Still a noob and need to perfect my surface conditions, but still is a great feeling seeing my first PEs coming out!

Nice! hell dont be discouraged at all, it just takes practice. Look at me for example I started growing when I first registered on here and i still have trouble with PE

Im curious if you find any difference between 1:1 and other ratios of spawn:sub?  I’d traditionally done 1:1 but RW has shown me that doesn’t always work...wondering about your mass of blobs and whether this might have been part of the reason?

I like to do 1:1.5 because some strains blob out when the ratio of nutes:sub are too high. I was doing 1:2 for a while becuase I thought I'd get more fruits, but that didn't happen. I don't like goin much lower than 1:2 as it just takes a lot longer to colonize w/o any significant benefit.

Lmao thats just cause I'm almost always on the shroomery :rofl2:

Edit - so turns out king oysters didn't do to well so I took the lids off and cased them with a thin layer of cactus mix and hopefully they fruit a little better (also is my first time running KO so that's definitely a factor)

But the shoebox tek works great on the small scale to! I took a tupperware container and spawned a half pint of ms WBS to 1.5 pints coir and it's gotten good results! (Ended up placing it in my SGFC cause I had to take the lid off since it wasnt that tall)

Has anyone tried this tek with larger monotubs yet? Im assuming it'd work out pretty similarly, but itd be interesting to see the results of that.

Been considering doing Pastywhyte's new Ez dialed monotubs, maybe ill try out incorporating this tek with them.

Give it a try and report back! I've run this same methodology with 32qt mini-monos with this technique incorporated with success, I basically use the same percentages and scale it up.

I tried it with a 54qt unmodded mono. Worked great.

Any unmodified mono is basically one big ass shoebox. It's all the same just different proportions.

KO shoebox update!

So your tek works great for KO to! Only had to modify it very slightly, the only difference is

- I ended up casing my sub (used a cactus soil mix)

- ended up leaving the lid off like you suggested (not enough FAE with the lid on)

As soon as I took the lid off the caps started filling out and a bunch of new pins popped up!

Killer! Is the sub coir below the cactus soil? I have some KO I may run soon, so this is good to know. Those pins are wild!

It is, I did agar to oats to coir and then cased with what I had on hand at the time

Im curious how the BE compares to doing bags though (like the sawdust bags) my other thought is just supplement the coir with the HWFP for wood lovers mabye

Actually just harvested those two big ones last night! Lmao, they ended up mabye 3-4 inches tall but the caps never got super big on those ones (think its cause they didn't have enough fae at first)

Hopefully in another day or two the smaller pins will be picture worthy

Are the stems the main part that gets eaten? I did notice alot more flavor in the stem compared to the cap but i figured it was my imagination

We're traveling very far off topic, but I'm here for this. Anyways, these are the cap sizes I'm used to seeing for them (not my pic):

Large is cool too, but I always assume those have super amazing conditions.

Oh dang! So the shoeboxes work pretty good for them if theyre getting bigger caps, I mean I got prints off a few of them

Back on topic though, the shoeboxes work good for KO! Just take off the lid and they're good to go pretty much (might not even have to case them)

Once I pick up some manure I'll see what pans do in them hopefully :snowman:

So I’m approaching the 4 week mark on some shoeboxes and I’m here to report some results, although I wish the results were a little more impressive. As far as bulk goes, I only have a couple small grows under my belt and I did some experimenting with this batch. I did 2 separate 6-quart tubs, 1 with all coir and 1 with a mix of coir and black kow (top layer all coir). I also made a couple smaller tubs that are probably only about 1-2 qts, just for the heck of it.

After spawning:

Colonization:

Coir tub a few days ago (will get weight soon):

Coir/BK tub as of today:

So the results haven’t been great, although I’m certainly not upset with them. They were multispore afterall and I’m still learning. The Black Kow addition seems to have slowed the colonization down so I’ll probably stick to pure coir from now on unless I see a significant yield difference. I was hoping that this new tek would get my pinset better on the surface, which has always been what’s prevented me from canopies. Will take suggestions and continue to work on it

--------------------
Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, “What road do I take?”

The cat asked, “Where do you want to go?”

“I don’t know,” Alice answered.

“Then,” said the cat, “it really doesn’t matter, does it?”

Nice results on that coir tub!

Surface conditions are definitely tricky to get the hang of, ive found that lightly tamping down the edges of the substrate can help prevent side pins if your having trouble

The key to full canopies is making your surface as level as possible and keeping up good surface conditions

Like everything it all just takes practice :snowman:
