I want to chop wood and fetch water

I wish life was just about chopping wood and fetching water. I am not claiming I am an enlightened mind, but the saying says that people get to chop wood and fetch water before they are enlightened. What if that is the way? What if I don't get enlightened if I don't chop wood and fetch water.

It's not meant to be literal.

Even without a fireplace or a well, we all have our wood to chop and water to fetch. The daily things we do to sustain our lives. Making coffee. Cooking dinner. Cutting the grass. Raking leaves. Shoveling snow. Filling your car up with gas. Changing the air filter in the furnace. Enlightenment isn't an ecstatic feeling or the opposite.

I don't think an enlightened mind would own a car because they would be too busy chopping wood and fetching water.

But what was supposed from the beginning was a figuretive image of meditation as simplification of "life", in a kind of image, of day to day existence, that is emulated.

It is actually in what you are presently doing, very literally. What else? Whatever this is, presently, can be expanded, followed, and proceed from moment to moment, smooth in flow and sharp, in focus; and this only happens to be in a concept of life, everyday existence, or any story or image of oneself, or another and so on.

you think enlightenment is being a fetcher and a hewer? that's less than enlightenment, but it can lead to it, maybe...it's certainly a hard life.

Bicycling is a pretty engenius modern invention, and a good way of simplifying, bioenergetically, I hear. Although bicyclists are not great signalers on the road, all the time... :tongue:

It's ritualistic, representing a course of action that leads to nirvana. Fetching wood is probably not canonical but it relates a form of ritual or practice. Our impression of what enlightenment is changes based on experience over time. We get the gist but don't become the gist, or retain a moment in time when lucidity leaves no room for questions. Qualities of chopping wood could be, practical, useful, exercise, patience. It's not all about becoming enlightened so much as it is about doing what is necessary to have water and heat and cooked food.

Seems pretty simple to me. Living at Buddhist monasteries as I have I can see how just those activities could bring enlightenment.

Ask someone to go to an office everyday in a big city and do taxes and shit and it all falls apart, IMO.

the quote pertains to life hundreds of years ago in Japanese monasteries
or indeed hundreds of years ago everywhere in rural in Japan

the point is simply that outwardly life does not change after enlightenment
it is meant to deromanticize enlightenment
and to clarify what takes place
but it is cryptic/poetic/brief

the point is that nothing is attained in terms of power
nothing is attained in the sense that life becomes easier or more pleasurable outwardly
the ego gets NOTHING - you will get NOTHING
its not about getting

get that its not about getting
its about release from feeling there is some you, that needs to get
the unconscious, invisible anxiety, that subtle feeling that something is wrong & needs fixing drops away
thats all
it is a state from which one can die at peace at any moment

I don't think desk jobs are the healthiest, so part of the benefit is the exercise. The solitude is useful as well I'm sure. The qualities I mentioned are conducive to an enlightened state, but I think having the wood and water is a big part of why it's done. Someone has to do it. Modern life is certainly more hectic in that regard for many.

eventually the shoulders get sore and the hands/fingers numb or slow-to-move.  repetitive or monotonous motions/tasks are ultimately bad for the body.
