Panhandlers

Whats your position on panhandlers. Seems like the last year or so they have been all over my hometown. If I drive through the city (Lansing mi) I will see a minimum of five. I used to hand out a dollar sometimes but some recent news stories have changed my mind on that.

I've also come across a Facebook group called job applications for panhandlers. Where they encourage handing out applications to local businesses instead of money.

I usually talk to panhandlers, if they're chill I'll help them out.  I actually met a panhandler a couple days ago who has gone to Rainbow Gathering and was a suuuper chill guy.  My friend and I smoked him out :laugh:

Over the past year or so I've given just about every panhandler or homeless person I've seen money or some sort of substance if they were into that.  The amounts have ranged from $1-10.

This changed when I took a look at my finances and realized how much I was actually giving to these people a week.  I enjoyed helping them out but I'm at the point in my life where I need to bank all of my cash in hopes of pushing forward with my career.  It has been about a month since I've given away any cash; I simply say "Sorry, man" and either keep walking or stop to have a chat with them.

Once I've broken through to the other side, I will start donating again.

I ignore them.
There's a good shelter in town that will help them get their life started back up with a place to stay and food and help them get a job.
So fuck em if they don't take advantage of that.

There's a father/son duo that has been panhandling around here for years and years on the same corner.
They make decent money, but who would want to beg for a living?
Who teaches their kid that lifestyle?

I ignore them, if they want money so bad they can go pawn off that gold wristband they're wearing, or they can stop buying la sportiva hiking boots, (those cost in the 150-250$ range).  Or they can stop buying smith sunglasses to stand in the sun.

My current income is 0$.  No way I'm going to give money to someone who makes more panhandling than I do a year working.

In the city that I live in, there is a huge population of homeless people. But, because of that, there's also a lot of shelters and churches around that help out. I don't really feel bad about not giving them money, but they are extremely persistent. and scary looking. and if you're a young women walking alone, it ends up being easier to just give them something to make them go away. the other day i was in line at taco bell and there was a guy that was going around to all of the cars and asking for money. and even if you roll up your window and try ignore him, he is still right there talking to you. iono. i know that many homeless people are out on the streets because life has been hard, but I feel like those are not the people that end up`approaching me on the street. i get the scary men that get all up in my personal space and will not leave until i give them something and if i don't they try and make me feel horrible.  :/

I tell them to eat wild plants, and forage for food.

I can survive at least 3/4 seasons myself by only eating what is immediately foragable.

often when panhandlers say they are hungry, they are sitting right next to an edible plant.

i do give them tips about edible plants and trapping techniques etc. though.

give a man a fish / teach a man to fish.

I won't give them money, usually because I don't have any cash/change on me but there have been times I've bought an extra burger at Jack n the box and given them one.

Yeah I have given food to homeless people.  There's this place in town called the Little Nugget, and they give you over a pound of fries with their 1/2pound burger, and I usually have so many fries left I don't know what to do with them, and we all know microwaving fries sucks.  So I usually walk around a bit till I find someone asking for money and I'll give them the fries.  Most people accept them happily, I've had one or two look at me like I was an asshole and I told them "You want money?  Get a job.  You want food, it's right in front of you."

Interesting responses. I find myself hard pressed to hand them
Money anymore. The news reports and articles for in my head. However, I did see a pregnant one the other day that got a five spot outa me. A friend once said to me: if they have time to stand on the corner all day, why not stand in McDonald's and make an hourly wage. Contribute to society in some fashion. And I suppose that make sense provided they aren't physically disabled. Even disabled people hold jobs though. :shrug:

Yea, if you're going to panhandle, do it the way I remember people doing it as a kid.  Perform a street act, entertain people, make children laugh, basically earn your money.  "Need Money Have Starving Family" on cardboard, while you stand there and try to look like you can't provide for yourself makes me think "Well maybe if that person tried to contribute to society we wouldn't think of them as shitbags."

The most I will give to a person with a cardboard sign is leftover food.  A lot of the panhandlers won't accept it.  A lot of the homeless bums who don't bother panhandling, will accept it, graciously.

I think one of the mentality problems of these lazier panhandlers is they went from being given a lot of things throughout their lives, not having to work as hard as some of the rest of us, to being broke.  So now they feel they shouldn't have to work their asses off for a dollar, that it's not fair and that we should provide for them.

about 25 years ago I had a friend that owned a marketing company, if offered
me $100 for ever person I recruited for his company, he told me to target
panhandlers, the job was telemarketing and it paid nearly double minimum wage
plus bonuses and he provided a place to stay with private rooms. the
accommodations werent great but they were far better than under a bridge. .
I hit atlanta and of the people I talked to, only about one in 50 would even
consider it.

all the people with "will work for food" signs, same thing, I always tell
them to hop in the car and I'll put them to work, most reply with "just give
me a few bucks instead"
