I tend to be a bit of a busker myself when I'm in that kind of a rut (or in the very least - I offer *something* in exchange for my 'tips') but straight up panhandling is something I could never bring myself to do...I've seen too many people abuse that position, and too many that soil the concept of partaking in other's good nature

Busking I suppose is different. And I could see being in a situation where you might have to panhandle.

But, the motherfuckers are fucking annoying. Bold fucks walking down the street, groceries in hand, asking for a dollar. "oh, I just need money for the bus." Fuck them. I don't give money to anybody. Life is hard. It's hard for me too. Fuck those scummy motherfucking tweaker/crackhead/fuck ups. I'm a fuck up too, but manage to not go begging and harassing folks for money. Fucking annoying fucks.

I agree. Anyone who walks up to me begging for change is an asshole, unless it's a guy who forgot his wallet or something and I'm in line at McDonald's. There's no excuse for such a dumb thing. Really.

If you're going to beg for money, get yourself a makeshift sign and sit quietly to the side. If you look like you need it, I'll give it to you.

One thing I'd really like to do, though, is find a panhandler and say "Look, I can't give you any cash because I don't know what you'll do with it. However, I'd be glad to offer you some dinner, a nice hot shower, a clean set of clothes (or launder his current ones) a shave (and maybe a haircut, though I only know how to do crew cuts lol), and a warm spot on my couch for the night.

If a guy's really that bad off, he deserves it. Of course, I won't sleep because I know someone that desperate would be prone to thievery. But, I'd use the time to get to know him and what happened to him.

My cousin Jason once took a homeless guy out to dinner and heard the dude's life story. Turns out he was a lawyer, doing very well for himself. His wife had serious issues, though, and attempted suicide every time. His insurance wouldn't pay because it's "self-inflicted", and after she was diagnosed as major depressive with suicidal tendencies, no insurance would pick her up for any fee. Well, the medical costs kept piling up, and when he had almost nothing left, she finally managed to go through with it.

So, after all that struggle, his wife was dead, he was broke, in tens of thousands of dollars in debt, and completely broken as a person.

All he could do was panhandle and hope somehow he'd be able to start lawyer-ing again, but once he lost his house he couldn't keep well-dressed and clean and whatnot, which is important for that job.

It still haunts Jason to this day. I cried like a baby when he told me that story. Poor dude...

If you're panhandling in Humboldt, get the fuck out of there! 

#1.  It's a stupid place for a bum to live, rains too much. 
#2.  There are seriously some kids there with rich families who 
        panhandle for the fun of it, or for pot money.
#3.  4 out of 5 of them look twenty-something, healthy, and, oh yeah,
        lazy. 
#4.  There on every fucking corner in the small main part of town,   
        asking me for leftovers when I haven't even had a bite of my
        sandwich.
        Go make a fishing rod.

But other than that, they're okay.

I'm not proud of this, but two years ago me and several friends would "spainge" almost daily. We got pretty good at it and rarely went home with less then 200 dollars.

We would take my friend's car all over town (often times leaving town) and hit up every single Walmart, Target, and grocery store we could find. We had an elaborate story of how we were from out of town and how our car was broken into. All our money, a laptop, and the CD player were stolen. Surprisingly enough this worked on almost everyone that would stop and listen to our story. Hell, we even got money from a couple of off duty police officers during this time.

The kicker was my friends car was perfect for our story. His car really had been broken into not long before we started doing this, so the siding on the passenger side window was stripped off, the lock to the trunk was all fucked up, he really did have his cd player ripped out, and his gas gauge was broken and stuck on E. Anyone that didn't believe us and wanted to see proof that we were stranded would take a quick look at the car, and usually end forking over more money then anybody else that day.

The trick was to never ask anyone going in the store, but rather catch them on their way out(so they don't tell store employees of our activities). Also we would never ask anyone for money, but rather ask the person to drive to the nearest gas station with us and put gas in our tank. Most people were not willing to do this but believed we were being sincere and gave us cash. 

