Those Who Have Toured

I'm just curious as to who's followed a band before (), what it was like and how you got by (very optional, of course ). I've always been interested and would greatly appreciate any stories you'd feel like telling .

Food stamps! be nice, be humble, dont be afraid to ask for help, dont screw people over by taking advantage of there generousity. Bring lost of socks. if sitting on cold metal chaires put carboard down between you and the seat. Take care of your ride/driver. Dont be afraid to pan handle if you need to. Bring a tarp,a few sharpie pens, duct tape, a mimi camping stove, ramen noodles. And be healthy dont forget to drink water and eat food. Eat your fruits and veggies.
Thats all the thing s that I have found to be important. Ps I hate hotels/motels.

Sounds like fun. I don't know if I'm ready yet, though. I camped for free up and down 101 for a little over a month, and at the end I was definitely ready for a bed. I think that that was the best month of my life. When did you tour?

Ok I sleeped in a hamok for a long time. Made from a bed sheat. Search bed sheat hamock. Will save you from getting wet on the ground. Its cumfy and cozy. You can lash up a tarp. And you can camp on a hill or in a field between two fence posts. I never was a dedicated tour cat. I would go on little stints and often go my own way. I wasn never into seeing every show. I dont mind just hangging with people in there towns for a while.

I did nothing for 8-9 years but follow the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia band to every show. I retired in 95.

Your screwing me over using food stamps for your personal enjoyment. And it doesn't get much lower than panhandling. If your not creative enough to find a way with out begging maybe you should just hit the local shows. Don't end up a toothless tour rat.
I'd save up a decent amount of money but you are going to want income. If you must slinging will cover your expenses but I don't recommend it unless you really know what you are doing don't rip people off either. Cooking for people will work unless you are hitchhiking. Bring a nice supply of rice, beans and water. Stop for fresh veggies, fruit and a piece of meat every now and then. Get a a little ways off of the interstate to go shoping you'll save money.
Be kind.
I don't know there is plenty more maybe I'll think of it later.

Basically when I followed the Dead, we would spend all our money on drugs and then find ways to eat, handouts and such. Sometimes on campuses, students would have cook outs and we would invite ourselves for a nice lunch before a show. But food was never a priority. We would sleep in the van at night wake up and mingle with the crowd all day .....meet people from previous years and talk about the tour. The scene was just beautiful back then ....
I met some Hells Angels that I became close to and would make a point of looking up every tour.
I toured east of the Mississippi from 1976- 1983 After that I usually only saw shows here in New York or New Jersey or Conn.
Lots of Stories but no time to even scratch the surface!

Same here I've never hit more than 4 or 5 shows of the same band in a row. I just enjoy travelling. After tomorrow I have 9 days free and I'm hoping in my car with my tent, my back pack and a cooler full of food and heading on the road for alittle bit of time away from it all.

Yeah it's real easy to support yourself on tour if you plan ahead and use your head. I used to know a friend in the late 80's who made $200 a day selling veggie grilled cheese. All he had was a Coleman stove and a couple pans, a knife, cutting board and spatula. He made enough to survive comfortably. Right after the show let out he would pop up his set-up and he couldn't make them fast enough. There are thousands of people who do things like this. People need food, water ,dope and the local people want t-shirts and other souvenirs.

I see, well I wasn't trying to judge and I couldn't really care less anyways. I just personally avoid any type of mooching if I can. I'll confess though my friend who is a university student gets a couple hundred dollars worth of food stamps every month. Well he can never use it all being single and living alone, so everytime we head somewhere he will buy EVERYTHING!

I would use it as a last resort also, I have never had to but I wouldn't be afraid if I was in a bind, so it was sound advice but some kids spend all day begging for change and shit and never once think abot selling one of there pieces or something else they could afford to loose.

Yeah definetly. I did panandle once before. But that was only cuz my friend picked me up with out warning in cali. I didnt get my pay check. He was broke so I dont know why he did it. We made it to luisiana on the cash I had. And had to mooch it the rest of the way. It wasnt even on tour. But yeah get creative make things trade things find an art form and create to fead your trips. My friend is an artsis and has made well over three grand a day at phish shows selling prints at 10 bucks a peac e.
