How do you deal with YOUR suffering? * 1
    #22942837 -

I think this is a subject that affects us all, some more than others, and moreso at certain times of our lives than others. Having just had a little stint and having pulled myself out using slightly different techniques than I usually would, I wanted to ask the question here.

I find the main things that pull me out of my own suffering are:

1. Meditation
2. Exercise
3. Seeing friends
4. A good psychedelic trip

Although these are difficult ones to hit at the height of suffering IME - they require motivation and I find it much harder to come by in low periods. So I've come to recognise some further measures which help more than I had previously given them due credit for, and require a little less motivation than the first four:

5. Naming the creator of 'good' (happy) and 'bad' (self-critical) thoughts - the 'puppy-dog' and 'dick-face' respectively for me (thanks to RJ Tubs 202 for this one!)
6. Smoking a little (just a little) weed and listening to some good tunes
7. Reading good books
8. Laying in bed and watching animated comedy (self-soothing as my therapist calls it)

So what do you guys do?

It will only destroy what you are not.

When I'm stressed, I eat food, masturbate, or lift weights. Sometimes in all three in tandem.

Ah you're my soul twin,

Meditation, pranayama, asanas, exercise, relaxation techniques, a little bit of cannabis, a good meal at a nice restaurant,  good conversation with friends and lots of hugs and cuddling, sex, psychedelics, reading books, listening to music, a good film -not too into comedy but some wicked humor can get me cackling, more often in conversation and comic strips...

Everything is better than it was the last time.  I'm good.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Too right man. I could do with more sex and yoga in my life right now. Or even better, mixing the two, tantra stylee. If only it was easier to come across..

Chain smoke and grit my teeth  Wish I had a good way to deal with suffering, I've been trying to find a new way lately. Reading, seeing friends and exercise all help a bit but like op said it's difficult at times when you have no motivation. Which when things are at their worst I don't.

I have always in the past turned to drugs when I was really suffering emotionally. I find there to only be a rebound effect when the drugs wear off. Its like robbing Peter to pay Paul. The pain is relieved initially only to return later equally bad or much worse.

When I'm really suffering I can't hide from it, I can't run from it so I don't. I anguish in it. I acknowledge that I'm suffering, I acknowledge that I hate it. It sounds peaceful but really I grunt, groan, yell, throw a little fit sometimes... And things gradually get a bit better. Its like I get so exhausted from being upset after a while that my mind begins to slowly distance itself from the pain. Maybe I realize the futility.

From there im gradually able to get lost in a small task or distraction. Doing something that feels productive helps at that point. Weather its reading, planning a project, playing a game, walking, cleaning, cooking, fixing something etc.

- Psychedelic or classical music
- Philosophy
- A good satire or parody
- Opiates (probably the most profound relief)
- Cuddling and caressing
- Outdoor recreation like surfing and kayaking

Due to previous "realizations", I can no longer have psychedelic trips without experiencing overwhelming and cataclysmic anxiety.

Opiates are great relief but then you have to deal with the rebound.  Ecstasy is also great but you can't  use it often enough and again the rebound.  Then of course my go to is deep relaxation with hypnosis cds. No rebound issues with this one.  I can get pretty profound relief.  Then hiking with my dogs and loving them up is great.  Playing ukulele, doing puzzles, listening to music, talking with empathic friends,  and on and on. Suffering is the human condition. Distraction is the treatment.

Of course the ultimate end to suffering, if you don't belief in afterlife punishment is SUICIDE!   I'm saving it for when the suffering overwhelms all my other distractions.

Just learn Tantra, it's what I've been practicing and it gets results,  it has shit to do with the kama sutra or any sexual yoga.....  and believe me i like my sex and drugs w/ wildly awake partners, they have nothing to do with one another, intimacy and self exploration trumps weird sexual yogic positions any day

The rebound from opiates are quite distressing, yes. But since suffering is an inevitable byproduct of the human condition anyways, as you say, I think the transitory serenity produced by them far outweighs the transitory comedown.

I think I've come to consider opiates as the most "spiritual" of all drugs. No need for pretty colors or abstract thought. Just a radiant blissful calm that transcends time, space, and causation.

I think I'm adding opiate addiction to my list of possible suicide methods for when I, like you say, feel "overwhelmed".  :thaaannks:

As I type this I'm on 30 mgs of Oxycodone.  It's the only  med that has effectively relieved the pain from this fucking polyneuropathy. So I get a double blessing from this stuff. Unfortunately tolerance develops so I have to bite the bullet and take less than optimal doses often and tough it out so that I can take a bliss dose a couple times a week.  BTW Kratom is really the way to go rather than pharmaceutical opiates.  I actually prefer the high. I plan on kicking and going back on Kratom soon.  At least for as long as I can.

But as you say and I agree. Opiates are very "spiritual". I really get into a full on loving head space. Lots of empathy for others and compassion for a suffering world in general.  I often think of many of my brothers here.  I wish for you all relief from your suffering and if I've had a disagreement with someone here that has left me less than compassionate I can usually forgive it when I'm high and forgive myself for getting caught up in petty grievances over some ego attachment or a need to defend myself if someone disagrees or even attacks me.  I've found that rather than a scathing defense of myself here it's better to forgive forget and actually listen to the other person's criticisms with an open heart and mind. There is often some truth that I may not want to hear.  Opiates can really help with all that shit.

Wow man, I wish opiates did the same for me as they do you guys. They just make me not give a flying fuck about anything at all and leave me feeling absolutely and totally spiritually removed from existence. Blissed out of course, but in the spiritual aspect quite the opposite to the way they affect you both from the sounds of things!

I embrace my insanity and walk the streets knowingly lacking in empathy or shame for the people around me.
I focus on my own happiness instead.
By being aware of doing so I feel at one with myself, my 'I' and my ego.

I'm not a very spiritual person but I agree about the empathy part. It kills the physical and mental pain so well that you can actually look/feel outside of yourself.

I remember the first time taking hydrocodone and feeling like "this" is how people are supposed to feel. Its funny if you think about it, the effects are actually kind of subtle in a way but profound. They're a blessing and a curse though.

I think you meant od and not addiction. Opiate addiction is hell. Its a "suicide method" in the sense that the withdrawal will make you contemplate suicide

I see nothing wrong here at all. As long as we don't hurt others physically, imo all paths are equal. If one is happy the world benefits.

At my age and physical condition I plan on being on them for the rest of my days so I don't have that big fear/worry which is a big drag on the high.  If I ever can't get them and Kratom won't substitute then I have to leave because I couldn't deal with a worsening of my symptoms and the withdrawal symptoms also. It puts the whole question to rest. :jimmorrison:

Hope it doesn't get to that point. And if it does, hopefully you'll find a different way. But i get it, certain unfortunate realities of life.

Btw on an unrelated note i dig your posts, I find I can relate to your pov often. This forum has drawn me in a lot lately. Didn't used to. The past year I've had a lot of troubles and self revelations. Plenty of time to think about the nature of myself and people in general.. I guess philosophy has appealed to me as a result.
