One of the most important things is to not make a habit of being a custie.
NEVER get a ticket from stub hub. You can just about always find a ticket ON LOT. Never over pay for something you can find cheaper elsewhere...regardless of if it's weed, a shirt, sticker, acid, ticket,
Case study: a friend and I decide to go on tour. He has 500 bucks. Tells me he took the liberty of buying me a ticket on stubhub and I can pay him back later I figure Im only taking a minor hit though and actually work out a barter deal where Ill take care of gas since I dont have the money yet. I have like 70 bucks in my pocket and that's it.
Ive NEVER seen a kid walk off lot with more merchandise than this kid did. signed blotter art, shirts, posters, pins,
At one show this kid pays over a hundred dollars for a ticket...I believe I traded a pin and 22 bucks for a floor seat and he was up in some balcony.
Every 15 minutes he was asking to go to the car to put away his newly scored merchandise. IF one vendor sees you paying too much from another vendor he'll see you as easy pray....and this kid was it.
I groundscored two shirts, got kicked down a poster, groundscored a badge, groundscored weed, bartered for some cool pins, never payed face and walked away with about 800 dollars.
He spent all 500 bucks, went to get MORE from the bank, never payed less than face(usually significantly more), etc and walked away with more merchandise from each lot than Ive EVER seen anyone do before, brought nothing to work (cept for his buddies wire wraps...which he didnt even take out of the car until like the 4th show and was really not making any money on, none of them sold)
Some people to have a grip to spend at a show...many people dont...IMO it's better to sell the small cheap stuff because you sell more often (beers, sandwhiches, shots, stickets, pins, tshirts)...people are much more likely to buy that than your autographed timothy leary poster, 1000 dollar wire wrap, glycol filled diffusor, 300 gram rainbowed tourmaline, ...you arent gonna make as much money when you do sell something but you are GUARANTEED a sale every night....as opposed to being set for a few shows and then selling nothing cept to a wealthy old head, college custie, drunk/tripping impulse buyer and someone just wanting to help you out....all tour.
Diversify too....have that two thousand dollar piece, but if you do that make sure youve got people around you to make sure you dont get pilfered from, or until you have enough lot cred that people arent even gonna fuck with you cuz they know people have your back.
I mean it was his first rodeo and you do learn these things over time.
Dont buy nitrous. Bring your own beer. Dont buy any merchandise unless you HAVE TO have it, try to barter for it(many will), HAGGLE, make good connections, remember names, never pay more than face unless it's a tiny show that's impossible to get into, completely sold out and you cant get a miracle.
Just cuz it's your first rodeo doesnt mean you need to act like it...and be careful who you tell that too also. The guy with the bunk sheet is looking for the kid who is all cheerful about going to his first show.
Pipes, stones, etc...get a locking gun case, dont sell your shit outta a cardboard box or have it loose on a table...unless you have to. Make things look presentable as possible...colorful signs, a cloth over the table, sheet of fabric over your pin board, gem jars for your crystals, egg carton foam for your pipes, ez-up, industrial size cooler...all make you look much more legit than the dude with the cardboard box or just a dirty table.
