As Enlil said. "Ideal"? As in perfect? Of course not. But what do you want to do, have state governments be replaced with county governments? County with city? City with neighborhood? There has to be some cut-off. States is a fair one.

Why not the individual?  I believe that’s more fair than a state level government ruling over you.

Stupid idea. If each individual decided his/her laws, the weak would be slaves to the strong.

Why stop at the state level, instead of pushing for autonomy at the municipal level?

Many states are essentially the size of countries; even if the problem may be less than what exists at the federal level, shouldn't we expect a similar lack of representation from central state governments as we currently experience from the central federal government?

I was actually going to mention local governmental power because I think they are so entrenched that there's a huge disconnect to the point where they can quietly pass bills or special regulations counter acting the states rights also. A good example of this is in my area a specific county I'm in made it completely illegal to have medical or recreational dispensaries totally overriding the legalization and long standing medical marijuana laws.

Now the county I have to drive to get this medicine is about an hour drive there and back but now that county is very quietly trying to  pass similar measures which would mean I'd have a 2 hour drive to L.A. and back which is fucking stupid. Not only that but in the Antelope Valley where I live right now we have Twice The National unemployment rate because of overpopulation vs amount of jobs . So if we could roll out new parameters on a local level to help recreational and medical cannabis Industries we could generate so much new opportunity and many many many jobs and taxes within that.

So personally I think that we have huge potential is being squandered by our local government and for example recently I campaigned for Katie Hill in my district but even though she won she really can't do much about local legislation. The reason I didn't mention any of this before is because I really don't have an alternative or any ideas on how to fix it. It's a horrible system right now but it's the only one available to us and I would have no idea to restructure that.

A lot of people say well just move and go to the state with good employment like Oregon for example. First of all I have many responsibilities with family and friends in my area and I cannot leave nor would I want to. Home is where the heart is where your family is. Also I think it's wildly irresponsible for someone to say that their community is in great financial turmoil and try and do nothing about it. I rather be poor and barely making it here trying to make my community better then jumping ship and ignoring my responsibilities and my happiness.

And they'd have no way of enforcing those laws

Federal laws changing.....

Well, it looks like criminal justice reform is gonna happen. Hopefully, this will trigger more reform.

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

I like that it is called the 'First Step Act'. To me, that says that there will be more prison reform bills on the horizon. I'm really hoping this encourages similar legislation on the state level, but this is great news regardless!
