I felt good about myself one day and saw this bum in town who looked worse for ware. I knelt down to him and asked if he was ok and would like anything to drink or eat. I forget exactly what he said now but he seemed really moody despite my open friendliness and willingness to go get him food and whatnot. Nevertheless, I got him an expensive cup of tea and cookie from Starbucks. He simply said, "Thanks."  and that was it. I went on my merry way, a little less money than what I had before and no distinct sense of satisfaction...purely because little gratification was shown.
