I followed your instruction, but I kinda fail in measuring the coir and hot water. The coir is quite wet, so I just squeeze out it's juice and dump it in the 6.5L of shoebox. After I mix them properly I top it up with coir and mist it up a bit. A few grains is peeking out though. Is it okay? Because I ran out of coir. It's like 3 or 5 grain is peeking out.

I think it worked pretty well, maybe added a tiny bit more water, but still no water squeezed out. Basically just enough water to rehydrate the coir and then a good misting on the top casing layer. It came out to be my best shoebox yet and i've started another 2 the same way.

It was exactly 2 weeks from mixing spawn to harvesting mushrooms. I soaked a day or 2 after harvest and it's working on the 2nd flush right now.

Heres some pictures, was fully colonized and nice pinset at 11 days.

Day 21 - 2nd flush - 87g wet
Probably should of dunked it right after the first flush, maybe some grey or cobweb type mold on harvested spots.
Still figuring out which pins are aborts and which will grow next flush.
Soaked it again, a small 3rd flush will put me over 1oz dry




My next new tub is on the same track pinning at day 10 but also a new strain (PE6)

About the quote, maybe I'm mistaken but it seems that the proportion 1qt to 100g coir is more than twice what you use?
Since 1qt is 1l then it would result as 5.5l for 550g coir?

Sorry I'm European and this whole thing of using imperial and metric in the same tek is making my brains fart...

I can easily buy 650g coir blocks in a local gardening store. If 550g here is used to start 5 shoeboxes, would it be ok to use that block to start 6?

This is why i have been just doubling the weight in grams (doesn't matter what measurement)  1 quart weighs 940grams... for 100g coir thats 9x seems way too much. I started at  coir weight x 2, but i'm going to work up from there. maybe x2.2 is a better starting point

Pretty sure i got 5 boxes out of 650 brick. each box required about 130g dry to have enough for 3 pint jars (2 to mix with spawn 1 for casing)

Hi, big idiot here, need a bit of help:blush:
When I want to make one shoebox, how much water on how much coir do I need? I’m getting a bit confused with the extra cup that’s used for pre heating the bucket (mathematics is so not my strong suit:crazy:)

Just fyi you posted on a super old dead thread. I'd pop over to the getting started category and post any further questions there.  No worries though.

One 650gr block of coir hydrates to around 6-7 quarts of coir. I use approx 3-3 1/2 quarts of water per brick.

So I'd say you need roughly 150grams of dry coir to get 2 quarts of hydrated coir. You would need to add a little less then 1 quart of water but I would start with about 3/4 quart of water. Then add more slowly to bring it up to field capacity. 

It doesn't have to be exact. You could use whatever ratio. Most people use a 1 to 2 ratio, spawn to sub with a little 1/4 inch top later.

I also pasteurize my coir in my instant pot just to kill any mold spores and to break it down a little to get it ready for my mushrooms.

You may have noticed I didn't reduce the standard amount by 8% yet, that's because 8% works out to be approx 1 cup which will be used to also pre-heat the cooler. Put the lid on the cooler, set a timer for 10 min, and turn the boiling water on the stove down to "LOW" (keep the lid on). If you don't turn down the water it will reduce too far and mess up your volumes.


You may wonder what happens to that extra cup we took out of the total water content for this prep, well that gets added back in the "top coat soak" section of the SFF Shoebox Assembly tek.

I am struggling to figure out where the third cup of water comes into pay from if both the extra cup of water as well as the less 8% gets used to preheat the container. please assist me. I apologize if it is clear and simple but i am just not understanding.
