Fixing a waaay too dry shoebox? * 2

First time mushroom rancher here.

I'm right at a month from starting a Golden Teacher shoebox grow using Shaperdreaming's evolution of mushboy's Shoebox Tek. Spores to oats, then to the box and mixed with sub-field capacity coco coir followed by a hydrated coir top/pseudo-casing layer on 9/8. I've kept the (loose fitting) lid on and always had condensation on the lid and sides.

I'm currently on day 5 of fruiting and though I've got condensation, my substrate/cake seems VERY dry. Attached is a picture demonstrating a good half inch of retraction all the way around, and all the way to the bottom of the box, and it just seems crispy.

Is this too dry? Reading through grow reports for the tek it seems most people just let it be until harvest, but this just seems tooo dry. But then again, what do I know!?!?

Is this a situation where it would be appropriate to add a quarter or half cup of water and try to rehydrate in the middle of the flush (I've got pretty varied growth-one fruit split the veil today but I'm probably looking at another several days until the majority are mature)? If so, how long do I let it sit? I've read everything from dumping excess after 4 hours so as not to "drown the mycellium," to letting it sit for up to 24 hours as you would a dunk (which seems like a safe length of time to NOT drown the mycellium).

Or should I just let it be?

I appreciate any guidance. I'll have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised that I haven't otherwise had any nasty surprises with my first grow... although I anticipated some, so I was triply redundant with all of my steps and now I have 6 other shoeboxes that are pinning :rolleyes:

So you have a ton of mushrooms which is awesome!

And it looks like theyre big which is why the substrate retracted from the sides

Youve got a few options so pick the one that fits your style

You can:

1)do as you suggested and bottom water which means to pour water around the edges so the sub can soak it up and drain the excess after 1-24 hours

2)wait to submerge your sub in water until after your harvest and drain after 1-24 hours

3)do the floating lotus tek. The floating lotus tek means to put enough water in the tub to make the substrate float and refill it when it gets low

The OG Cultivator Eats does this for water hungry species...



When i first started reading your post I thought you wouldnt have any fruits by the tone of your intro but it looks like you got a fuck ton which means you're doing great

A lot of mushrooms on small substrates do benefit from a bit of bottom watering in my experience.

Thanks so much for the advice! I'm bottom watering them today to see if it makes a difference.

It had just bothered me because a lot of people swear by the hands-off approach, but this seemed a bit more than what I've read to be normal. It really helped to have an experienced set of eyes chime in!

And yep, I'm very happy that I have some mushrooms. My box is a bit odd, though- I was very thorough with my S2B and made sure it was homogenous, and the surface colonized uniformly... but the pins/fruit has been almost like there were three distinct zones, with one outer third pinning all at once (and now mature fruiting), then the middle third all at once a couple days later (now immature fruit), and then the other third a couple days after that (just beyond pin stage). It was just really odd that the difference in growth wasn't dispersed randomly.

Oh well. I've got a lot to learn, and am certainly enjoying myself!

Well you are coming from spores- straight to grains no less!- so you have a million strains growing at the same time. Normal to get an uneven pinset. You got a bit lucky with the spores, and the flush looks great.
