I'm in the middle of some agar adventures for the first time and trying to get this right. Ain't nobody got time cultivating bacteria and nasty mold.
So any insight on how this is going is much appreciated before I do my next transfers.
Also, what's those translucent areas, both in the middle and on the outside of the myc? Couldn't really find a straight answer, everything from bacteria, microscopic myc to it just happens.
And those black rings you can see when they're backlit, what causes this? Read somewhere it could be because of temp swings and light exposure?

10g LME
10g A
500ml Water

It looks like there some spooky stuff going on here and there but that I'm on the right road and the myc is looking better for each transfer. Or I'm just growing some bullshit here.

GT Spore plate, T2, T3.

So I went through my plate boxes, aalllllll the way back.

Some of them have jungles going on in there.

Kinda hard to see but a couple pins sprouted myc which is spreading on the lid.

This plate was made mid December, cling wrapped and just stored at room temp. The only ones that were ruined were either extremely thin or not wrapped well and the agar is all dry and curled up.

Can you just pop the tops and fruit them? Should I hold off on chucking my old dishes and just see if they fruit?

I’m experimenting with that now to see if they will get bigger fruits with just the agar nutrients. Put a few pucks in a showebox of moist sterile vermiculite to keep them from drying out. Still too early. Seen another guy do a mini version in a pasty plate, filled halfway with grains right on top the agar and then a little sub on top
Of that. Haven’t seen results yet.

If you leave them long enough they’ll pin wrapped up and everything.

Then you pluck it out and stick it on a new plate and have a nice clean clone.

Yeah, I had some plates lying in a closet for half a year. They were all dried up, but I don't think there was a plate that didn't fruit. Even contaminated and ugly ones all had fruits.

Yeast Malt Agar ok to use instead of Malt Agar or Potato Dextrose Agar?

YM has
Peptone
Yeast Extract
Malt Extract
Dextrose
Agar
Ph 6.2

You think there are any major differences in results between the 2? I know the yeast sent activated, so it won't magically grow yeast on the culture bed... just wondering if there were any known negatives to Yeast Malt Agar?

THanks

Nah man, a lot of older agar recipes on shroomery call for yeast. It's just that we're lazy fucks and it works without the yeast too, so most people don't do it.

Anyone else have piles of old plates waiting to be thrown out?

It seems I just keep rotating older plates to a stack in the back of my shelf, just waiting to throw them out. I dont like just chucking colonized plates in the trash, so I usually bury any clean pucks and flush contamed ones down the toilet before bagging the plates up and crushing them to bits. But its a hassle so I end up piling them up until the stack becomes unstable lol.

That's funny.

I was just contemplating what to do with the contaminated plates I want to get rid of.

Suppose I feel more comfortable doing what you just described rather than just hucking them in the garbage in tact and labeled...

My thought is to try to not throw anything in the trash that has any living culture on it. A trash guy probably wont know what it is anyways, if they even see it, but I dont like the idea of dropping that shit in the trash with old mail or whatever that could be traced back. Its not as bad as throwing fan leaves and stems from a pot plant, but it still sketches me out

Anyways, something out there loves to eat the old pucks. I bury them in some dirt and mulch on the corner of my house, and half the time when I go to check on it a few days later, theyre all dug up and gone. lol

Top shelf in pic active cultures, one below it ones I’m letting sit a few months to pin. Shelf below that not pictured are plates I need to get around to disposing of.

That’s an older pic, there’s a lot more now

I’ve got piles of old plates. Mostly either cultures I grew and then moved on from or early ms/clone plates just to keep the original genetics around.

I guess i should probably put all the plates in a bag and pc them into a gross plastic/agar ball. The trash can in my grow room is 90% Red Bull Cans and strips of cling wrap so I never really worried about the occasional moldy plate.

it makes sense to me either way.

but would you be in the least bit worried about the contents being identified?

Well I think if it came down to law enforcement digging through my garbage I’m probably fucked already lol.

Probably a good idea to toss the actual agar puck into the yard or flush it though.
