Changing nutes can be good for identifying contaminants if you’re not sure how clean your culture is. People say that lowering nutes in general will tend to give more rhizo growth but it’s not a hard and fast rule.

Myc jumps between tomentose and rhizo for me, sometimes on the same plate. Just genetics I guess:shrug:

The same culture can be manipulated to go tomentose or rhizo.

I use lme and using really low nutes, like 4g per 500ml and then pouring the plates on the thin side will usually produce rhizo ime.

This is a tamp plate, I think it’s a mutated cap that grew.

I’ve noticed ever since I started using LME I don’t get nice rizo growth like I used to with the same amount of BRF. I may switch back to BRF because I’m on my second transfer and am mostly getting tom growth. Anyone here like BRF over other nutes?

What’s your ratios? 20g agar to 14g lme works great for me

D3monic, what brand agar do you use? I use telephone and it’s pretty fuckin solid at 14g/l. Or do you just prefer stiffer agar?

I just did my first warm pours at that ratio but I don’t know if it was too hard for the myc

I have an old agar dish that started to pin. My question is what's the best way to transfer that pin to a new dish?

In front of a fh or in a sab, the same way you do any other transfer.

I’m using 8g LME to 8g agar in just over 400ml of water. I used to use the same ratio with BRF and I’d get some great plates. They have some rhizo now on the second transfer but at first it was more tomentose.

To transfer plate pins I just stabbed them with the tip of the scalpel and they pop right off.

Is it really much of a difference in colonization Rhizo vs Tom mycelium? Also does rhizo perform better in fruiting too? I’ve always went after rhizo but is Tom just as good? I want to use these second transfer plates in my master jars but the myc isn’t as strong as I was getting on BRF. Let me know your opinions please  there’s some rhizo growth in them too, it’s kind of a mix between the two.

That seems to be a perpetual debate  I like rhizo growth too but tomentose looking cultures can perform just as well ime

Sorry, I didn’t specify. Those ratios are to 1000ml distilled water

from my understanding of rhizomorphic vs tomentose the rhizomorphic is going to be more sought after. The rhizomorphic growth is a different mycelial structure that is designed for long stretches searching for food, whereas tomentose is just trying to help it breathe.

I could be wrong though, this is shit I've read and i don't have any of my own work to submit as proof

I really don’t notice much difference between types of growth besides rhizo being slightly faster, but most of the time it all looks the same once it hits grain.

My very fastest cultures have been rhizo though all the way from the plate to running the coir.

Thanks for the info and different opinions on the two growths. I’ll try for rhizo but try the other too to see what I come up with. Will map it out and research more.

I was trying to clean up a moldy sample (more like an experiment than anything else..). That's a T6, mycelium (if it is mycelium in first place) looks weak. Still has some layer underneath it to... whatcha guys think? I want to learn so I appreciate your thoughts!

Yes, I am running low on plates

Managed to achieve my smallest transfer to date. Recovering nicely... hopefully without the bacterial halo this time.
