Re: Which form of govt. do you think works best? [Re: shivas.wisdom]
    #25688966 -

Bro, decentralized? To call the Germanic micro-states "decentralized" is hilarious, especially given you're talking about hundreds of mostly independent states, most of which have absolutely miniscule amounts of territory and population, making any feasible notion of "decentralization" in these states almost impossible. Many of them weren't even monarchies. Some just had completely unique power structures, some were republics, some were absolute monarchies, constitutional monarchies, etc. who constantly warred with each other, traded alliances, issued embargoes on other members, etc. thus highlighting the very problem I brought attention to. To argue that the 2 world wars are an example of why a unified Germany is worse than a completely fragmented Germany is just ridiculous. Germany went from a clusterfuck of extremely weak petty states with almost no cooperation to speak of, and turned it into one of the most prosperous nations in European history. To act as though war is simply a product of the existence of strong nations is naïve and discounts the fact that it almost always has the opposite effect.

In what way do you see the state as an arbitrary designation? You really think there is no meaning or direction involved in the existence of power structures? Defined borders? Administrative responsibility?

My source of the claim that a nation with no federal power, consisting only of autonomous segments of itself, doesn't work, is every example of it being tried in history, from native confederations, to steppe tribes, to pre-communist china, to the HRE, to the original  'version' of the United States. The shit doesn't work. It isn't a nation at all. It isn't anything. It does not promote "individual autonomy" at all. I don't know how you could even argue that.

I'm against centralized representative government, at all levels. I think the problem gets compounded the more you centralize authority, but I agree that the same problems can be found at the local level too.

I wouldn't say that current US system is bottom-up, it clearly is the opposite, but you are correct is positing that bottom-up power dynamics can only exist when they are defended and maintained by the people on the bottom.

That is why I believe that cultivating individual autonomy and direct action as important community values is integral to achieving my vision; because, as I said before, "That government is best which governs not at all"; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have.

I don't think that most people are prepared for, or even desire, the reality of individual freedom. Especially given that our society puts a lot of effort into achieving complacency and respect/fear of authority into its population. That doesn't mean I'll change my own disposition. I spend as much time living in communities that celebrate individual autonomy and resist state encroachment, and they have always worked best in my opinion.

Are you really arguing that the acceptance of authority and accepting that, while you are an individual, you are part of something greater than just yourself, and agree to keep in line in exchange for protection, is equal to 'not being ready for individual freedom'? So either everyone is free to do whatever the fuck we want whenever the fuck we want it, or we have no individual freedom or autonomy? If you think you don't got personal autonomy in America, then I got bad news for ya. You wont last in a stateless anarchic community, where it wont be the government oppressing you, but whoever you're the closest to with the biggest gun.

It doesn't appear to be based off of population, nor geographic size, nor even shared cultural values. You are claiming that the state is the ideal point between federal and local - how are you arriving at this point? What is the formula for deriving the limits of a state government?

There are European countries smaller (both in population and area) than US states. Should they still be subdivided into states? If yes how do you propose these borders be defined?

That's why I'm saying it looks arbitrary to me.

And every centralized nation has collapsed. Every empire has fallen. I guess that means that the nation-state just doesn't work either.

Why stop at the state level, instead of pushing for autonomy at the municipal level?

Many states are essentially the size of countries; even if the problem may be less than what exists at the federal level, shouldn't we expect a similar lack of representation from central state governments as we currently experience from the central federal government?

I don't think so. The difference in views from Kansas to California are much more profound, than within California. Another bonus is that in states, laws can be implemented via ballot measures. If we had something like that on the Federal level, we would already have single payer.

There are only two forms of government possible: Rule by law, or rule by an oligarchy.  Every other system is one of those (monarchy, republics, dictatorships), or is not actually a workable system but a temporary period of transition from the rule of law to an oligarchy (democracy, anarchy).

And history has shown us that states ruled by law always devolve into oligarchies over time, but that most oligarchies do not morph into a system ruled by the law.  It's a one way street.  That's why the quote is that the tree of Liberty must be refreshed with the blood of patriots and tyrants from time to time.

The world is not so black and white and there are some major holes in your logic here.

1.) How does an oligarchy or dictatorship rule without law? Law is the basis of either model.

2.) I agree with your notion that free governments (say a democracy) tends to give rise to an oligarchy/dictatorship. However it seems short sighted in that you think that is somehow the end. The ensuing civil unrest arising from such governments naturally leads the populace to overthrow them and reinstate a government for the people with further safe guards and protections to prevent such oligarchies/dictstorships to arise again; the entire thing is a process, it doesn't end in dictatorship/oligarchy anymore thsn it begins as one.

1) An oligarchy rules by force. The law is replaced by the whim of the oligarchs. The perfect example of this is a monarchy. The king is merely the figurehead of a group of barons and earls who rule, and the law is whatever the king wills at the moment.

2) A Democracy is not a system of government. It is a temporary period of mob rule that always ends with the People being ruled by oligarchs who promise to stop the suffering. No different than anarchy.

The only two forms of government are rule by law and rule by oligarchs. And the rule of law systems always tend back towards oligarchy as time moves forward, requiring a reset from time to time. This has been noted by Machiavelli AND Jefferson, hundreds of years apart.

Can you name a single republic that lapsed into civil unrest and returned to a republican form of government afterwards?  No. That civil unrest always gives rise to rule by oligarchs.

This is why you see “Progresives” calling for revolution and anarchy here in the US. They are, by and large, uneducated morons who want communism or socialism instead of capitalism, and they know that devolving the Republic into civil war will lead to their communist utopian dreams being given another chance to fail and kill millions of people.

