Dung will rip open any holes you didnt seal in your contamination armour, if you're new just stick with coir, it's great. Maybe peat if u neeeeeeeeed the nutes but most cubes dont. The grain is the nutritious part of a bulk substrate.

1qt RW to 2qt coir.  Ended up 388g wet!

Where do you guys find the shoeboxes with clear lids?  I can only find the opaque white lidded ones at target but they’re super cheap.

Alright, thanks. I'm new-ish but not totally new. I'm just finished with my first harvest. Fool around with the bulk substrate and it caught with cobweb and smell funky, will burry it soon.

I used cow/buffalo manure mix with coir and it was pretty good. The issue was massive side/bottom pin thus I would like to try this tek. But yeah, I'm loaded up with the current substrate i'm using hence I asked to make sure it can be substitute, and it seem most consensus is coir. Will do, thanks guys.

PS. Can anyone elaborate the reason of massive side/bottom pins or how to prevent it? I used a black liner and it doesn't really help. The substrate shrink regardless. It seems to create its own microclimate from evaporation. Maybe I shouldnt have use a humidifier (because it kinda make EVERYWHERE in the tub moist and wet), and just use a sprayer to control the moist to be only at the surface as per this tek.

Poor surface conditions. Probably too wet. Just use 100% coir and follow Sharper's coir prep tek.

It was most likely too wet but also tamping the edges, like more than you think you shoul, eliminates sidepins as long as you have good air currents. Classic mono hole configuration usually achieves this :shrug: I’d prep just under capacity and smash those edges in. I’d bet the small mound would be the prime fruiting spot as long as your hole configuration or whatever is on point.

It was a shoebox very similar to this tek. I guess I make it too wet at some point, then it become too dry at some point. Substrate shrinking causes the edge to be a prime location :/. Thanks =)

Ok guys, another question. Sorry if I'm double posting. Its regarding measurement of coir.

So I have one small size fully colonize spawn left that I just took out of a fridge. The weight of the spawn is about 270g. I've read the this tek and it says 550g of coir for 5 box. This mean about 110g is use per box.

Now, I'm abit confuse since the recommend ratio is 1:1.5. I'm not sure which measurement to go for. Should I go for 110g and ignore whatever my spawn weight is? Or should the coir weight be 405g per box(270g + 135g which is 1:1.5 - I'm super bad at math so please correct me)?

You have 1 quart spawn?

I did the math a while back for one box.

It's 110g coir mixed with 1.9 cups water.

Pre heat the cooler/bucket with 2 cups first, wait 10 min and then dump it. Add 110g coir with 1.9 cups boiling water.

Well, I've google and 1 quart = 946.352946 grams. My spawn is like 1/4th of that, which is about 270 grams. Does this mean I have to use less than 110g coir?

Why do you have such a random amount of spawn?

Just divide 1.9 and 110 by 4.

Not my thread but you dont even need to rotate them. IT would probably be a good idea to put whichever fruits on top, closest to the light, but you'd probably have just as good results if you didnt do that. Just stack em and leave em be.

I stack mine 3 high in this setup.  I've done 4 high before - they just get wobbly.  I've had fine grows without having to move any higher/lower.

The only downside to stacking is if the mushrooms get bigger than the distance between the sub and the lid.  I dub-tub in those situations which means that shoebox has to go on top.  Or a different shelf.

Shaper,

I always had bad luck on fruiting second flush even with your tek. After the first flush I harvested and soaked for 3 hours. I had some bone dry coir laying around and I was able to sprinkle super thin top layer and misted it heavily. It really helped me out! I heard the myc will just colonize it and waste energy on that but it didn’t really colonize it. The second flush happened right away.

Have you messed around with that at all? Would you recommend or is it just whatever works?
