agreed. contrast with cloning a mature fruit from a tub or something, where it's advised to split into several plates because you're trying to extract a clean culture from an already contaminated source.

and now it's time to cook some plates.

I think I'm going to use brf agar for cubes and mea for pans now.

I think pans have a better chance of germinating on mea and my cubes look far more rhizomorphic on brf. I transferred to mea and they look completely different and I think they are even colonizing slower.

Has anyone had trouble germinating pans on brf agar? I'm sure it's doable

Personally, I don't like seeing rings around the transfer. Looks contaminated in my opinion.

I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but I have no idea how to search for it.

How "3D" is healthy myc?

Does it get fuzzy at all, or is it completly 100% flat along the agar?

Flat vs 3D
Rhizzo vs torment

As long and the 3D is uniform, should be clean. If you have Tufts, suggest hitchhikers. There is a contamination thread in here somewhere showing this.

The form myc takes, seems to be (most common theory I've read in here) the speed of growth based on nutrition. Lots of food makes slow fat fluffy myc. Little food makes fast rhizzo myc (eek, where's my next decent meal?).

Makes sense to me though haven't tested personally. My next agar run is going to be low nutrient to verify for myself. Faster growing myc with less chance of contams. . . Sounds too good to be true.

Same agar recipe for both of these:

One rhizo

One tomentose

Different strains/species grow differently too though, and react differently to environmental factors?

You have there a cube and an azure?

I love to wake up and see the sun break through the clouds of myc. Sometimes you have to look through just the right spot of the 2 cup ziplock round screwtop. This is what happens when you already got your GT T2 and decide to use it to test way too much B+ LC.

And for those all about that booty.

A Penis Envy T2 to add a little order to the chaos.

Hello everyone.

I have been working with agar the last few weeks. My goal was to use a spore syringe with PC Ecuador spores on agar to grow some mycelium first, then transferring as often as it takes to achieve some proper rhizomorphic growth. After this I aim for achiving some fruit in a monotub.

After 4 transfers (and a lot of bacterial contaminations in the beginning; at least I became much better in the meantime), this is what I have right now. Somehow it looks beautifully rhizomorphic to me, but in a way also very different to what I have seen many times here. I would love to use this (and some similar looking plates) to do some A2G - Do you think I am ready to go?
My plan ist to cut one plate into 9 wedges, using 3 of these for 0.5qt glas of rye berries. So one plate should go for 3 glases of 0.5qt each.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi all, my first post. Still a noob, but a few years into this. I love the agar envy thread! Here are some plates I just put into cold storage, unfortunately no time to do anything with them.  TLY variety that I salvaged from an 18 month old grain jar that was sitting in a moldy unplugged fridge for all that time. Plucked grains from the center of the mass, this is four or five transfers later, I don't keep good track of such things. 2% MEA.

Indeed, and it was worth the trouble I think. This culture was a clone that grew very well and I've found to be quite potent. I thought I had lost all of my spore prints in a move, so this was my last chance to save it. I found the prints later, but didn't really want to start over from spores again anyway.

If it's from a print, it's no longer the same genetics as the clone culture it came from...

Yeah, the original spores came from a dirty syringe from a crappy source. Couldn't even germinate them on agar because of the bacteria load. I ended up dropping them on an oversized brf cake. Dug out some colonized clumps after about 3 weeks and went to agar then. So the life cycle of this specimen has been spores>brf>agar>grain>mono>clone back to agar>grain>moldy fridge>agar. Lol.
Cheers.

I found an old pastyplate that has started to pin. I was under the impression that this particular plate was contamintated. However, since it is starting to pin I am now wondering if I'm wrong. Can contaminated plates pin at all? The mycelium doesn't look all that healthy to me but I'm no expert.