Oh my god man, is this really rocket science?

All laws are obvioulsy not 'cut-off' at the state label, I generalized it to refer, in a way, to things that would be reasonable in scale to federal laws. Such as drug legalization, sentence times for certain crimes, etc. It should be up to the populations of an agreed upon sub-area of a nation, which tend to, whether it is states, provinces, counties, or territories, share a sort of sub-identity, culture, and value system relative to their region, which is true for nations all over the world, including America. This power structure becomes more and more important the larger the country becomes, obviously. A heavily centralized Russia would be ridiculous, a heavily decentralized Belgium would be ridiculous.

No one nation is the same and you know it, stop acting like they are. Just because I say that state governments are a reasonable 'cut-off' point for major administrative and judicial action, does not mean i think the same should go for every nation on Earth. You cant say the same for your "the best government is one that doesnt govern at all" argument. That is naïve edgy 13 year old pseud philosophy. A governless state that does nothing is not an individuals paradise. It is just a power vacuum.

Not entirely true.  For a law to be a law, it must remain unchanging.  Socialist banana republics are the ones where the government can change the law at whim to make your legal behavior into something criminal and then prosecute you for it.

No game can be played when the rules as written don't matter and can be changed.

Laws change in the U.S. every day, bro.  The government can change the laws at any time.

Not true. Laws require an act of Congress, and Congress rarely acts.

Regulations issued by government agencies change every day, but they are not laws, merely political dictates.

Proof: The only change to our Constitution was the end of Prohibition. The Constitution Can be added to vía amendments, but the laws laid down there rarely change once written.

It’s still legal to marry your sister in like 13 states. I live in a dry county where you aren’t allowed to buy alcohol, despite prohibition being struck down a hundred years ago.

Our actual laws do not change often.

1) A Monarchy is not an Oligarchy. It is a Monarchy. Monarchies are led by a Monarch. Oligarchies are led by Oligarchs. Some would argue that America is currently an oligarchy, and that those leading the country are the unelected corporate elite, due to their vast wealth, and influence on our political process.

2) A Democracy is a form of government. Here in America, we have a 'representative democracy' or a Republic.

France has 'lapsed into civil unrest' many times. They did just recently, with the yellow vest protesters. They still have a representative government, and their government responded to the will of the people.

Progressives are 'by-and-large' more educated than conservatives. It's actually a classic theme in American politics, that college students tend to be much more progressive, even kicking conservative speakers off of their campuses, and conservatives tend to be manual laborers. I am a laborer, and have been a college student, and it is quite plain to me that this is the case.

America is not a Capitalist society. We have a mixed economy, which has elements of Socialism built into it. We have had a mixed economy for 100 fucking years. Progressives in this country are not making any attempt at a violent revolution. Progressives want a voluntary revolution, implemented by the will of the people, through the voting process. They don't actually want 'Socialism', as defined by Marx. What progressives in America want is to expand the scope of the Kainsian principles that America first implemented with the New Deal.

Yep. Exactly. Boss Hogg in the Dukes of Hazzard is a perfect example. Even at the local level, a couple of rich people buy the handful of powerful people (Sheriff Roscoe), and become tyrants of a single county.

But it is still easier to fight for your rights against a small tyrant at the local level than it is to compete with K Street lobbyists at the federal level.

I didn’t get any further than “A monarchy is not an oligarchy”.  You are not educated enough to have this conversation with me. I spelled out clearly that a monarch is the figurehead of a group of barons and earls who rule as oligarchs.

Go back to the books and learn what you’re discussing, then come back and try it again. I’ve got a Master’s degree in PolySci, spent two and a half years of daily study on this. You’re going to have to do a lot of reading to converse intelligently with me.

If you don't protect a right then don't be surprised when you lose it. The problems your complaining about on the federal level are also on the state and local levels, the problems started on the local level. It's not like your elected representatives that comprise the federal government come from DC, you voted for them in your locale.

This X 1000.

Edit: The problems begin at the individual level. Most people refuse to rule themselves in a moral and honest manner because it’s easier to have a chain of command where they can pass blame for problems up the chain, rather than examine themselves, their actions, and addressing their own shortcomings.

A king cannot defy his earls and barons. History is full of examples of those earls and barons killing a king who didn’t do as they wanted. Pretty much standard thinking since at least the Magna Carta.

Even the most die hard communist dictator must answer to his generals. No one man rules a country.

I think acceptance of authority is likely to be incompatible with individual freedom; doesn't acceptance of authority require one to submit to it over individual desire?

Furthermore, when you depend on an external authority to solve your problems, you don't build the necessary skills to handle them directly. For example, dependance on the police means that many people are unable and/or unwilling to protect themselves beyond dialing 911. Many of these people would be unable and/or unwilling to live without the "protection" of police authority. These people would rather live within the limitations to individual freedom such authority brings (as seen by a very long history of corrupt, abusive, and violent authorities that vastly exceeds any individual crime), than give up the comforting myth of state protection.

This is what I mean by "not being ready for individual freedom".

Near Dylan said:
So either everyone is free to do whatever the fuck we want whenever the fuck we want it, or we have no individual freedom or autonomy?

Things are not so absolute. Individual autonomy is an important metric to consider, but not the be-all-end-all. Everyone doing whatever the fuck they want would obviously be detrimental to personal freedom. There is a balance required. Individuality can only flourish where equality of access to the conditions of existence is the social reality. My main argument is that the power dynamic when deciding this balance should be horizontal, not hierarchical.
