Thanks. I have trouble with some however. When I lived at Topaz in FNQld the dairy farmer had these friesian cows with a strange name with numbers in it.

When I was a little kid in the early 1960's my uncle had dairy cattle. There was this bull paddock with a jersey bull in it. Anyway we'd stay away because my aunty would have a fit if we went in there. They'd all panic if the bull got out. I ended up having nightmares about that bull.

Think its in my blood to hunt mushrooms. My dad would put me on his shoulders and go next door to my uncles place and pick field mushrooms. My brother who is 5 years older than me said goldtops got put in the hessian bag along with the field mushrooms.


None of the kids would eat them. My brother said they'

My brother said my mum dad aunty and uncle would be giggling away with red faces from carrying on. So its in me blood I reckon. Maybe I was conceived on a mushroom trip. Born Jan 7. They'd always be up there at easter. Possible??

Used to subscribe to TAMS. Museum society magazine. In the 1970's they had a feature on hallucinogenic fungi. They said first case of goldtop ingestion was in the 1950's at a chinese restuarant in Ballina nsw.

From what I can gather people have been eating them under a different name for much longer. They were called cow mushrooms to differentiate them from field mushrooms. My aunty would joke about them in the 1960's. It would go over my head and I'd be thinking about laughing cows.

During that time my dad would show me the spot where he used to pick mushroms carrying me.
It was a lush patch at the bottom of a steep gully. All the hills there were devoid of trees except for patches of lantana.

In the 1970's I wanted to hunt field mushrooms there. My aunty explained that if I pick those cow mushrooms they'll make me laugh and laugh. It wasnt until 1982 from memory I found a cow mushroom or goldtop. It had the characteristic gold cap. After that I started picking field mushrooms with different coloured gills. They looked more lavender than pink. Get them home and the blue staining was evident on the stem.

Hard to tell from a field mushroom at first.Anyway back to my point. My brother was telling me a certain politician in Darwin would go on forays eating goldtops a very long time ago. His daughter was dating my brother for about 10 years.

All hearsay? It doesnt matter but those pale goldtops have probably been mixed in with field mushrooms since cattle introduced them to this country.

Found some frosted subs today. Looks like its getting too cold for them. If we get rain in August those dark capped ones can come up in leaf litter in August. Birds scratched out the few tasmaniana that fruited after the rain. Alutacea seem to be the main thing going now. Oh well I'll have to wait for better pickings.

Haha unfortunately you were not the closest as it was roughly 40 dried grams. Perhaps a participation prize is merited! :grin:

When is peak season for cubensis Heyowana? I'll most probably be leaving Australia and head back to Europe around December ( :thumbdown: ), so am hoping that there may be species to look for after Subs season is over.

Cubensis around Sydney? Think you'd be lucky to find them before December. It's more rainfall related than temps. Spring is the driest time of the year there. Storm rainfall in November could get meanies to fruit late November. Goldtops will need a fair bit of rain to get them fruiting  down there. Usually Feb- April you get good rainfall. January can be dry but if its wet fine.

In the meantime subs fruit in the lowlands right through until August if it keeps raining. Those July/ August westerly winds will curtail the season with dry weather. Panaeolus cinctulus? Maybe their DNA says otherwise but they have a zone layer on the cap and mottled gills. They can occur in spring- summer in lush paddocks, straw mulch or parks in wet areas of lawn.

P.alutacea fruits anytime of the year after good rainfall. Just need some horse manure to check out. Its pretty easy to ID them from Deconica species which tend to have a shorter stem and a drier cap. Also alutacea will show some bluing ususlly at the bottom of the stem if you give them a gentle squeeze then leave them in a bag or container for a couple of hours.

Thought of a few more names for meanies. AKA copes AKA blue moons. Blue moons was a descriptive name. Get the harvest back home and lay them out. The caps on mature specimens would look the image of the full moon blue tinged.

They acquired the name meanies in this country due to their effects. At high dosages they become mean and coercive. One could say even hellish. They need to be experienced like that to understand why the name.

After that the name becomes embedded in ones mind forever I think. They are more for younger people who want to get their mind blasted like no other mushroom can do from my experience. I spent close to a decade worshipping them.

Not anymore. I learned my lesson. Its hard to say what the threshold is between a pleasant trip and a hellish one on meanies. Everyone who tries has a different threshold dosage. I remember a friend I gave a decent dosage to. He shared them with another friend. He ended up in hospital. His paranoia was such that he thought hospital was the best place to escape his friend.. He was convinced his friend was going to kill him.

Same guy had a crappy time on Sydney subs as well. Mushrooms werent for him I'd have to say. Another friend we mixed hash cookies with meanies. He ended up getting the doctor. I tried to talk him through it but he was convinced his time was up. In his mind.

