No sweat Heyowana,

I think I was being some what of a pest at the beginning of the season. I was super keen and trying to get as much information as I possibly could. Your advice definitely helped  me to look in the right places and have a banger of a first season. I’ve found shitloads of subaeruginosa around Newcastle and surrounds, and hopefully there is still another flush or two left in the season. So thank you

Having been a migraine sufferer most of my adult life. I started experimenting using mushrooms to treat them in the 1980's. Meanies- Copelandia cyanescens I found to be the quickest acting to stop the migraine in its tracks.

Fast forward to more recent times P.papuana had a almost instant effect on the migraine. Both mentioned species are high in psilocin I believe. When dried they act just like other psilocybin mushrooms taking 20-30 minutes to kick in.

The question is how to preserve those two species in their fresh state. One way I tried was the meanies in honey mixture. Unfortunately over time the mixture degrades and turns into ethanol. Maye Stamets way of putting them in a blender with water and then freezing the resulting mixture in ice cube trays could work.

The migraine sufferer then places the icecube in a drink or straight in their mouth at the onset of a migraines symptoms.

What do you guys look for when trying to find a spot to hunt? The only spot where I have found stuff I found by luck. I have been to a few parks with woodchipped beds and fallen debris, but I haven't found anything. Am I missing something? Do they need water nearby or the right altitude or a certain type of tree?

Hey guys, curious what's the lowest altitude you have found mushrooms in Sydney? Currently finding them around the 90-120m altitude.
So I am thinking 100m+ is the go, but could be so wrong. Let me know

Umm very...

0.75m ASV and with 100m of salt water.

Geez Heyowana,

By the sounds of those last few posts, I might steer clear of the blue meanies. Sounds way too hectic for me.On the subject of mushrooms and potency, what is the most potent active mushroom out there? and where do blue meanies and subs sit on the spectrum?

Newcastle still flushing nicely. Found a new patch today, but I think I missed it by a few days. They were all ok, but I just love seeing them in their prime. Ended up with 600g fresh.

Happy Hunting

Great find Brother Hunters!
Any idea when the irrigation pipes are on??

The nicknames can confuse at times. A local was telling me about blue meanies in Cathedral rock national park in April! Its up past Ebor on the way to Armidale. Snow country. Of course he means P.subaeruginosa. Maybe he tried a few too many and encountered their darker side. Ha ha ha.

A friend from Canberra called them golden tops. Up in the mountain ranges. Melbourne guy who lived in Sydney picked goldtops down there. Both picking P.subaeruginosa. So I'm probably adding to the confusion.

Best to just call them - Psilocybe subaeruginosa. Genus name always starts with a capital letter. Which can be abbreviated to P with a full stop after it. So P.subaeruginosa. Species name always starts with a lowercase letter which gets abbreviated on this forum to subs.

P.cubensis - cubes, Panaeolus cyanescens - Pan.cyans or Copes for Copelandia cyanescens. I found the nickname blue moons for them evocative. It probably belongs back in the 1970's when newspapers in this country were calling them that.

Please Gods of the skies give us some rain  :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

Went for a hunt today, looked at usual patches and found absolutely nothing. I did come across some fungi managing to grow despite the dry conditions which gave me a little bit of hope. However looking at the weather it's going to be dry as for the foreseeable future :frown:

Yeah AzzA,

Only photo I could get. The boys were getting to excited and snipping the other patches before I could get a photo. There’s another 4 patches similar in size to this in this park. Had walked past this exact spot on precious occasions and seen nothing, so hoping it is the first flush for this patch. The other patches are the earlier photos I took of that little cluster of the wavy cappped subs. They have flushed a few times already this season.
As for how often it gets watered, not sure mate. Bring on the rain gods. These strong winds as of late are drying the place up

P.alutacea - 2016 W of Coffs Harbour.
P.papuana - 2016 W of Coffs Harbour.
P.undescribed 2016 W of Coffs Harbour.

