I see a pretty solid flush from that coir yeild! It could be better for sure.

Did you start with agar or go spores to grains? I'm assuming it's agar. I mean, an obvious way to get better flushes is to clone your fruits. That's a pretty easy step moving forward.

I think right now that your surface conditions during colonization look pretty great. Tiny little beads all over the myc that's poking up. So that looks good. Your surface looks pretty level, and based on the sides I can see you mixed things pretty well...

Which leaves me with genetics  That's all I can think of honestly. Your technique seems right on. Also, possibly I'm just going to say it could have been the environmental conditions too. I find that growing anything in August-ish (July-Sept) to end up with terrible results from high mold/pollen/temps.

But my guess is that you just need to clone it and do the same thing again. Your box looks great!  I am also curious about the end weight. I feel like you probably have around 250g wet, which ain't bad, honestly.

Thanks for the kind words! Good to know that you approve of the surface conditions. I actually started from a spore syringe with this batch, I’ll get a clone or two for the next one and see how that improves things

Yeah, that was my thought. Even if you'd started with agar it would have isolated the genetics a tiny bit so you'd have a more balanced flush. Good luck moving forward! I've had worse things happen to my shoeboxes because of Contamfest 2019 (aka August) lately

What was the dry/wet weight?

God i love this tek, it's become my main go to grow method

PE6 (MS to oats just cause) half quart (think thats 1 pint?) Of bacterial spawn to coir at a 1:1.5 ratio roughly sprayed the top layer down nice and good and bottom watered about a cup or so of water when the pinset came in

Yeah, you both are killing it. That knot-set is killer Cthulthu! Inspiring you two!

And yeah, I don't know if it's my tek or if it's just the coir in general (likely the coir), but when I use this method I can basically spawn as-bacterial-as-I-want spawn and get great first flushes. The reason I didn't realize my oats were having bacteria problems is because I was using this method, and when I switched I couldn't get anything to grow

I love it, honestly I'd probably still be doing oats to coir in Tupperware containers and fruiting in a SGFC

Also did some pans to using your tek, just waiting on pins now

I love it though, I know MS to grains sucks but I can knock up 6 jars while I'm waiting on cultures to grow out (I like to ALWAYS keep ALL my jars growing something at all times so I usually end up doing some MS to oats to fill in the extra jars while I wait on cultures) and even though they all stall from bacteria 90% percent of the time I can just scoop out the colonized bits and spawn them like normal and still get a couple fruits, granted it's not the best practice but helps fill that urge while I'm waiting on petris

Wet weight was 152 wet and 11 grams dry

I always thought Pans required more FAE than a shoebox could provide?

I thought pans... wait how are you using my tek for pan! I'm super curious, and want to also do this, so let me know.

Pans require pretty intense conditions to get them to want to grow. It's not so much fae exactly (that's more oysters), it's about temp, humidity and air cycling all working together.

Good point.  They require a more specific set of overall conditions compared to cubes, that's for sure!

I just added in horse manure with the coir and made the sub and casing layer about 1.5-2 inches thick, not sure how it'll do but we'll find out, I cased with some cactus mix (its peat, perlite, soil, and a few other miscellaneous things)

I left one of them uncased for a couple days but it wasnt forming water droplets on the myc so I cased it to

Although one box turned green on me so I guess my spawn could've used an extra transfer (I went back to the main petri and did a few more transfers, its only on T3 now so I wasnt expecting anything super spectacular although I gotta say I wasn't expecting trich before the first flush since it colonized semi quickly and such so I just assumed bacteria, I thought maybe manure prep at first but the other box hasn't turned green )

Sorry if this question has been asked before but does it matter if the lids aren't clear?

The white lids will work, but I have found the clear lid boxes to give much more favorable results. I am going to use only those from now on

So is it just 2:1:1 (eg 1qt Spawn, 1pt Coir, 1pt Hpoo) with a casing? I am very very interested in the results. Do you have access to Hpoo, or did you source it online?

I agree with ChardRich. It's not that they don't work, they're just not quite as good. I did side by side a while back, the main difference is that the time from spawn->harvest is a bit slower (was about 4-6 days slower), and the fruits weren't as... happy looking? They just didn't get as full/mature looking as the other box (was about 5%-10% less total weight). My guess is because of the lighting. I also only did this side by side using two boxes across three flushes in two different grows, so my tests were not extensive, and I decided very quickly it wasn't worth continuing.

With that said, they totally work, and this tek will still help with that style box. The difference is almost negligible.

It's like 4:1 hpoo to coir :rofl2: I ran out of coir part way through mixing

So near my house is some horse riding trails and alot of people in that area have there own pastures and such so I just followed the trail and picked up dung as i went

Hopefully it works out, my spawn wasn't nearly as clean as i thought but I still have a few plates growing out

Hi shaper, hi all shroomery brethren. I'm still alive fortunately. Been a bit since I've posted anything and figured I'd pop in and post finally. Need to get on the ball with becoming a supporter again.
I followed this tek to a T and made a bunch of shoeboxes.. a few sweaterboxes too.
I'm finally getting some pins even tho most of the tubs are slightly bacterial.
I've been struggling a bit with that still but I've been slowly chipping away at different possible vectors and I've almost completely eliminated the issue. This tek I think pulled me out of the weeds a bit in itself. It convinced me that I was still prepping my coir too wet even tho I didn't think I was and ever since I've had better results.
Missed y'all in my away time.

Hello! Can I substitute pure coir as substrate with pasteruzie cow/buffalo manure (+ coir) instead? Thanks!
