Since my breakthrough finding a patch that yielded around six grams, (not a tonne but good for a first find) I have found three single subs just growing by the side of the road within a km of my house. Is it unusual to have solitary ones popping up?

We have had some good rain over the last few days so I will check out the places where they popped up.

Nah a few sometimes pop up 100m away from my Hunting mates house.

So it has been raining up here in the Mountains for a couple of days solid.

How long after it starts raining is the best time for foraging? Is it better after it has been sunny for a while?

Bloody hell, how much does each seperate mushroom weigh!! :mushroom2:

If your not finding subs in these conditions in Sydney you're looking in the wrong places. I'm finding a serious abundance of mushrooms everywhere.
My mega patch has yielded a whole new array of mushrooms but unlike last time, which in the moment of excitement picked all mushrooms.
I'll wait for them to mature and get their wave, i'm estimating 250-300g. Been a great year so far.
I either didn't dry them well or my specific patch doesn't seem to be as intense as described when relating BM and Sydney mushrooms potency.
Then again I didn't grind this batch up (which i will do soon) and I only had a .4 dose. Will make a better judgement call when I jump on a solo 2-3g. Yewwww SYDNEY BABY

Wet to dry weight Estimation is divide by 9  or 10,  11 if highly water logged for P.Subz. (P.Cubensis and some others)
Dry Weight;

Found a few nice specimens today. Usual patches not really fruiting, but came across a few solitary subs.

Every time I attempt to take a candid picture of a sub, there's always a delay after taking the picture and so usually out of focus. When I take pics of other fungi in the region, they all come out great! Strange...

After the recent rainfall event dropping 26mm in my neck of the woods I had a hunt for alutacea in some brumby paddocks. Plenty there coming up in troops.

I mention this because they are fruiting out in the middle of the paddock away from trees. Some big specimens as well on the horse manure. So get out there and have a look Azza if you know of any horse paddocks.

I ate quite a few specimens. Not sure how many but figure it would have added up to 20 g. Weak effects more akin to a mild stone. Brightened my day though. Got pretty speedy for a couple of hours with the psilocybe mellowness letting me know its more than just caffeinated type speediness.

Just to set the record straight. At the risk of repeating myself for I dont know how many times. P.cubensis fruits in the subtropics of nsw at low elevations throughout winter and into spring. Dry weather stops their fruiting. Not frost. They will fruit in paddocks that have frosts around tree cover.

So please understand. Just because someone says something isnt so doesnt mean it isnt so. That message I've tried to get across to people. Believe me having a limited outlook doesnt make you smart. Just a smartass.

Thanks NC. I find it easier to eat mushrooms than deal with people as my posts probably show.
Glad to see you around. You have my respect. I cant say that to many people here though. Think I'll go now.

Good question. Great haul also. I'll guess 30-40 g dried. If they are little ones, well a fair bit less.

Heyowana, do you think it is possible that Cubensis could fruit in Northern Victoria?

Hey everyone good to see this thread is still active.
Is anyone having any luck around the central coast?? Been lots of rain lately thinking of going for a hunt but haven’t found any actives apart from Amanita, might have better luck going to the blue Mountains for the weekend. Any suggestions for Sydney/blue Mountains or would it be better going towards Jenolan? Cheers

I don't know. My knowledge extends from Sydney to Cairns. I follow the sun so dont like going south. I remember people telling me about finding magic mushrooms down Bega. Could have been cubensis or meanies however.

The further you go south of the subtropics the shorter the season for cubensis. So if they did occur down northern Victoria its likely to be summer/early autumn I'd imagine.

Since we are on the subject of other states I saw a program back in the days of black and white tv. Farmers in SA were spraying their cow paddocks to keep mushroom hunters out who were after goldtops. So if cubensis did occur in SA maybe they are in Victoria in the right paddocks.

Sydney was a lot like that. In most paddocks there'd be meanies growing on cow dung in Summer. Yet goldtops would be there too in the right paddocks. In the old days they'd say where brahman cattle go goldtops follow. I was witness to that when I used to stay on a farm near Gloucester. My uncle had herefords. Meanies galore but only the occasional goldtop. His neighbour had brahmans mixed with herefords and crosses thereof. Goldtops were always there up till easter.

43g dried.

Hey guys, curious what's the lowest altitude you have found mushrooms in Sydney? Currently finding them around the 90-120m altitude.
So I am thinking 100m+ is the go, but could be so wrong. Let me know

Yep you and hewoyana are correct.

I have found subs at 23m last week. Although most patches i've come across were in the 50 to 80m range

Ahhh really appreciate the response, this is super helpful. Been limiting my searches. I'll expand and let you know how I go. Glad to see your season is getting good, how many dry G's did you end up finding?

No problem. I think what Heyowana said is true; I have read/heard many people say that 'such and such does not grow in location x'. Well I have been to such locations and have found such species despite the allegations.

Weekend's haul was 40g. Really pleased with how my first season hunting has gone. A nice little hobby I must say...
