The thing is, among the dead community if someone had extra back then and you were in need, you didn't even have to ask.

I've met a few older fans (generally), and I've hung out with a few younger ones (generally)...the difference is enormous. A lot (surely not all) of the younger people seem to guard the money their parents gave them for a summer tour like complete bitch clams, all the while looking for a free ride wherever they can find it. Older fans just want to enjoy themselves and everyone else...I'm sure they would head home if they really couldn't keep up.
Edit: That sounds really negative...I'm sure there is still plenty of love at the kind of shows you'd see following a band.

Unfortunately, I was born too late to really experience "tour life." Didn't really get into the Dead until last summer... I got to experience a bit of the life on the road, but at most a week or so. I had saved up money for the shows and such, but to try to save as much as possible, I brought a lot of Bell's beer along with me and sold it as much as I could. But usually by the time I had sold enough to buy a ticket and maybe a veggie burrito I would trade a bit of Bell's for some chocolates or a bag of something special, and then get all happy and joyful and just share them with whomever was around...

Needless to say, the cases I brought didn't last me too long

I'd really like to do something like that. Maybe w/ the fruits of my labor (by that I mean hard-earned American currency)...or maybe I could make veggie burritos.

I'm planning on doing a similar trip this summer, when the Dead are in the midwest (i just happened to plan a trip to visit my parents in Michigan around the same time  ). Go from Alpine > IN > Detroit > Columbus with some Bell's... plus I'll have to drive through Kalamazoo from IN to Detroit, so I can restock! Nice beer sells (and gets drunk) quick at shows.

That sounds like a pretty sweet summer. Quality beer seein' you through...I like that idea. Make sure you get to spend more than an afternoon with your parents . 4 venues...nice.

 yeah I'll stay for a few weeks... When I talked to my mother on the phone she asked me, "why the sudden change? I thought you wanted us to come visit you?". I said "well it'll be cheaper for me to fly to the US instead of both you and dad flying to Denmark, and it'd be nice to see some people, and *cough cough mumble mumble* the Dead will be coming through the midwest *cough cough*". She responded, "so you are only coming to visit us for the LSD?!" I've got a funny mom!
