go as they change color and ooze.:horrified:

Growing these just for dog treats now.

She wants nothing to do with any other gourmets but these are like chihuahua crack. I just had to put a weight on the dehydrator because she figured out how to knock the lid off to get to them when I leave the room.

Sorry for the photo dump, I figured I had some catching up to do since I haven’t posted on this thread before (not sure why I’ve never checked it out before)

I am still very new to mycology, and mushrooms in general, and I’m not very knowledgeable. But I’m curious to know, when people upload videos and pics of their shrooms, like this image, is it obvious that they are cubes, (assuming there is no bruising apparent?) Or do mushrooms like these just look like any old little brown mushroom to most? Meaning, are people incriminating themselves by sharing this kind of content in countries where growing them is illegal? I’m wondering how guarded one should be.

They don't look like any mushroom (other than a vague resemblance to black poplar / pioppino) that one would eat for food. I wouldn't post a picture of cultivated cubensis that was easy to link back to my real-life identity.

Thank you for answering. I was watching a YT video and the guy was showing off his grows, and as I watched I couldn’t help but think “if he has any enemies that wanted to cause trouble for him, he just provided the incriminating evidence for them.” But then I thought, perhaps there are dozens of varieties that look like cubes? But I wouldn’t know, my mushroom knowledge is minuscule.

I believe Shroomery automatically removes metadata from pictures too, so there’s no way to find the time/location of the picture.

Really bumpy black pearl oysters. Are the caps trying to pin?

Mine do that sometimes. I'm not sure what's happening. Maybe unstable humidity or temps, maybe something up with the culture. Anyways I think it looks cool and doesn't affect quality other than looks.

After a better look, they are indeed, pins.

It's the most aggressive mycelium culture I have on agar or LC.

Nice! How long did you incubate before fruiting? Trying shiitake for the first time this year.

Been a while since I've shared anything. Some picture perfect Lion's Mane:

21 ounces of shiitake from a 5lb block. It will make a good dinner tonight.