We never came home without a full tank of gas, pizza, enough weed for us to smoke all night, and a whole lot of alcohol (usually expensive micro brews or hard alcohol).We even financed several camping trips this way. We put in a weeks worth of work and went out into the woods with 15-20 friends and enough booze, weed, and drugs to last us for several days.

I think its important to note that during this this we were all extreme alcoholics. Alcohol influenced everything we did. I had a lot of fun spainging and don't regret a thing but I've gladly put that behind me.

I could never bring myself to panhandling even when I was homeless and living on the streets.
I found it to be rather humiliating. I guess if you have zero pride then whatever.
I mean I've gotten a few bucks off random people when in real bad situations, but other than that I could never bring myself to do it.
There is almost always a way to get food and find shelter, if you can do a little legwork.

Busking however is another story entirely.
Then you are actually providing a random service (entertainment) to random people on the street.
And you aren't begging anyone for money, it's just implied, and they make the decision and don't feel pressured. Pressuring people and being pressured is geh.

I've been known to toss homeless people money if they look like they really need/deserve it.
But the guy waiting for me outside, coming up to me and bugging me for change when I walk out the store can go fuck himself.
I've been on both sides of it so I know what to look for.

There are homeless people that don't fuck with people, and humbly try to get by on what they can.. they might ask someone for change from time to time but they certainly wont go out of their way for it, they get by on their own accord.

And there are homeless people that do fuck with people, and try to manipulate situations to their advantage. These are the ones that ask EVERYONE for money. Most likely to support an alcohol/meth/crack addiction.

Then there are the worse kind of panhandlers. The people with houses and cars, and most likely money in their pocket, who pretend to be homeless. I mean what the fuck. I've actually seen this one chick that would drive to a certain spot everyday, park her fancy ass car, go into a public bathroom and change into bum clothes, and spend the rest of the day begging.

panhandling is ok if you really need it... like a one time thing
but if your out there begging for money to get a crack rock, bag of dope etc....evey fucking day at the same spots then thats just wrong

And thats what 99% of people are begging for not that bullshit story they try to put on ya like "I haven't ate in 3 dayz" I always get that one

I live in the Austin area and there are thousands of beggars/a huge homeless population, though most of them don't actually panhandle or beg. I don't mind the freeway people or even the people who ask for change on the street corner, but the people who ask you for money to "watch your car" drive me apeshit. They come RIGHT up to your door and sort of block your way out... it's scary, especially when I'm by myself at night and walking around in parking lots. Also a pet peeve - people who hang around in public lots pretending to be parking attendants.

I didn't like that poll.

I was forced to vote "there is no excuse for it" even though that isn't how I feel.

I recognize that extraordinary circumstances can force you to have to beg, but seriously, fuck any asshole who plays his instrument in a dull or uninteresting fashion and fuck any panhandler who bangs on his ghetto home made drums. I walk down the street with the expectation of either talking with somebody I am with or enjoying some time to think, not to listen to your justification for begging.


Where I'm at there are plenty of events for buskers or street musicians, stick to those, then I can listen to your music IF I WANT.

I also dislike anybody who asks for money, pursues money or harasses pedestrians in any way. Sit quietly in your corner with a sign if you must, but don't be ASKING for it.

No need to guilt somebody who doesn't want to part with money they worked for. You know, work, the effort you put in in order to receive monetary compensation.



This subject brings out my more aggressive and angry side.

I felt good about myself one day and saw this bum in town who looked worse for ware. I knelt down to him and asked if he was ok and would like anything to drink or eat. I forget exactly what he said now but he seemed really moody despite my open friendliness and willingness to go get him food and whatnot. Nevertheless, I got him an expensive cup of tea and cookie from Starbucks. He simply said, "Thanks."  and that was it. I went on my merry way, a little less money than what I had before and no distinct sense of satisfaction...purely because little gratification was shown.
