Update, I just plated some Melmac and PE, because why not. I've never grown PE and figured it was about time. Also I just got some germination on a plate of TOC, but it was one that I had swabbed 12/7/20, so not technically in 2021.

I have lift off on my rustywhyte plates. 5 days to germination is damn good.

Those complaining about plates showing no germination after 5 days. It is typical for spores to take 7-10 days to germinate. Depending on how old the print is, it could take even longer. I would suggest giving it atleast another 2 days.

Bear - that's solid advice. I'll quit complaining and try to be more patient lol. I have all the patience in the world waiting for grain to colonize but I apparently have very little with plates..

So not actually part of the LAGM grow but thought you all may enjoy.

I know I'm not the first and they sell ready made jars and lids and tubes for this. I in fact have those attachments somewhere;no clue where. So I threw this together to
A: serve my purpose
B: share the design\idea for others

In this instance I'm using a vacuum sealer but I have plans and will be making a diy vacuum pump in the near future I can share as well. So even withouy a vacuum sealer you can vacuum hydrate cakes (and other uses). Running some tests and weighing everything. I will eventually add this as part 3 of my Doing "science" series in my sig but here's a quick pic or two for now.



You can see at first the cake floats as it is full of air. In the second it has sank after two 10 second vacuum sessions with 30-60 seconds rest between. Fuck 24 hour soaks.  :woot:

I’ve got germination on my APE and Melmac, but only where I jammed the swab into the agar. My streaks haven’t taken off yet.

Some nice myc off the Melmac swab.


Just the tiniest bit of white on the dark background of spores on the APE swab.

Got some more germination action on the Tamps and now a tiny start on the PE. Also a contam next to the best germ so far on plate 102, but I think I'll wait for a transfer to see if I can get some more isolated germination from further down the loop streak. I am just happy to see any PE germination from a syringe that has been in the door of my beer fridge for a year.


EDIT: to say that I guess that Tamps are a really fast germinator and these are a fresh print, so they are probably not a fair comparison to Cubes. Waiting two weeks and more is not unheard of at all for cube spores to germinate.

Tossed both plates, there’s no saving that mess. Not sure if I will try again. Hindsight: Should have taken prints after I found them.


I have some new prints on the way, one of them will replace this grow.

A clean leading edge to help ensure a clean culture without hidden contaminants. Also select for myc vigor and health. I've had both tomentose and rhizomorphic mycelium fruit well so in my view there should not be a preference for either.

I'm still waiting to make sure I've got clean plates to put spores on. Just checked and saw that 20/34 are germinating mold. Whatever it is, its very wispy, has long strands and is very fast. I usually have a few that contam after pouring in the SAB but this is excessive as hell. The company I've been buying my plates from switched what they were selling. Usually, I get falcons that are high quality and come in a thick plastic sheet that you peel away when you open, similar to a syringe package. These new plates came in this...



Makes me wonder if they were even sterile to begin with. Even if they were, I doubt that thin ass plastic holds up very well while handling. These don't qualify because the myc was already on grain when entering this LAGM but here's some RW shoeboxes that are pinning and a RW unmodified tub that is still colonizing. (The coir in the tub is a lot darker then the picture shows. Not sure why but my phone wants it to appear light brown. I assure you, the coir is indeed at field capacity.)

Yeah the Baeos shot some nasty spores. No germ on the pans or maz yet. I have a shit show of a mess with a bunch of APEs, I think the LC I got is a bad culture, not the most reliable source. I have a different APE culture on grains from a swab from Roarkell, it’s just going slow. ‘Nocd up on Dec26 and there’s about a quarter sized growth area. I will be reaching out for advice once I spawn them.

APE can be pretty slow sometimes... I don't have much advice on speeding them up either... lol :shrug:

It takes months to narrow down a fast growth of ape.
Even then it's terribly slow. Especially with fruiting.

The seventh pic is the only PDA plate to harbor life... but that Fiji was a few days ahead of the rest so that may have something to do with it...
