How BrownBear Preps Bags * 2
    #27338273 - 06/07/21 02:07 AM (4 months, 19 days ago)

I am writing this tek because I want to show the community how I prep my bags in hopes that I can help those who are having problems with popped bags.

I began using this prep about 4 or 5 years ago when I was using two 23qt prestos. I now use a AA921. I have tried other methods that I have read about and the results always seem to be hit or miss. It is more than likely operator error and I am not putting down anyone elses method. I am simply posting this to show others what works for me and if followed to the "T" will give you the same great results that I have.

1) Make sure that you neatly fold the bag at the creases. Pinch the creases, working your way down the bag as you fold.

You will notice that I fold my bags with the filter patch facing in instead of out.

2) Once the bag is neatly folded, lay the flap flat and use your palms to press. Make sure that you press all the air that you possibly can out of the bag.

3) Take the lip of the bag and fold it over onto the bottom of the bag.

4) Now take your packaging tape dispenser and press it onto the lip on one end. I try and make sure that the lip sits at about half the width of the tape.

5) roll the tape from one end to the other while pressing firmly. Cut the end of the tape and press the ends flat, down the sides of the bag.

6) It should look like this.

7) I strategically place my bags into the pc. Three at the bottom and three at the top.

8) The three at the top are placed in the opposite direction than the bottom three.

9) The top three are placed in such a way as to not block the steam from being released by the rocker weight. If you look in the picture above where the little notch is on the lip of the pc, there is a pocket created by how the bags are placed. The picture below demonstrates where the rocker weight will sit relevant to the notch on the pc.

When I am ready to inoculate a bag I simply pull on the flap of one end to loosen the tape a bit. Then I pull the tape off from one end to the other. As I pull the tape I turn the bag so that when I am done the lip is facing the air flow.

This is my bag prep start to finish. I hope it helps atleast a few grower's out.

The tape dispenser does make it more convenient. Glad to see someone else uses this method. I guess it could be considered a pseudo pre sealed bag.

Just out of curiosity, why do you cover your regulator weight with foil?

It is foil tape and it is used to hold 2 quarters onto the weight. I was having difficulties getting the pc up to 15 psi. The 2 quarters solved that problem. Munchauzen is the one who suggested it.

Was it not hitting 15 at all or was it getting to 15 and the weight was constantly jiggling? My AA gets up to 15 easily but the weight jostles continuously, not 1 to 4 times a minute like it is supposed to.

Sorry for being off topic.

You're good. I have no problem discussing other topics. Yes. I could get up to 15 psi but the rocker would be goig nuts the whole time. I like that light hissing sound at 15 psi, where it rocks maybe 2-3 times a minute.

Have you noticed a decrease in water loss since you added the quarters? That is my main worry with the constant jiggling.

Yes. That was my concern also. I was losing like 2 out of the 2.5 quarts every run. I may have to add a half a quart of water in between 2.5 hour runs now with the 2 quarters added.

Damn, that's a lot of water. I'll give this a shot, thanks for the tip.

Thanks for this. My bags just came in and I decided to go with this method instead of the tyvek accordion fold method.

I ran 4 bags in the presto 23qt, each with 5 lbs of grain and ended up with no burst bags.

I have a question on how you inoculate and reseal the bag. After I open it and pour LC in, should I be re-folding and taping the bag, or somehow leaving some air in there as I have heard before? My current plan i guess is to let a little bit of air from the flow hood in and then fold the bag once above the filter and tape it back shut.

I'm glad to read that my method works for you. I use a 16" impulse sealer to seal my  bags after inoculation. I have seen a few folks around here use those plastic zipties to seal there bags also. I'm not sure how tight you can get those zipties by hand but they make a ziptie tool that can get them really tight.

I don't go out of my way to add any extra air before I seal them. When I use my impulse sealer to seal my bags, I pinch the center crease on both sides so that my bags are two layer so that I don't seal with any fold.

I’ll go with using an impulse sealer then, that seems like itd make sense at this stage. I just didn’t want to use one initially and have to inject inoculant somehow. If I get over it or feel like trying to reuse bags I’ll look into those PCable metal clamp/tie things.

IMO, the impulse sealer is the way to go.

Nice! how much are you putting in them bags? Also whats the liquid culture situation your using. How do you inoculate the bags? just open them up and squirt LC in?

Atm I am using rgs for spawn production. In my bulk bags I am using a 60/40 corncob/coir mix supplemented with 30% rice bran by dry weight. I am using 5 qts per bag. I should have some results to show in a couple weeks.

I don't use lc anymore. I am currently transitioning into those condiment cups for agar. I plan on dropping one plate per 3 qt spawn bag. Agar breaks up and mixes very well when used to inoculate bags. Where as with jars you have to cut wedges to drop in and wait for growth before shaking.

I actually just did a test where I transferred a hole punch sized of colonized agar into grain jars and shook 4 of 7 as soon as I dropped the agar in. Let me take pics real fast and show you what happened.

This is the one I shook

This is the one I left on its own.

This is the amount of agar I put in each jar. It hasn’t even been a week.
