Panhandling

I see people panhandling every time I am in larger cities, and often in small ones as well. Often I can spot regulars who I have seen before, either in the same spot or panhandling elsewhere around town.

I'm curious what other people think about people who panhandle. It's never bothered me unless the people are aggressive about it.. one time in Portland a woman made me jingle my pants pockets to assure her I did not have any change. I was like WTF seriously?

On the other hand, I myself have panhandled many times in my life.. usually when I was younger and short on cash, as well as bored but apparently not bored enough to get a job. :smile:

I have also panhandled while traveling (hitch hiking and what not), when I was short on cash and needed food.. and to tell you the truth, booze. Alcohol was always a big part of my life when I was a hitch hiker, as it is with many.

These days I do a lot of "busking", but never straight panhandling and absolutely never in a way that would come off as aggressive. If you don't know, busking is playing music for change, essentially. I'll take my guitar, or uke or some other instrument, in front of a store, to a rest stop, downtown of whatever city I am in, etc. and play old blues and folk songs, with other older styles of music mixed in. People seem to dig it for the most part, throw in some change or a couple dollar bills, and sometimes wait for me to finish the song so that we can chat some. They mostly ask about the style of music I play and what not, sometimes briefly and sometimes it turns into a great conversation.

If I am in need of cash, I will make a sign that says something about traveling and being broke.. never any exaggerated sob stories or downright lies. But most the time I'll just open my guitar case, with no sign, and people get the idea. It's all about ethics and respect.

So, what do you guys think about panhandling?

So you are saying there is no excuse for panhandling, whatsoever?

What if you are stuck in a foreign country and get mugged? Or say your house burns down, your have no insurance, and carry only cash due to paranoia about our economic system? All your money burns up..

Or if you travel a couple hundred miles to a festival only to find that you left your ticket at home, or that you bought a ticket you thought was legit and was actually counterfeit?

I'm not saying these are common scenarios for panhandling, but you have to admit there's probably some exceptions right?

No exceptions.

If you are going to sit on the street and ask for money, at least busk or offer some form of entertainment.

Even if it's like the crazy guy at our central station that stands around quoting (read: screaming) Monty Python to you as you walk past... he's a badass. I've given this guy money, because he makes me LOL, he's got every single Monty Python quote memorized and apply's them quite well to people.

There's this teenage homeless kid that has a bunch of different infant xylophones (ones with 3 - 5 keys, usually all in the key of C major :cool:)... he rocks out hardcore, busts out sick beats considering his situation. I've given this guy money multiple times.

Then you get the bum with a bottle of alcohol, half passed out, trying to get your money?

FAIL!

Panhandling is humiliating.

People make good money by humiliating themselves on TV, so why should it be considered morally reprehensible to panhandle? Doesn't make sense to me. Guess that means I'm totally sympathetic.

By the way, being a street musician, or "busking", is not panhandling in my book. You ARE working for the money, and probably getting considerably underpaid at the same time.

Though, I've heard that panhandlers and street musicians make a LOT of money in major cities.

busking is cool
onramp panhandlers are kind of irritating sometimes
i guess it depends on the person and their attitude
sometimes it comes off in an abrasive way, like wtf am i supposed to feel obligated or guilty if i don't throw 'em some coin?
I'm just drivin' here, c'mon :tongue:
I've had some great companionships spring into play through kicking it down to travelling folks and hitchhikers.
I don't know which way to vote :ohwell: but drug addicts suck and I don't like dealing with their horseshit when i'm just trying to gad about the town

If you cross a street tward me at night for any reason ($) your getting a .40 pulled on you scum ass.
I have so many stories about overly aggressive bums. My personal favorite is the
shit head that sits on a street with parking and walks up to cars when people get
out and says "hay man (its always hay man) spare some change? i watch the cars"
which = pay me or im fucking your car up. First up, if you walk up to the car like
that and im in it your looking at the bad end of a black metal tube. Second i've
found a good strategy: i take a picture of the shit head and tell him if for any
reason my cars fucked up when i get back, i dont care if a meteor hits it, im going
to search hell and high water till i find him again and break both his legs.

If i gave a dime to every one of you shit heads that " .. needs 38 cent fo a bus"
i would be begging for cash and fighting for the nice corner by the casino.

I've been thinking about the opposite approach, Instead of dressing like a homeless guy to get money. Dress in really nice white suit and collect money for "open hands around the world" which really means its my money suckers. I wonder how much cash i could get.
