Not close to the worst offender for killing Native Americans not by a margin of about 60 thousand people that were killed in the trail of tears spearheaded by Andrew Jackson in the Indian removal act of 1830 which was the largest mass executions of Native Americans. Systematic slaughter for land and resources period. To suggest Lincoln rose to that level seems ridiculous.

While the trail of tears was an absolute tragedy it’s technically not classified as an execution

I was using Lincoln as an example to contrast the good things he did

Jackson was a bad guy but he also dismantled the B.U.S. and helped establish state banks

Intelligence operations are effective to the extent that they are secret.  Once a target knows the methods by which intelligence is gathered, they can use countermeasures to avoid those methods.  By releasing millions of documents, any target or potential target can see what it is that intelligence agencies are doing and can often determine how they are doing it.  This is the same reason that police don't release information about active investigations. 

People who work in intelligence get security clearances for this very reason.  As a result, Snowden betrayed his vow and the trust granted him by the people by dumping millions of classified documents, when he could have narrowly tailored his disclosure. I'm certainly not in favor of the metadata collection that used to occur, but I'm also not in favor of giving away the whole store to fix one problem...particularly a problem that didn't result in anyone getting killed and can be fixed by deleting data from servers.

If Snowden had exposed a mass detention/extermination program, or some system in place to silence dissidents with novichok, it might be different. The greater the evil, the larger the sacrifice people are willing to make to confront it.  Here, though, we're talking about a program that was conducted with permission from the court wherein data that already was being collected and stored is copied to government servers for later analysis.  That simply cannot justify the release of millions of classified documents, most of which were about completely different things.

I concur with your assessment. A targeted release of material to expose a particular abuse of power would make him a legitimate anti-authoritarian activist and folk hero. A mass dump of millions of classified emails has every sign of an anarchist shit stirrer.

The link shows that the NSA surveillance exposed by Snowden was illegal.  I don't understand the game you're playing.  :shrug:

It doesn't show a crime, though.  Not paying a phone bill is illegal.  That's not a crime, either.  Snowden did not expose any crimes, but he sure as shit committed one.