Shared meanie stew with two others one day. 140 meanies from St Albans. One got sick. The other left returning home 6 hours later. He told me if he had a gun he would have shot me. Go figure?

The meanie trip comes on very fast and only lasts about four hours. Seems a lot longer though.

Geez Heyowana,

By the sounds of those last few posts, I might steer clear of the blue meanies. Sounds way too hectic for me.On the subject of mushrooms and potency, what is the most potent active mushroom out there? and where do blue meanies and subs sit on the spectrum?

Newcastle still flushing nicely. Found a new patch today, but I think I missed it by a few days. They were all ok, but I just love seeing them in their prime. Ended up with 600g fresh.

My understanding is that subs are one of the most potent mushrooms you can have. Cyans I believe are on par with subs. I think the most potent strain is cubensis White Albino?? Correct me if i'm wrong

Also how did White Albino's come about? I've heard amazing things about them

Psilocybe Azurescens is the most potent, which are almost genetically identical to Psilocybe Subaeruginosa. The difference in potency between subs and azuescens is minute if not null. Subs are basically the most potent species in the world.

Hi Shags19. Good to see you around. I'd like to apologise for my shit attitude towards you earlier on in the season. At times I act like a self important fool. Then feel regrets later on.

In my experience potency should be assesed by dry or wet weight. Meanies are probably the most potent when fresh. Dried they arent much. They are very high in psilocin. Subs at their best are right up there wet or dry.

Papuana weight for weight are very potent when fresh. Dried they are prety ho hum and boring.
Tasmaniana fresh are on a par with the mountain subs around here. I was surprised how good P.sect. Zapotecorum was dry at 5g. Fresh they would be superb I think at higher dosages.

Cubensis wild very boring. I've eaten large quantities. Ones that other people say are potent. They just dont get me to the places other species can.

People tell me some of the cultivated strains are potent. Maybe they are. It depends what species those people have tried to compare them with. Weight for weight I find cubensis to be of low potency.

I'm a big fan of anecdotal accounts when it comes to potency of mushrooms. Potency can vary to a large degree within a species. Stamets claimed P.semilanceata to be the world's most potent mushroom tested. Even though azurescens was at the top.

His reasons were interesting. How semilanceata converts the tryptamines in grass into psilocybin.  Guess its an easier path than rotting wood as in the case with wood lovers.

Weight for weight the P.semilanceata lookalikes I found at Topaz were extremely potent. To the degree that the goldtops and meanies there were very weak. I think they were though. I found goldtops and meanies I picked in nsw and central Qld stronger.

What got me is I could smell those semilanceata from two feet away. Strong smell of fresh lucerne hay. I'd never tasted a mushroom with such a sweet sugary taste. I dont know if that is a general characteristic with semilanceata. Yet the mushrooms I were finding were coming up in lines across the hills at the edge of couchgrass. Also in lines back into it To the point where the grass would look sick after they fruited.Very easy to find hundreds in a small area.

Anyway I dont own Stamet's book Psilocybin mushrooms of the world anymore. Thanks to Qld police taking all my mushroom books. I think it said P.semilanceata could get as high as 3% psilocybin but I may be incorrect.

Back on 1st April 2014 I started a thread called Liberty cap allies fruiting in Australia in Summer. First post I wanted to know what effects people have on liberty caps and what they tasted like. I  also talked about the two species I had found that I considered liberty cap allies.

I have asked that question about liberty caps on various threads in this forum over the years. The only answer I have been given was from knarkkorven who told me they taste farinaceous. Which means like flour I think.

At least on facebook after a movie called Hunting liberty caps in Wales people told me about their effects in a lot more detail than here.

Sure if I asked that question enough here I'd probably be told to ask it in the psychedelic thread. Personally I believe people like to have their head in the sand when it comes to anything new that might challenge their outdated opinions.

A member from a different website called those people flat earthers. I like that phrase. It has a medieval ring to it.

This is my first season & experience at hunting in NSW, being from Melbourne I am mainly familiar with subs.
Have found various gold top varieties so far whilst here in Sydney but am unsure about the way some of them have been colouring into more of a violet purple type colour and not the much darker blackish blue that I'm used to seeing.

If anyone could advise me on this query it would be most appreciated. (can't upload pics atm. Site is telling me low memory)

If the caps have a violet hue with a bit of gold in the center that's fine. If there is no blue/ blue green staining where the flesh is bruised you might have an inactive species.

Check the veil on the stem. If it's there. Goldtops it will look like a collar hanging down. Stropharia rugusoannulata sorry if my spelling is incorrect will have a toothed collar around the stem.