Perhaps widespread for what little I know.

Firstly I apologise for the months long bump of this. But going through this thread the other day I noticed that you've noted that you've found pscilocybe cyanescens which I understand are almost exclusive to the northern hemisphere. Would you be able to shed any light on this please Heyowana?

Originally I called them "meltdown mushrooms" because of their effect. I wouldn't be too hasty to say cyanescens is exclusive to the northern hemisphere. Generally probably but I dont know.

They grew near a garden with azaleas and rhododendrons. The gills were less crowded than subaeruginosa and the cap would detach easily. The stems were thick like a boletus sp. Along the stem the bluing was on every raised surface. Making them look like blue tree trunks. They only grew up to 50 meters max down the creek from this garden.

At a loss of what to call them I picked P.cyanescens to differentiate them from P.subaeruginosa. Another species that looks a bit like them is P.cyanofibrillosa. They may be an undescribed species. I seem to have a knack for finding unusual species.

The effect was not like subaeruginosa. Wait one hour approximately. I would feel nothing. Then I'd see like a serpent like wave of energy in front of my eyes. Going from the bottom of my vision to the top. I'd be instantly out of it melting into the ground. First my legs would collapse. Then while I'm lying on the ground feeling like I'm in an elevator going down floors into the ground.
My eyes would close and my jaw would not open. So I'd be stuck on the ground where ever it happened for hours.

At first I mixed these mushrooms with subaeruginosa. Bad idea. I'd get out of it on the subs then the meltdown mushrooms would hit an hour in.

In truth I dont know what they were. Even dried they had a sweet taste. Bit unusual from my experience. I threw that many specimens away after bad trips on them. That's not like me. Haha.

On relection I'll say this. I'm not a mycologist or a scientist. I know very little. This was proven to me on a thread about an unidentified Psilicybe sp. found near Capetown in South Africa.

Alan Rockefeller and Inski ID them as P.cyanescens. I argued a bit passionately that they were subaeruginosa. My reasons were Capetown 34 degrees S. Same as Sydney where I used to hunt subs in Beecroft. The introduction of eucalypts from Australia to Mt Hyland not that far away from Capetown.

Anyway after DNA sequencing Alan Rockefeller said Psilicybe cyanescens. New Zealand there have been reports of P.cyanescens. So I guess mushrooms arent as concerned as some of us about whether they grow N or S of the equator.

Conditions are more likely to be the governing factor. Not some arbitrary thing like Northern or
Southern latitudes.

After considerable thought for my somewhat deficient thought processes I'll make one more post on this subject. Then go and crawl back under my rock.

I found those P.cyanescens? in greater numbers close to the garden I mentioned. I'd see people in their garden there and go no further. About 20 meters down the hill was the creek.Fruiting down there under the thick lantana and isolated eucalypts were this species and subaeruginosa.

I only found this species fruiting on the lantana wood and leaves decomposing underneath. Subs were there too and looked nothing like them. Anyway about 30 meters down the creek were some flat rocks with little vegetation around them. I never could find any past there. Plenty of subs under lantana. In wandering jew and under eucalypts.

I found the P.cyanescens in wandering jew where the lantana was. I don't think I ever found them attached to any hardwood sticks. Unlike subs. It was just softwood decomposing stuff from the lantana underneath it and caught up in the wandering jew.

To conclude maybe they weren't cyanescens. They werent subs. They a distinctive species though.

Thanks for asking about those mushrooms I called P.cyanescens. I've pondered on it a bit today. Something else I'd never considered until today. I've posted years ago that they would only fruit for a month.

They'd be there beginning of the season - end of April/ early May. Then by June I'd be finding nearly all subs. So I thought why? Maybe they didn't like the cold. Sydney can have quite mild weather until end of May. Then it gets cold.

I also dont remember seeing the undulating cap. A characteristic on mature subs I found down there and cyanescens. Maybe they were a more tropical species somehow introduced to the area.
