first time pouring agar (telephone+LME)

first run was a little bumpy... er... chunky... but poured some decent plates and learned a lot along the way, pumped to get something growing on these ^_^

s/o to everyone on here for the knowledge this place is incredible <3

What are you gonna put on those? I'm at the tail end of a spore print giveaway if you need something to put on those plates! Shoot me a pm if you're interested!

I've got some golden teacher LC en route and a probably filthy cambodian print from my first grow earlier this year

I'll slide you a PM

I'm still undecided on whether or not I want to use the towel. I didnt use a towel or a rack on the first set of plates I poured.

I cleaned the counter top with Iso and set 2 stacks of 10 plates side by side and only poured 8 plates starting with the third plate from the bottom and working my way up.

A rack seems to be pretty popular also, the towel has a bit-o-controversy.

The first set of plates I poured was with no towel or rack. I sprayed the some soapy water in the box, waited 30 seconds and cleaned the counter top and inside of the SAB with Iso. I made 2 stacks of 10 plates and poured 8 of them starting with the third plate from the bottom and working my way up. After 4 or 5 days 7 of those plates grew bacteria and or mold.

The second time I poured plates the process was exactly the same but I put a wet towel on the counter top and after 10 days only 1 out of 20 plates contaminated.

I haven't tried using a rack and theres not enough data points for me to even say that the towel method is better than just cleaning the counter top or table but the contaminatiom rate was low enough that I'll definitely keep doing it that way. If I start having more than a few plates contam, then I'll try out a rack. If nothing changes I'll re-evaluate my sterile tek.

I made a small batch of no-pour agar today, 6g agar, 5g dried potato flakes, 250ml water, a drop of karo, and some food colouring.

The potato flakes wouldn't totally disolve and so there is a layer of sediment in the bottom on my dishes. Is this normal and ok?

Ha! Well I'll get some LME and save these potato flakes for hiking! Can't beat a big jar full of instant mash made with cold water. Yummmm.

Yall should try slants, they're honestly very easy.. no harder than working with plates.  Hamloaf has a really simple write up on slants that works great

Hey everyone. I'm trying to decide if these plates are clean and good to go or not. There's some fluffiness on top of what otherwise is pretty rhizomorphic growth. I can't tell if the fluffiness is just the myc or if it's mold hitching a ride. I had hard time capturing it accurately with a camera but hopefully the pictures are good enough. Here are two different plates from the same batch. All of the plates from this batch have the same fluffiness to some degree. What do y'all think? The round spot on the first plate at around 4 or 5oclock is just an air bubble by the way.

I need some expert opinions on this plate... is it fluffy/tomentose mycelium in the center...or some sneaky, hitchiker mold???

Does look rather sketchy to me. I would take a transfer to try a hot pour and take that plate to a pint jar to test it

thanks for the tips y'all! I've read about the towel and am keeping that in the back of my head, I'm working in a room dedicated to this hobby on a brand new table so I'm starting with basics to see what works best. totally forgot to spray soapy water -_- I'll be happy if I get a few plates with no contams on my first run honestly, when I say I learned a lot I mean I definitely fudged some sterile tek steps
