Re: SFF Shoebox Assembly TEK [Re: Quinnn]

well you're right, i didn't read every word, i scanned the directions to see what directions he wrote and find the obvious flaws. I'm not gonna spend a lot of time reading every word of a questionable tek, inoculating grains with a syringe is a bad tek from the get-go. Good spawn goes hand in hand with any tub tek brother and i already said what i gotta say about whole rice being subpar.

Again, I bet you'll do much better this round with your wbs inoculated with agar. cheers.

How we looking? using brown rice spawn and the 5050 coir tek. Been 7 days and it looks like it's coming along nicely.

Really happy with this tek so far. My last grow was using the PF tek and it was so much god damn work, this seems way easier.

Looks a little dry and im not seeing any beads of moisture at all, I think a misting may be needed.

Just curious do those normally have lids on them that just got removed for the pic? I'm only asking due to the tubs looking dry

Don't grow off reddit, it's horrible. The tek as written you linked sucks. Whole rice is not brf cakes. Verm is a requirement for cakes and what makes cakes take a spore syringe better than straight grains. also half pints are highly reccomended for jar size because it's the best balance between speed and amount of spawn, pints and larger have a tendancy to slow down or start to contam before 100% colonized.

Stick to shroomery and you'll grow a million times better. Welcome.

/e late add, quart size grain jars usually take 2 per shoebox, so at most you'll have five. If you're making grains you should be doing agar. Syringe straight to grains sucks and fails often, even colonized jars are usually atleast a bit bacterial. This is also probably why you lost so many "cakes" from your reddit directions.

I don't think you read the link.

These are not brf cakes, they are bulk brown rice spawn, no verm. It's not that different from any other bulk tek except that it's doable without a pressure cooker (which I didn't have at the time).

You seem to be assuming a lot. I do agar work, in fact these rice jars were all inoculated from agar.

I didn't lose any cakes from my "reddit directions", firstly because I never lost anything to contam from reddit directions, but secondly because these aren't even cakes.

You can use less than a 2 quarts of spawn for a shoebox, I normally use 3/4 to 1.5ish quarts of spawn and then adjust amount of sub as necessary to maintain a 1:1.5 roughly spawn to sub ratio

2 months and not fully colonized means either

A) bacterial contamination

Or

B) bad grain prep (to wet/to dry/not sterilized for long enough/etc)

Couple tips for when your checking out new teks, if it mentions spores to grain being okay in anyway then it's usually a bad tek or atleast a very old tek that should be read over with some reserve if not completely discarded

@shaper - :rofl2: member those pan cyan boxes I had going? Turns out my plates had mold colonies hiding underneath the pan myc and that's why those tubs molded out on me

Really? I tend to see beads on the myc surface practically as soon as it breaks the surface of coir  I wonder if mabye mines a little to wet instead! :rofl2: that'd be pretty funny

Well hell I'm gonna hold off on making any final judgement then until we get a few more opinions I think

Perhaps it's the lighting to, the tub on the right looks dry to me but the lighting in the pic seems better on that side (on my screen atleast)

Ya wait for a few more to chime in definitely don't go off my word. I'm hella noob
I usually see small mist when it breaks through but not full on beads till it is fully colonized.

And true, light always fucks with pics... We need close ups Quinn!

They normally have lids, I took them off real quick for a pic. The kids and sides are all dripping with moisture, so I figured I was fine. I'll take close up pics after work today so we can judge. Sadly I'm using a spray bottle and not a misting thingy like in the OP, so it's slightly harder to get an even covering.

I did a 1:1.5 ratio as per the tek. Idk why everyone is assuming I used half quart jars lol. They were full quart jars.

It's almost certainly B, I didn't cook em for nearly long enough and the jars that have stalled look dry as hell. I don't really care though because it was more of an experiment than anything since I knew I'd be switching to WBS anyway. I have like 10 jars of WBS that are almost done, so I'll probably just toss the stalled rice jars.

I agree, however I had nothing much else to do with my time and jars until I could afford a big enough PC, so I tried it for the hell of it. People seem to get pretty decent results and so far my non-stalled jars seem to be thriving in the coir so I don't consider it a total wash.

Additionally, I inoculated mine from agar, not from a syringe.

I take everything from Reddit with a massive grain of salt. It's kind of useless compared to shroomery, but I've seen some interesting stuff. A bit ago, someone successfully inoculated cans of corn lol.

I figured they had lids but wanted to double check hahaha

Hell I also use a regular spray bottle (the cheap little 2 dollar ones) if you spray it from up above and let the water gradually fall onto the sub it helps get a little bit better coverage sometimes

After first flush do you just set and forget after the soak again or do you fan/mist daily ?

Mist when needed after the first flush to keep those surface conditions on point

I can't seem to see the beads of water on the sub no matter how much I mist after the first flush I mist and the sub looks damp then after 6hrs or so it looks dry so i mist it to look damp. The only time I get the beads of water is before my first flush

my last few shoeboxes using this tek I have put another top layer for the second flush. I use bone dry coir to make an ultra thin top layer (I dusted it on) then spray it with water. Second flushes came with 1 or 2 days.

The myc did not waste any time colonizing this second top layer btw.

As requested, here are some closeups

Definitely no beading on the substrate itself I see some on the mycellium though. Thoughts?

Also, since I followed Damion5050's coir tek, there is some verm in there, maybe that's contributing?

pretty sure the substrate won’t bead up because it absorbs water. It will bead up on the myc tho.

Not sure how important the surface conditions are after fruiting is already going. I always thought proper surface conditions were to get pinning and then shrooms...??

These look good too. Stoked to see your pin set.

I always just give a good spray after dunking and a few days latter if it looks to dry give it a small squirt. it does bead up on the mycelium just doesn't poo.

I just assumed you need evaporation to induce the second flushes pin set? maybe a TC can help us out and set the record straight.

I wonder, should I see mycellium take over the entire surface before I start to see pins?

The pics in the OP show pins that appear to come out of the substrate itself, and no thick covering of mycellium like I am quickly getting.

If you put the top layer on at spawn and its not too thick the mycelium will take over and fully colonize before you see pins.

Looks likes your like 4-5 days away from pins if I had to guess.

Let's hope you're right!

I have a ton of jars in my closet that are getting very close to spawnable. I'm trying to decide if I should do this (and have like 10 god damn shoeboxes lol), or go with an unmodded / mono tub instead. Kind of torn tbh, these seem so low maintenance and I like the fact that if one of them contams I don't loose the whole thing.

Update: we got pins!

Sadly lost one tub to trich. At least I think it's trich. Light green patch right ontop of the area that had started pinning. Had to toss it :c

These other two bins are looking pretty alright, these pins are looking a bit blobby though, anything I should do or should I just leave them alone?
